LOL at her quote:

“As cars get fancier repairs need to be affordable for the general public," said Bouwmeester.

Should be something more like : As customers purchase more luxurious cars, they need to understand they must also be able to afford repairs on luxury cars.

Don't want to pay for Mercedes repairs? Buy something else. Don't want to be on the hook for repairs when returning a leased vehicle? Buy the damage waiver.

Manufacturers are moving away from building cheap cars, the market for them is dying.

It takes 5 minutes to swap out the bulbs on my 2014 Camry. 6 years old, 40K miles and the most trouble its given me was a dead battery I had to replace.

there was an article out there somewhere. why "There are no more cheap cars" any longer. They have gotten more expensive, even the cheaper base ones, (previously) . Catch: even some of the base ones quoted in that article were like 40% better "base" than what I've had previously

Technology has invaded just about everyone’s in the interest of convenience/safety/productivity/etc. Quite a bit in the past quarter century, and I’m not just talking about cars. 25 years ago, hardly anyone had a cell phone. Now we all do. What’s that cost us all? $500-1000 a year or so for the service plus however much for a new phone every x years. Internet service, streaming services, home security services, fancy “smart” thermostats, laptops, tablets...hell my wife even has a bunch of electronic fake candles all over the house.

Seriously. Take a look around your house right now and just add up how much all the modern tech has cost you.

It’s no secret. Automakers know that more and more people want tech in their cars. They seem to want it everywhere else in their lives. Some of it makes the car so much safer, the government even requires some of it now.

But just like all that other tech in our lives, tech in the car definitely costs more.

Fun fact. Back in the day if you’re vehicle needed an alignment, it was a simple $50 affair. This service is still offered today. It’s probably more like $100 or so at just about any decent shop. Maybe double that at a dealer. However...if your vehicle is loaded to the gills with tech? Cameras, radar transceivers, night vision, and so on? Now that alignment is done at the dealer only and can easily crack a thousand bucks.

Ha, same year Camry here with the same dead battery last year. Bulbs are all good though. No other issues except self-inflicted ones. 34K miles.

I’ve always wondered about the longevity of Nav systems in the dash.

Had a couple and will never buy a German make again. Cost the moon to maintain.

My import wrench told me the VW Tiguan is the worst; $3,500 to replace the liquid-cooled alternator. They have to pull the engine to replace it.

I’ve got a problem with $40K+ cars to begin with.

My base model Nissan truck(2010) has manual shift, manual windows, manual door locks, no AC, no factory radio.
It has served me well for hauling a moto and camping gear. Wish for power windows on hot days tho.
I can’t quite reach the passenger side window, for turning on the right side AC.

I am an old fucker. I still grumble when I see Power Windows in a car. I honestly can't remember the last time I had a car with manual windows, but I still grumble about, "more needless shit to break."

You too. I finally bought a car with power windows. My first one. While I love them, every time I think about them, I think: "Fuck, when that breaks it's going to cost a fortune.":laughing

I’ve done window regulators and motors on a couple cars, it wasn’t bad. About $100 doing it myself. (But this is Ford and GM stuff)

The most tech I care about in my car is bluetooth or USB connectivity so I can run my own playlists and not the radio. On an older car, that's an easy 200-300 dollar fix. Done.

Holy smokes.

The good news regarding assemlies is that I have had good luck buying used oem parts on e'bay such as interior door panels and light assemblies as many e'bay sellers do indeed care about their customer "ratings."
