So my 2013 passat after the last ecu update in 2014 when this was first brought up dropped a solid 3-4mpg hand calculated. And started to go through regen cycles more often while also an increased use of DEF. So it did effect the car one of the reasons we traded it in for the 15. I never thought this would happen. I wonder if this is a reason so many turbos and exhaust flapper valves went south. So much restriction that they overheated?

Damn! Is that what's gonna happen? Owners get a check for the premium we paid for diesel but then a recall software update kills gas mileage and performance??

48.1 MPG Diesel is energy equivalent to ~42 MPG Gas, which is also called MPGe, so even if VW was not cheating, the energy efficiency of diesel is not as good as people think because diesel has more energy per gallon. :nerd:nerd
Diesel also has more oil and pollution per gallon.

The concern is that the emissions system cannot support full time use.
There are expensive components of the emissions system on the 2.0 that fail around the 100k mark. If they are under increased load, the failure time may be ridiculously short.
That will screw customers pretty well.

Diesel is MUCH more efficient when you're stuck in traffic a lot, when there is no load on the engine (i.e. you are not moving) it takes far less fuel to keep the engine turning over than a gas engine.

All true, that was probably part of the equation when they decided to put in this cheat, it would have lowered the cost to build.

VW doesn't give a shit about this. NOx in the atmosphere catalytically produces ozone, and contributes to particulate matter to a huge degree. One could actually estimate their contribution to the number of deaths and incidence of respiratory disease caused by particulate matter and ozone. Just a matter of time till that study comes out...
