instagram will soon have the right sell photos uploaded to it

I am surprised I didn't see anything here about it. So looks like instagram is making a push to be able to make money off all photos uploaded to it with no compensation for the person who took the photo.
This is the Cnet article about it
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-5...ays-it-now-has-the-right-to-sell-your-photos/

It looks like its not a hoax either.
Another article on CNN about it also
http://money.cnn.com/2012/12/18/technology/social/instagram-sell-photos/

There is no opt out either. The only choice you have is to close your instagram account.

No, they didn't already.

This basically says any pic uploaded to Instagram becomes their property, forever. Including pics of your kids, your house, your life.

I know, I know..."what did you expect?"

[voice of reason] Having read it, I can see what they are really attempting to do. They are a PHOTO service/business and as such, need to advertise their service. In course of said advertising, they might take things like screen shots etc of their site which COULD include a cap of your photo. In the event that happens, they need protection for silly lawsuits. Could you imagine how an ad for Photobucket would look like with no photo's? Pretty silly.

That said, while they are trying to protect one door, they are creating another for abuse. They will need to learn to screen cap a page with THEIR OWN PHOTO'S on it and ditch the language.

I was never a fan of instagram or it's services.

I really hated folks that took pictures of this mornings breakfast using the old school filter, and think it's the coolest thing in the world.

Except it specifically says they can sell your pics to someone else. Example given is a hotel in Hawaii can pay Instagram, and use any pic taken at their location. You, your hot wife, your young kids.

This ain't about them advertising their service.

FB finally wants to make a buck off it's billion dollar investment, the horrors! :laughing

This is why the internet industry, outside of Google, is such a train wreck. It's filled with self-entitled users who expect services that cost hundreds of millions of dollars to run to be free, because everything thinks that just by that sitting on a pile of their ever-so-valuable "data", the company is able to fart one hundred dollar bills.

Well it turns out your data actually isn't really worth that much, and it's only value comes when it is shared or used to sell shit to you or others in highly commercial ways. But even when a company tries to make pennies by doing this suddenly everyone is all up in arms about how evil and deceitful that company is.

[voice of reality] you think that sales of photos for pure profiteering is an "accidental'" consequence of these new rulings, after having experiencing decades of how businesses treat any information under their control?[/voice of reality]

I don't need to be hit on the head with a baseball bat by every single internet content "sharing" service" to either avoid or wear a helmet around each "new" content grabber that emerges :laughing

self entitled users? really? What do you call it when a company offers picture hosting services for free, and then later changes their terms of service to give them property rights to your pictures?
and I am absolutely laughing at the ignorance that causes you to think a hosting service costs someone hundreds of millions of dollars. :rolleyes

also, they can make money in ways that don't include shafting everyone that made their service worth a shit in the first place.

your post is full with technical truths, but the reality is, that users would not have gone to Instagram AND made it a success if the service declared from its first screen or ad:

"Come upload your pictures to us, we'll SELL them for sure with no money to you!!!"

You don't think people would simply NOT use it? Or at least avoid a CNET article about it later..

p.s I don't have an account so I can't really go get upset

still no guarantees, if it's not on your box, you really don't have control.

if it's important, valuable or dangerous, stash it on your own drive. Pennies per gig, and no "hacking" or "going out of business" or "change of terms of service" to deal with.

Sure you've gotta be responsible for your own backups, but responsibility isn't something to be afraid of :thumbup

This is why I pay for my image hosting. I am the customer. :)
