I made mahpo tofu one time for family meal when I was in cooking school, the chef was European but he lived in Hong Kong for a long while, so I thought he would like it or know it.

After family meal, the chef came up to me and said that the dish didn’t look appetizing, but when he tried it, he said it was quite tasty and he was pleasantly surprised. Best cooking compliment I have gotten.
Yes, mahpo tofu looks like vomit.

My favorite mapo tofu in the Bay Area is at a Muslim Chinese food place in Milpitas called Darda Seafood. The only difference is that they don’t serve pork.

The onion bread there is also “Fat Boy Approved!”

NY Pie in Santa Rosa is the closest thing to the type of Pizza I remember eating as a kid in the Northeast.

“Fat Boy Approved” - that’s awesome

Does Darda make cumin lamb?

(A CNY trip to Chengdu introduced to me to Muslim Chinese street vendors from Western China. Interesting “asian” faces and delicious cumin lamb skewers.)

I love The CheeseSteak Shop. Maybe because of my love for this place, it skewed my ideal of the perfect cheesesteak. I've been to Philly and eaten at Geno's and Pat's. Both are crap compared to The CheeseSteak Shop.

You're doing it wrong...everybody knows the best cheesesteaks are in Jersey...

Sorry, I don't know if they have cumin lamb. I don't think I ever ordered any lamb there.

The #fatboyapproved was a hash tag I used for a while when I had a Facebook page. Any time I ate something super good, I would post a pic on my page with the hash tag. Some people still tell me that the reason that they are most bummed about me killing my FB page is that they can't search the #fatboyapproved hashtag anymore to decide where to eat. :teeth

I used to drive from Marlton, NJ into Philly. Never had a cheesestake in Philly that compared to Gaetano's. N-e-v-e-r.

In all honesty the CheeseStake Shop is the only place that has come close to Gaetano's around these parts and even they make em better than anything I've had in Philly.

Is it true a cheesesteak shop must use amoroso bread and sell tastycakes to be considered legit?

I'm not there for tastycakes so that's a no. Bread has to be firm enough to not flatten when grasped firmly but not so crisp that there is too much crumb. Must be white/sweet bread tho. Absolutely no sourdough.

Is it good? I always go to Kusina Ni Tess on Ellis, because I am usually Downtown.

Yes on tastycake, the bread is negotiable.

Bruh, its my favorite Filipino joint so far. Better than Fil Am BBQ down the block from where I live in DC, IMO. Think I'll try your place tomorrow. They got 3 items combos?
