Battle to save Santa Rosa

It's just awful here. Many friends lost their homes. One client were we just finished working lost their home. Many more threatened.

THE NEXT HUGH FIRE WAVE WILL BEGIN SOON.......

I can only hope you're wrong.

I have a friend in Napa who lost everything. Another friend in Santa Rosa is just south of the evacuation zone. I hope things don't flare up.

Geez....what a disaster......

We have trucks horse and livestock trailers ready to go but other than Marin Humane Society we haven't been invited to leave names, numbers, or anything.

Very very frustrating.

A friend has his dozier ready on the trailer, but was turned away, he could create an amazing break with that thing.

This is how you volunteer:

Pls verify the URL.

Just contacting individual locations and local organizations overloads them, everyone is doing the same thing and it takes away from their limited resources to deal with individual offers.

The Red Cross is one of the preferred coordinators for Sonoma County and recommended by the SO there.

That info directly from them.

You sign up and tell them what you can do, skills etc and they match you with needs. That way the most efficient use of resources is accomplished.

We all want to do right now but that might not meet immediate needs. This will be an on-going long term effort so letting major organizations with well eatablished networks of communication and expertise in coordinating volunteers is the best way.

Give them a try. They might not need what you have right now but once they know they can contact you then when they need you they will call.

Your friend got turned away because no agency can simply allow non-coordinated resources loose on private property to cut fire breaks, your friend has no agency communications equipment and could become part of the problem instead of a solution.

If the SO is referring volunteers to the Red Cross, rest assured that is where they need you.

I deleted my comment in the other thread because it wasn’t the right area but very much respect your posts on the matter. Many want to help but there is a time a place. All your comments were very well said and right on.

The Curmudgeon
Saw countless Fire and PD from cities and counties all over the bay area headed up north this evening. SFPD, Oakland, Union City, ALCO, just to name a few I saw on the bridge around 8pm.

While it's frustrating that we civilians are being turned away from helping, there are guidelines and emergency plans that the state and county has to follow in situations like this. Letting random guys in with bulldozers is probably not the best idea right now...

Horrible what is happening with the fires. All the way down in the San Jose the smoke has reached. Its a horrible feeling after your house just burned down had to experience it once and don't want to again. =(

That link gets thrown around on twitter a lot, but it seems useless. Look at the list under "opportunities" - first of all you have to select your "interest" - anything from "blood services" to "international services" to "leadership." Then when you find "disaster services" (my best guess) you're provided with a huge fucking list of code-word preceded things like "action team trainee" etc.

I get that they don't want a bunch of inexperienced people milling around Napa, but fuck's sake, I'm a strapping (ok, chubby) young lad with good lungs, where's the "give me a shovel and put me on firebreak duty" link? Or the "I have four air mattresses and a big living room and a car, put people in my house" link?

I agree. There has to be a better way to volunteer rather than going through the RED CROSS site. Is there a local (or a few) non profit(s) that are doing significant work around mobilizing volunteers?

ALSO - I work for a the resident physicians union and some of our members want to volunteer their medical services. How would I connect them?

Be Here Now
Local news saying to have them coordinate with their hospital or company to relieve those who are already here without clogging the area.

Other providers are needed at evac centers outside the area for walk in and special needs evacuees.
