High school renaming

Good news, Lincoln, Washington and Jefferson Highs in SF are being renamed to celebrate non racists!

No Jefferson HS in SF. It's an elementary school.

Changing Lowell (poet), Balboa (Spanish explorer) and Mission High (after Mission Dolores) plus some junior and elementary school names, including Dianne Feinstein Elementary -- 44 schools altogether.

Like the school board doesn't have better things to do? Like fix its $150 million shortfall? :party

Yeah, it's an interesting thing. I certainly see the basis for the objection, but equally see that holding people to the highest standard means that we will be naming high schools after fish.

The Jeffersons reruns are now being called "The Carps". Apparently, Denzel has changed his last name to "Zebra danios".

I went to two schools that will be renamed. I resent the high school name change but not the junior high.

Agreed. mind-dbefuddling. :loco :dunno In the middle of a pandemic, while the schools are closed? :rolleyes It's a little strange! I thought they had more pressing medical stiff to figure out. (Unless .. it's just all for show!?)

Florida is ripe for school name changes. Many schools were built during the Jim Crow era and reflect anti-change attitudes so we have many Confederate/bigot names for public buildings.

Tux suggested animal/fauna inspiration. I'm good with that.

Piss-ant Middleschool. Home of the Pissers.
Leopard Frog Elementary. Home of the Tadpoles.
Heron High School. Home of the Piscavores.
Picidae Community College. Home of the Woodpeckers.

Again, Tux and the medicinal hit at the correct crossing.

The 44 schools are named for historical figures who "significantly diminished the opportunities of those amongst us to the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,"

When I think of people who significantly diminished the opportunities to liberty, Lincoln is usually the first to come to mind. I'm glad that dude is finally getting what he deserves

While we were directionally challenged in the Midwest we were ahead of our time, I attended Shawnee Mission East high school.

Lincoln saved us from the oppressive vampire nation.

They shouldn't be changing the name of schools in his honor.

What is noteworthy in cases like this is the number of white guys bitching about the situation and how people of color, indigenous people, women, and everyone else who isn't a white man just kinda shrugs and moves on with their lives. Perhaps don't think of this as a dishonoring of past presidents, and instead view it as an opportunity to recognize someone else's contributions to society for a while.

I've been to a few city council meetings in various places. It's pretty common for the council to vote on renaming of things during. As far as I've witnessed they need to consider the cost to the jurisdiction to rename the [fill-in-the-blank]. The cost has always been zero or next-to-nothing. The vote takes a few minutes. There's sometimes a little debate from folks in the audience and on the council about the negatives associated with doing so, and most think that the upside of sending a positive message to people who aren't white and male is a nice thing to do. Sure, it's a smallish gesture, but it's something.

I agree, city councils can change school names much more easily and cheaply than actually providing needed help to those in need.

If you think that recognizing there's a problem is the first step to solving it, then perhaps the school-renaming effort starts to make more sense. That's my hope anyway.

Cities don't operate schools. I wouldn't think a city council would have any say on the name of a school.
