I hate to be the party pooper here but those damn signs added an extra 20 minutes to my (normally) 35 minute commute. The electronic sign was just north of Almaden Expressway on Northbound 85. To there from the Blossom Hill on-ramp took 20 minutes. No accidents, no stalls, just everybody slowing down to read the damn sign, and traffic sped up to 65 as soon as we passed the sign.
It's not the message that's the problem, it's the signs. Whether they put up actual traffic alerts (i.e. SB 17 closed at...), or Amber alerts, or "Click It Or Ticket", or "Report Drunk Drivers, Call 911" every time those signs are on during peak hours, traffic inevitably slows down or comes to a stop for no apparent reason other than that damn sign being on. I've witnessed this personally on too many occasions.
So, while I applaud the message, and the initiative to put it on the electronic signboards, I can't help but think there are better ways to spread that message without inconveniencing/pissing off the very people we are trying to reach. Imagine what the average cager is thinking, he's sitting there in an artificially-induced traffic jam, only to find out that he's being held up by a sign advising care for motorcyclists, while those very motorcyclists are zooming by in the carpool lane/lanesplitting past them. I know I was getting pissed off sitting there in my cage.
Not to mention that it creates more danger to motorcyclists to have 2 lanes nearly stopped while the carpool lane is going 65. Or have to lanesplit because of those very signs.
Oh yea, the hieroglyphics on the NB85 sign didn't help much either...
Don't even get me started on Arnie's proposal to install new (more-graphically-sophisticated) electronic signboards on the freeways and sell adspace to help out with the budget deficit...
