So stopped by Motoitalia again today. I picked up some new wheel bearings, and bought a new reproduction front fender. I'll be removing the fork brace and putting this fender on once I get it back from the local powder coater. They are backed up 3-4 weeks they said which is kind of a bummer but oh well.

Hoping rims show up today or tomorrow.

So the powder coater called me today and said my fender is ready! So much for 3-4 weeks! I was in Santa Clara at Spray Technologies getting my hubs vapor blasted so I didn't make it back to Rohnert Park to get my fender but I'll pick it up in the morning.

So this was my first experience with vapor blasting and I must say I'm really impressed. These things look brand new, except for fifty years worth of dings. Fidel, the owner of Spray Technologies was super cool, gave me a great price and when I offered to pay extra if he could do them right then, he skipped lunch and got them done while I waited. Super stoked to not have to drive all the way there to pick them up, super pleased with how they came out, and now just need the rims and spokes to show up and this bike will be ready to ride. Woot!

Just got back from the powder coater with my fender! Woot! Still waiting on the rims and spokes to get here. I'm also needing to decide on a rear view mirror and I think I'm going to add a bicycle bell since it doesn't have a horn. Here is the fender!

This way I can still sit on it and make motorcycle noises. Rock solid. :ride

Just talked to the wheel guy. Rims are out getting drilled so probably next week sometime until they get here. Patience..... :cry

Bike rolls again! New excel rims, stainless steel spokes. Had the hubs and brake backing plates polished too. Its looking pretty good. Still have a few small things to button up and its getting a new chain too. Family trip is conflicting with motomelee unfortunately, but there's always next year and by then I'll have these bassakwards foot levers down. Pics tomorrow. I laced the rims myself, which was a fun experience.

So bad news! Took bike out on shakedown run and it lost compression about a mile west of Valley Ford! Bummer! I’m on the side of the road right now waiting for my buddy to come get me. Didn’t make any horrendous noises just lost power and died. Engine will have to come out and go on the bench to figure out the problem. Hoping it’s something easy. :thumbdown

Well I burned a hole in the top of the piston. Pulled the top end off. Head looks ok and so does the cylinder but looks like I’ve got some work ahead.

Yesterday i rode it and it was super lean once above mid range. I found one of the two intake manifold bolts had stripped threads in its hole so the manifold was loose. I used a helicoil to fix that and went through the carb to make sure it was good. I think I did the damage yesterday and then my full throttle run today sealed the deal. Super bummed but the bike was fun to ride. The thread continues!

... impressed how quickly you got the head off ... I usually have to sulk a couple of weeks ... :rolleyes:Party

:laughing Well I wanted to know what happened. I was hoping a valve adjuster tightend up and wouldn't let a valve close or something wishful like that. When I pulled the spark plug I knew something else bad had happened and I could see the hole in the piston through the plug hole. :wtf

So the head came off in 20 mins, and its all boxed up for a trip to motoitalia to get some direction on the top end, and I guess I'll pull the motor and prepare for a complete tear down to remove any little piston bits from the transmission and to inspect the bottom end. I can see rust on the crank so thats not good. I wonder if I can find a 350 motor to just drop in.

So dropped the head at EDCO in Petaluma today and Motoitalia thinks they have a NOS cylinder and piston hiding away somewhere. Tough to make the call but I feel like I should be looking for a complete engine too. Decisions decisions....

... did you see my KLR parts at EDCo ...? :laughing

... predict you'll buy the EDCo parts _and_ a complete
engine ... that's what I'd probably do, on the theory
if I have the parts I won't need them ... :party

... finding a 350 sounds like fun ... :thumbup

... vintage bikes are money pits ...
any pics of the piston ...?
:toothless

Ok so just talked with MotoItalia and I'll be buying a used 250cc engine from them and putting my refreshed head on it. He has several of them so just a matter of picking the right one. :thumbup
