KTM isn't going to provide the level of support needed in Gp. They've pretty much said they are going to build the bike then sell it to teams to run. That's practically the same support the proddy Hondas are getting now. They provide hardware support where as we see w the factory supported Open teams that they need software support. I don't think this will change much w the spec software, esp since the KTM will be new and there's no way the factory is going to test at every track. Even Suzuki is floundering at tracks where they have no data.

odd numbers. rumor is that Pastor is only still in F1 because he brings $$ to the team. but what does that even mean? is the team paying him 4m but his sponsors are paying the team more? are his sponsors paying him the 4m and the team is paying him nothing?

the same questions could be asked in GP really. salaries from the team, if they exist, are generally not the only source of income for a pro rider. if a team isnt paying their rider, but they are still pulling in 100k from a few sponsors, is that really a bad thing?

I am just shocked that Alonso and Vettel are so much higher than Hamilton. Then it really just falls off.

GP is certainly the same progression, not exact on my figures but here are my guesstimates:

Rossi - $12M
MM - $10M
Lorenzo - $11M
Dani - $8M
Dovi - $5M
Ianonne - $3M
Mav - $3M
EsA - $4M
Redding - $1M
Hayden - $300k
Laverty - $200k
Hertl - $500k
Baz - $500k
Karel - $200k
Yonny - $200k

Probably could find the data if you looked hard enough.

Unbelievable. Honestly, with the current state of F1 I don't really understand why anyone is willing to pay the top drivers that much. A designer or aerodynamicist I could understand, but not the driver. The driver's become a fucking afterthought compared to the machinery. What difference does it make if you've got Jenson Button or Kasey Kahne, you've still got a McLaren.

thats Hamiltons salary for this year, which was from his first contract w/ Mercedes. next years new contract is something like 45M IIRC

Vettel vs Kimi this year, Ricciardo vs Vettel last year, Alonso vs Massa for a while, and a whole host of other teammate battles really discredits your opinion on this. if the driver didnt matter, why are some prev champions getting beat handily by others in the same car... the driver still matters a lot.

Driver matters for sure. Just like in GP rider matters. Talent rises to the top always.

We used to joke about putting Mat Mladin on the bike at the back of the field on a satellite bike or privateer entry that was well sorted and he would have gotten to the front or damn near it even if he started from the back. Sure, some of the machinery counts. 180 HP vs 200 HP will make a difference, but not all of it. Remember when Spies qualified for SBK with a 750 in 1st? Lots of factors of course, but rider/driver matters or they wouldn't be paid like that.

Plus, they are circus animals. The most recognizable and successful ones simply get rewarded as such. And yeah, a lot of it is politics.

I don't follow F1 at all, so I don't really have any kind of reference for what you mean there other than Ricciardo vs Vettel I think, where last year Ricciardo kind of came out of nowhere and beat Vettel at many (most?) places, right? But they were on the same team, so yeah, if you're on equal equipment driver can obviously make a difference. I'm talking about between teams, not within them. Vettel couldn't do dick last year, because the Red Bull was a turd. Why pay for Vettel then? Why pay for Lewis Hamilton? Just get some decent Formula 3000 guy to drive it. If your designers built a great car, and you have a good motor, he'll kick Vettel's ass.

ya, thats what i meant about Vettel vs Ricciardo.

im not sure what u are trying to say. when Vettel or Lewis are in one of the top tier teams, its pretty unlikey that a "decent F3000" driver will ever beat them in the 'ship on a lower team. the machinery and team expertise just aint there to get the driver up front. last year, Vettel did get beat by Bottas. but hes better than an F3000 rookie and was def on the 4th best team in F1. so the chances of some rookie coming in to F1 on a diff team than Vettel and beating him are almost non-existent. the chances of a rooking coming in on the same team and beating him are just as slim.

aside from that, F1 pays out for the constructors championship, not the drivers. so teams gotta have 2 great drivers. thats y teams pay to keep around the best even if they underperform. they are still going to do better than a rookie.

but hey, Redbull did replace Vettel w/ an almost rookie. hes right behind Ricciardo, so who knows if hes doing better than Vettel. im sure the team is stoked on him though.

we see this a lot in GP as well. everyone says "put a young guy on the good bike". sometimes it happens w/ Sat bikes and what do they do... nada. the guys at the top are just too good to get beat by a rookie on slightly inferior equipment. there are no wildcards anymore like tires. only rain can mix things up well and it still doesnt happen often. this convo is coming up a lot w/ everyone thinking Dani is done and should retire. HRC isnt going to boot him because no one will be able to out-score him. Dani will retire when he wants to and HRC will likely be worse off the following year.

its weird that F1 drivers get paid more than motogp riders, yet moto riders assume more risk. i guess that just speaks to the popularity and big money involved in formula 1.

Risk has nothing to do with how much anyone gets paid otherwise roofers would be billionaires
