I enjoy Sapporo or Asahi with sushi/Japanese food.
That's not how they drank it when I was there. They put a little ceramic water pitcher on the side and slowly water it down at least in casual settings. Mebbe its different in a different setting, like at the distillery where they want you to sample it pure., I was in a bar-restaurant, sitting with a new friend who was 30 years my elder. You start strong and end with whisky flavored water. Remember, we are talking about an impoverished culture with historically small population. They didn't have sixteen bottles of 12 year old sitting in the kitchen like Amuricans. Neat is very good for sales and getting slogged fast, however. But it sure ain't thrifty. To me, the hallmark of bein Scots is bein thrifty. It's just one gggranny, but the heritage is Dumfries, so lowland.
Just once, try it, just for me and see. Make sure the water is very good. It unlocks the flavor.
If nothing else, I can't take the esophageal burn anymore. When I was young I could.
Your experiences may vary. I know people love to argue about this but I use water with every kind of whisky in this manner. This guy below explains the different options....and covers my reasons.

You guys every tried some Natural Light Ice?
The comments about sapporo reminded me that the best beer is often situational-dependent.
The large Chang my buddy handed me at the end of a long day riding in Northern Thailand? Not my favorite style but at the time, best beer ever!

Keystone had higher alcohol content.
Only years ago at a topless club where a dude in the group I was with insisted we order pitchers of the stuff.

I’d rather go over to Pacifica and get some beer from Lunchbox’s brewery. He makes tasty beer, and he’s a barfer.
Like I said, someone give me something good to try, because I've had all sorts, even fancy foreign jobbers, and I'm still waiting for something I like.
