I have never done climbing at a indoor gym, but i climb with my brother at Castle and Indian Rock in mountains above Saratoga(near San Jose) does anyone know of any climbing gyms in San Jose that are relatively cheap? I would love to climb more, but outside is based on weather and is kind of an all day event. I have also done The Grack in Yosemite.

city beach is suppose to be cheap, fwiw, but you get what you pay for.

planet granite, if you are talking about the southbay/peninsula, is a little pricey but well worth it terms of what you get.
-Full featured gym with premium equipment.
-Bouldering, Top Rope, Lead Climbing
-3 gyms, belmont, sunnyvale and san fran
-free classes, yoga, crossfit, strength & core
-sauna
-largest selection of footwear, climbing gear (albeit a bit pricey)

Your lucky day

If you love to climb or were always wanting to try it... I work at PG in Belmont. Looking for some new climbing buddies... I can get you in for free if you can climb when I climb.

Today at 3 anyone?

Im a noob to climbing (except when I was a rugrat climbing outta my crib haha) but I want to try it.

What are some things to know so I dont get taken to the cleaners at a gym? Anyone been to bladium gym on Alameda? I went in to look last week and the stupid college kids at the counter treated me like i was a russian asking about launch codes 40 years ago. I just wanted to know about the wall there and fees. Didnt get any info but got to peak at the wall quickly though.

Ive got no gear, no experience, and at the moment still in a cast with a fractured hand. but its something I wanna do.

:thumbup I do! But I gotta get the cast off and get dexterity back in my hand before I go.

Sweet!
You need to wear cloths, kinda ;)
I suggest knee length stretchy shorts, like b-ball shorts (wear underwear too), and a t-shirt, maybe a sweatshirt on top to wear before you are warmed up. We have rental shoes and harnesses for $5 if you don't have your own gear. I'll give you the lesson, so no charge on that. Best time is early afternoon if possible. A couple of days heads up is good since I don't check the forum everyday, but if you PM me it goes to my reg email and I should be able to respond quicker.
This is a general shout out to all, to get more people interested in climbing and more importantly, so I can have more climbing buddies!

Just wondering... it's been a bunch of years since I was in a gym, at PG can you still use an ATC or are the ropes all setup with Grigri's? Can you get your Belay card on your first visit?

(Ok, just checked the PG site, it had the info on getting the belay card.)

All our top roped climbs already have gri gris on them. You can get your belay card on your first visit, if you pass the belay test :teeth

If you take a lesson at PG to learn how to belay, you have to take the test on a diff day from the lesson.

If you need a little refresher lesson, that would be cool with me too, as long as you are cool with a temp belay card on that visit (if I feel you can save my life):thumbup

SalCal,

Thanks for the offer, may take you up on that if I ever venture over to Belmont.
Have done belaying (and some leading on 5.6 - 5.9 multi pitch stuff, but it's been a while. :( ). The Grack is fun, Snake Dike is also fun, except for the long approach (hours) and the long arse march up the slab to the top and then the long walk back down to Happy Isle. Also done Royal Arches, the pendulum get's the heart rate and pucker factor going for sure! :rofl Cathedral Peak and it's chimney is also awesome, and the approach only takes a couple of hours to hike in.

Hmmm, wonder if people would be interested in doing a one (or maybe a two day) trip to Yosemite to boulder at Camp 4 or top rope stuff at Swan slabs?

Guess I need to start working on my fingers and forearms and stuff my feet back into some shoes. :laughing Hey, if yur your toenails don't turn black n blue then fall off your shoes are too lose!!! :rofl

Dang, this Friday (if Connie posts up) there's supposed a Libmo meet, but thanks for the heads up on the first Friday's.

Digging through the old T-shirt box found this other one! Eat your heart out!

And a little history, when PG first opened they had boxes of "holds" that hadn't been placed on the walls, so they gave me free passes to help bolt up new routes - cool! :party

I only skimmed the thread the 1st time, and all I saw was the gym posts. Looks like there are rock climbers here too.

Moto trip with rope & rack: Fun, or too much crap to carry? Both?
