I saw these signs again last Sunday and again today on my way into work, and each time it makes me soooo happy! :teeth

Too bad there was a moto accident on the same freeway shortly after I saw it, doh! :(

Don't be that guy.
Hmmm, so I read a few posts on here how they noticed the increase in traffic delay because of the signs. Originally, I didn't really notice any difference, but today totally changed my mind.

I was heading on 101N towards Mountain View around 10AM and traffic was BACKED up. It was literally bumper to bumper at certain sections. I was thinking there must have been a bad accident or CHP is clearing something on the road.

Traffic was terrible from the 280/680 on ramp right after Tully road all the way until around Great America Pkwy. No accidents or anything. Traffic cleared immediately after one of the signs next to great america. I don't remember exactly where, but it was around that exit give or take a mile or so.

This particular sign was right at the crest of a small dip on 101 that took you under an overpass/train track (don't remember) and kind of arched upwards and the sign is right there in perfect view. I'm thinking that because this sign was literally right in your face compared to the other sign locations, people slowed down to read. Immediately after this sign, traffic was gone.

Adverse Selection
How long have the Amber alert signs been in place? Four years maybe? And now you think they're responsible for traffic back ups all over the Bay Area? Couldn't be any other reason. Must be those damn signs. Especially now with that murdersickle message on 'em! :damn

Let's just say I'm skeptical.

Interesting enough yesterday was the first time I noticed more than 1 sign on my daily ride, I think I noticed 2 or 3

but I didn't notice any slowdown, any car brake light or anything!

I even pointed to one of the signs I think.. barely a twitch from any cars.

The message boards are getting some attention from Mr. Roadshow:
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, an annual campaign funded through grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the Highway Patrol. Motorcycle fatalities decreased 29.6 percent from 560 in 2008 to 394 in 2009 (data on 2010 will be out later). The 2009 decline was the first since 1998, marking the end to an 11-year, 175 percent increase.

Aren't those decreases just about proportional to the drop in new motorcycle sales over these last few years?

I'm too lazy to get to the bottom of it, but I have a strong suspicion any reductions in accidents and fatalities are due to fewer new riders on the road, and not due to more courteous and vigilant drivers.

Motorcycle fatalities fell 29% from 2008 to 2009. Motorcycle sales fell quite a bit in 2009 but I can't find the number its on my desk here somewhere. We also had a very wet year in California in 2009 which could have played a role in reducing fatalities. If you look below at how many bikes were registered in CA and how many licensed riders we had comparing across the years those numbers didn't drop significantly from 2008-2009.

There is no way we can attribute gains or losses in motorcycle fatalities to any one factor. There are too many variables. The important thing (or maybe sad thing) to note is that the number of motorcyclists killing themselves in California continued to increase over a decades time, when during that same period overall traffic fatalities fell significantly. This has drawn the attention of a lot of folks across a wide span of the government both at the national and state level. There has been a call to arms and a wide variety of agencies, groups, and departments have been working to find ways to reduce motorcycle fatalities.

can't keep me down
I saw those signs earlier this week. I drive for a living so I always keep an eye out for my fellow motorcyclist. Unfortunately, while listening to the radio a couple of days ago, I hear TWO accidents involving motorcycles. VFRweasel even had an incident today!

I'm sure riders, who occasionally cage it, see that sign become even more aware of their surroundings. But it looks like the daily drivers (cagers) just take a quick glance at the sign and forget what it says a mile or two down the road.

Be careful out there :ride
