Who got the Younger?

That's not how they drank it when I was there. They put a little ceramic water pitcher on the side and slowly water it down at least in casual settings. Mebbe its different in a different setting, like at the distillery where they want you to sample it pure., I was in a bar-restaurant, sitting with a new friend who was 30 years my elder. You start strong and end with whisky flavored water. Remember, we are talking about an impoverished culture with historically small population. They didn't have sixteen bottles of 12 year old sitting in the kitchen like Amuricans. Neat is very good for sales and getting slogged fast, however. But it sure ain't thrifty. To me, the hallmark of bein Scots is bein thrifty. It's just one gggranny, but the heritage is Dumfries, so lowland.

Just once, try it, just for me and see. Make sure the water is very good. It unlocks the flavor.

If nothing else, I can't take the esophageal burn anymore. When I was young I could.

Your experiences may vary. I know people love to argue about this but I use water with every kind of whisky in this manner. This guy below explains the different options....and covers my reasons.

Well, it sounds like you are talking about cheap scotch, which one should take with water or ice. You're talking about a 12 year old like that isn't the bare bones entry point for a decent single malt.

:laughing

I mean, I do enjoy the hammered smoke skank of a Laphroaig 10 a fair amount, but I have no illusion of that being a good representation of the art. Now the Laphroaig 30 on the other hand... :drool

For Scotch drinking, which means starting at 12 year single malts or better, watering down a fine craft that took more than a decade to make is sinful. You would no more water that down than an old Chateau Lafite.

Tradition in fine scotch indicates that a single drop of water to "open up the flavor," is acceptable and I certainly like it as part of the ritual in consuming a tasty dram.

That tradition is not at all about the EXTREME, it is about palate and appreciation for an elevated experience with a finely crafted product.

You guys every tried some Natural Light Ice?

LOL, I have. It is terrible, but I am not too fancy to drink it. I tend to go to the two extremes with beer texture and usually either drink a watery lager like a Corona, PBR, or a Heneiken (whatever the bar sells cheap) or whatever the super richest and darkest Stout or Port they have available is.

Like I said, someone give me something good to try, because I've had all sorts, even fancy foreign jobbers, and I'm still waiting for something I like.

The comments about sapporo reminded me that the best beer is often situational-dependent.

The large Chang my buddy handed me at the end of a long day riding in Northern Thailand? Not my favorite style but at the time, best beer ever!

True, Budweiser only ever acceptable at a ball game and in the ballpark, it is just fine.

Only years ago at a topless club where a dude in the group I was with insisted we order pitchers of the stuff.

You are a man of class, I see.

Try the Screamin' Eagle at Ocean View Brew Works in Albany if they have it available. It's a fantastic lager.
