Well, I broke down and bought myself a bottle of Skrewball. Vons had it for $22, so I thought "Why not?"

Aside from the fact that the very idea seems repugnant, that is.

I had a little sip neat, and I have to say that the aroma of peanut butter is overwhelming. The taste, too.
So I made myself a PB&J Old Fasioned. Skrewball, a bit of Balcones rye, some bitters, a maraschino cherry and orange peel for garnish.

It's actually pretty tasty. Would recommend.

Broke down and got a handle of Kirkland blended Scotch. Possibly the best value likker ever. It is not top shelf, but it also is not garbage. Perfectly drinkable, middle of the road, good for sippin’ n’ watching the teevee.

I am sure I’ll get a ration of shit for it, but srsly, best value ever.

I’ve drank Kirkland scotch and their tequila. Both were good to my liking :thumbup

Walked into Costco to buy laundry detergent and happily found Alexander Murray on sale. A bottling of 17year old Macduff...:wow :wtf

It tastes good. Already tried.
(The beef kielbasa I got was good too)

(Who am I kidding I went there because of this thread just to buy Kirkland Scotch...(I didn't buy it nor notice it actually))

Scored yesterday. Son’s GF gave me a bottle of that 1829 12 year old Tullamore Dew. Verra smooooth.

Interesting from Wikipedia:

“In his early letters later collected in The Proud Highway, Hunter S. Thompson makes frequent mention of Tullamore Dew.”

Well this was a certain surprise while NYE shopping at my favorite bottle shop in this backwater part of New York State. I have no idea if it's any good yet, it was only $36 for the bottle and the back label claims its been "aged at least three years" so I'm not expecting much.

But I was compelled to pick it up since it was distilled and bottled less than ten miles from where I grew up. And finding it all the way out here? Sure.

I'm sure it will make a decent Old Fashioned.

That’s a cool label. Let us know how you like it. You drink neat or on a big rock? With peanuts, cashews, smokes?

I'm pleasantly surprised! It's very sweet, smooth but with a little bit of spice as the palate develops. I had this neat and the burn got to me a little bit (it's 90 proof) but I also just finished a bowl of chicken tikka masala so I'm sure that didn't help - I'm succumbing to getting heartburn a little more often as I get older.

Whether I drink whiskey neat or with a cube is entirely decided based on the whiskey. I find some are better with a little bit of ice, but it kills the flavor of some others.

Don't smoke, and I never learned to enjoy whiskey with any legumes. May have to try that.

Thanks for the report. I may add that into my repertoire. Re: heartburn, have you tried eating smaller meals? Same amount of food just spread out throughout the day.

Def recommend salty peanuts or cashews (preferably Costco). I enjoy holding the tumbler in one hand while fiddling with peanuts/cashews/cigar in the other.

Happy New Year!

Oh my. I would think true "Alabama Style" would be closer to the mason jar posted earlier. The thing to buy in Conecuh, AL is the sausage (which is excellent), not the whisky :)

Over the last couple of years I've become a huge fan of rye (formerly a fan of Irish). Most of what you'll find is "barely legal" meaning only 51% rye in the mash bill. Generally, these tend to be sweeter on the palette. For scotch fans, you might try the Pikeseville. It's affordable and has rye, corn, and malted barley in the mash bill and a unique flavor.
My personal favorite at the moment is Whistle Pig 10. It's a 100% rye mashbill and hasn't been f*cked with (weird barrels etc like the 12yo and others) and is consistently delicious.
I managed to score a bottle of single barrel cask-strength WP10 just before Christmas. Worth every penny.

OK - so who is the BARF hookup to the buffalo trace family of "rares"? I want to start collecting and trying them..

A coworker gave me William T Stagg 2015. Pretty stoked on that! Going to save it for a few years for fun.

For me Scotch is neat, Bourbon gets a cube, seems to usually work pretty well.
