Well I have a NOS generator in the shop and a NOS armature arriving Monday so I’ll be holding off on the vape system for now.

I noticed this morning that my crank has more end play than it should have. So it looks like I have some work ahead of me to get this thing ready for the melee. Luckily I don’t have to split the cases to solve this because it uses spacers on the outside of the case stuffed behind a circlip. I’ll start tearing it down tomorrow and I have a pile of spacers ready. :thumbup

BOOM! The crank issue is solved. It went much easier than I thought it would! I had .0085” of end play. Acceptable is .0005-.0025”. I had a .0075” shim so it’s done! Had to buy a gear puller set but otherwise it came apart easily and went back together in a few hours! Now it’s beer thirty. Anytwowilldo and Rebekahlynn showed up right at the end! Good timing!

So after lunch I couldn't help myself and slapped the side covers back on the engine without the sparky bits, put some fresh oil in it and fired it up! It is happy as a clam, so decided to ride it to the new local brewery, Old Caz, here in Rohnert Park. I love riding this little bike!

Got the charging system sorted! New armature and generator and I’ve got 6.8v across the battery with the throttle open. I’m calling that good enough! I’m off to Moto Italia for some new rear wheel bearings as spares and calling this thing ready for the Moto Melee! Woot!

“Congrats!” on (what appears to be) success -
your commitment to solving a basic issue
that would scuttle yer Melee has borne fruit

are further test rides in order before the weekend?

How's it coming along? Are you ready for the Mele?

That's such a cool bike.

Just got back from a 50 mile shakedown. It shook my tail light off! :laughing Other than that it went fine. Had 6.3v when I got home. The tail light was a cheap o thing I got from moto Italia not original to the bike so no biggie. Hopefully he has another one. Next up loctite the heck out of the rest of the bike. I think it’s pretty much ready otherwise. Probably will re-torque spokes too!

Cool stuff Daniel! Looking forward to pics and stories from Moto Melee

+1! :ride

Kalle has some crazy plan to be there two-up on his ‘48 Chief ...

Will you be coming into the city on Friday night? They used to
hand out the route maps and stickers at the SFMC on Friday ... :gsxrgrl

I do plan to be there Friday night. Still trying to get things sorted regarding spares/charging backup plan, etc. :thumbup

Cool ... I get off work at 8pm on Friday, and can walk over and say hello, if you think you’ll still be there around 8:15pm ... :ride

:thumbup

I’ll see if I can get Kalle to stay ‘til then, too ... my experience from years gone by is a lot of guys were still thrashing to get their bikes sorted Friday night ... :laughing

get a chance to have you update me on BARF Baja 2020 ... :toothless

I probably wont get there till 8pm myself. Hopefully I'll have mine sorted by then. New tail light is in the mail, still need to loctite everything, figure out where to attach a small fuel bottle that I dont think I need (but I dont want to be "that guy"), and final decision about front fender or fork brace. Leaning towards fork brace. :laughing

I need a hammer, a drill, some binding and epoxy putty and some spray paint and you'll have both a fender and a fork brace

The fit and finish might not match the rest of the bike but at least it wont fall off right away

I wish the melee was open to 70s bikes it sounds like fun

:laughing I went with just the fork brace. The orange fender needs to sit outside in the sun for a couple months before it will really match the rest of the orange I think. :party
