Budman is too humble to say, but I am most certainly not in this regard. Budman, silversvs, and their involvement with the OTS is the catalyst for this, and I for one am proud of what BARF has been able to do so far for the motorcycle community. Big hand for Budman and silversvs :applause

awesome!

I hate to be the party pooper here but those damn signs added an extra 20 minutes to my (normally) 35 minute commute. The electronic sign was just north of Almaden Expressway on Northbound 85. To there from the Blossom Hill on-ramp took 20 minutes. No accidents, no stalls, just everybody slowing down to read the damn sign, and traffic sped up to 65 as soon as we passed the sign.

It's not the message that's the problem, it's the signs. Whether they put up actual traffic alerts (i.e. SB 17 closed at...), or Amber alerts, or "Click It Or Ticket", or "Report Drunk Drivers, Call 911" every time those signs are on during peak hours, traffic inevitably slows down or comes to a stop for no apparent reason other than that damn sign being on. I've witnessed this personally on too many occasions.

So, while I applaud the message, and the initiative to put it on the electronic signboards, I can't help but think there are better ways to spread that message without inconveniencing/pissing off the very people we are trying to reach. Imagine what the average cager is thinking, he's sitting there in an artificially-induced traffic jam, only to find out that he's being held up by a sign advising care for motorcyclists, while those very motorcyclists are zooming by in the carpool lane/lanesplitting past them. I know I was getting pissed off sitting there in my cage.

Not to mention that it creates more danger to motorcyclists to have 2 lanes nearly stopped while the carpool lane is going 65. Or have to lanesplit because of those very signs.

Oh yea, the hieroglyphics on the NB85 sign didn't help much either...

Don't even get me started on Arnie's proposal to install new (more-graphically-sophisticated) electronic signboards on the freeways and sell adspace to help out with the budget deficit...

Odd, I've never noticed this. They normally display driving times, but sometimes amber alerts, sometimes other messages.

I'll have to start paying more attention to how heavy traffic is when they display a non-driving-times message, but I'd think I would have noticed if it was that bad...

Baddass. +10000000 Dennis and John. Always warms my heart to see motorcycle awareness signs. Saw a work truck yesterday with the Cyclegear "Watch Out" sticker. Makes me smile everytime. *high fives* all around :love

Ohh, forgot about those, and now that you mention it, I never notice heavier-than-usual traffic when those signs are displaying the normal "x minutes to x" messages.

Maybe because people are used to those signs and just glance at it, as opposed to having to "read" and pay attention to unfamiliar signage.

Deep breaths. It will all be OK. :laughing

I've never see this happen at any signs I've passed so I'm guessing it's happening where you stated because the sign appears broken. Drivers are probably worried they're missing important information and slowing down to try to make sense of all those broken-up letters.

I think the problem lies in the broken sign as opposed to the signs themselves.

Saw the message on the Bay Bridge this morning, and gave a salute as I passed under. It was as if the cage-centric world had suddenly, at least for one day, woken and recognized me, and my presence on the road. Whoever helped make this happen... :thumbup

Absolutely. People are trying to fill in the blanks and slowing down out of instinct.

remember, the state gubbymint is thinking of selling advertising space on these. that plan needs to be opposed.

It will be a cold day in hell before FHWA buys off on and would allow such a proposal, so sleep easier at night. Seriously, it will never happen. It's just some dumbass politician idea that will ultimately go no where (but not before they waste tons of money investigating it, I'm sure).
