yeah. .. heard this.

Obv see, even the OP, he's exactly that type of whisky he's lusting after? A recipe for hype and prices.

I have not much information about this... But I liked a cocktail with Nikka coffae . :dunno

It's like Blue Label... it's not offensive, but rather very mild and approachable... however it's nothing special either. It wasn't terrible when it was ~$40 (still would spend my money on Scotch though), but now shops are charging $80-100 for a 12 yr Yamazaki/Hakushu, and for the money that's a complete ripoff.

wow--yeah. It's just basic math.

I can get an 18 year old botle and yes, it's a very very well-known name, from the Glen,... but it's 18 year old, and it's really good--for $84-90.

And you wan me to pay a $80 for a 12 year old Japanese whisky. OK... Whatever! ! Maybe someday.

Yeah, that price is getting up into Springbank territory, and around that mark, it is the only Scotch I drink if it is available.

I don't know when Yamazaki got so expensive. I remember when it first started coming around I tired it in like the $30-$50 range and I recall it wasn't bad down there.

It is a weird thing to get worked up over a transliteration of a Gaelic word and it's English spelling. But getting outraged and angry is the tired expectations of the perenially-wronged Scots, who seems to play the authority at times. I always prefer to leave Old World animosities in the Old World if possible so a mild foul whistle on the objection.

the 15 year old Yoichi used to be really really good and was fairly affordable, I think around $60 a bottle on a good day. It tasted like liquid bacon.

I also remember Iwai being a lot more complex and interesting. I picked up a bottle recently and tastes like they blend it with Canadian whisky. at least Iwai is still affordable ~$20

Now Japanese whiskey has gotten crazy popular and the distilleries are having trouble keeping up with demand so prices went up and quality went down. This is why we can't have nice things.

Man, I'd rather try all these new 'merican whiskies poppin up. That joint in Ashland ought to be up by now (a former brewery only). And I am rather fond of Tin Cup which is not super distinguished but solid. I thought that outfit that makes Gin around here (St George?) is gonna make some whisky too..

PS. One of my simple pleasures is affordable Bulleitt at Costco. Rye and Bourbon.

I think there is a uptick in Rye offerings come to think of it. I like rye whisky because its not quite as cloying as bourbon.

I think that was in 2013? Yamazaki Sherry cask IIRC

A lot of the new brands are actually just selling MGP whiskey. Not necessarily a bad thing but just be aware that you might be getting sold on a fancy label, a novelty tin cup or a fake story rather than the actual whiskey. If it says anywhere on the bottle that it was distilled in Indiana then chances are that you've got a MGP spirit.

Try wild turkey 101 rye or Michters rye if you like rye

If any of you have never tried Redbreast Irish whisky, I urge you to do so. It may be exceeded but its really delicious. Gotten kinda pricey tho.

Haven't had Michters. Will try. Thx!

It's very good. Pot still whiskey. It has a very Meaty taste to me. One of my favorite Irish whiskeys for sure. I'm not a huge fan of Jameson or Tullamore dew and such because they all taste very bland. The vodka of whiskies. Red Breast does a good job of letting people know that Irish whiskey doesn't have to taste like that.

I got a bottle for my birthday. I like it.

I'm finding that most whiskey is seriously overpriced.

Yeah, because us f@ckin boomers finally got money. I watched the price of most Scotch whisky double back in the 80s or so. Damn, it was so nice before. I used to go to BevMo and spend 18 or 19 bucks on 12 year old stuff. Those same bottles are double+ that now. They had rotating brands on special. Now I drink less Scotch whisky, period. Still love it though. Even Redbreast went up a few years ago but not by that much. I think its popularity.

Because my kid is a bartender, I am much more into cocktails now, trying to do clever things with smaller amounts of interesting liquids. I bought a bottle of the King's Ginger Liqueur and have been experimenting with that. We went to Portugal in March and I got into Ginja. Got a big bottle here (Souza's Liquors in Mission San Jose) and have been trying to come up with a cocktail for it. I also use a lot of Maracuja from Azores in different screwdriver sunrise type o things now that its gettin hot. That an my orange tree.

I still love whisky but it costs too damn much.

PS I use rye in Sazeracs and such.

I Should make a list of all the really good whiskies I've had in the under $40 range.

The Evan Williams Bottled in bond and single barrel are really good for the money. A few months ago I would have recommended Henry Mckenna but now that has started getting pricey.

Damn I gotta head down to little Portugal. Along with some Fava nuts and pastel de natas bringing back some Ginja would be nice. Maybe they might have some rum from Madeira to make poncha.
You could try using the Azorean passion fruit to make a maitai with your orange tree's juice, you'll need some guava from somewhere though.

While I was on vacation I had an interesting twist on the old fashioned that I was able to recreate at home.
first you gotta make vanilla cinnamon simple syrup ( a bit more than a half cup of sugar, a bit less than a half cup water, dash of vanilla extract, a couple cinnamon sticks, heat until a light simmer and maintain for like 5 min, pour into bottle and enjoy)

2oz bourbon
A bar spoon of your cinnamon vanilla syrup
2 dash aromatic bitters
1 dash orange
1/8th oz cold brew coffee
large ice
orange peel expressed and used as garnish

Nearly an old fashioned but taste is transformed. so good. tastes like your getting a hug.

So, this isn't old world shit you're talking about here, this is a contemporary throw down of Single Malt vs. Bourbon people. That is where this beef lives.

Not heard of Kings Ginger. Comparable to Domaine de Canton?

I like Canton in a Dark and Stormier with Bundaberg and Zaya or if looking for less sweet use Cock N Bull, Reeds, or Fever Tree. Zaya can be substituted with Appleton Estate, El Dorado, or Zacapa. It's the one drink I have come across where picky people and people who don't drink cocktails all enjoy it.

Not as fast as I look.
No, mate, you always drink Jameson's in Ireland and you don't wear your SF Giants gear there, because it is the wrong color.
Hmmm. Not my experience. I hope some will actually look some of this shit up. I am not the educator of barf, today. Everyone is going "who cares" about the word. Well, that is probably why you are drinking Japanese whiskey, and not single barrel Scotch whisky. A good ribbing never goes unpunished in the k.s. Too bad. But, I will try again, some day.

Whisky snobs are snobs are one thing.

Whisky spelling snobs are a whole new level.

Trader Joe's has a 12 year. I can't remember the brand but it was pretty decent for the price that wasn't far off a normal bottle of Jameson.

I really enjoy Dewars 18yo. Dunno if that makes me a philistine, hahaha.

Glenfiddich has a really good IPA cask finished whiskey that is nice and tasty.

Good ol' Johnnie Walker Double Black, Green Label, Gold Label, Blender's Batch are all enjoyed here at Casa Villa.

Craigellachie 13yo, Green Spot, Yellow Spot, Teeling, Laphroaig, Talisker Storm and Glenlivet are also welcome.

A nice surprise was Stillhouse Black Bourbon - I'm not a bourbon guy, but this was really nice. I also bought a "Lost Distillery" whiskey that is super good - titled Gerston.

Bought a bottle of Laphroaig's Cairdeas bottled in 2014. It is the "new guy" drink for my "Scotchtoberfest" random get-togethers. It is definitely an acquired taste - if you like campfires, AND battery acid, it's for you! hahaha!

But -

My all-time favorite is Glenmorangie Signet - elixer of the gods! Woof.
Truly a case of something being worth the price.
