Who is working from home or not working due to the pandemic?

get it while it's easy
it’s weird how enlightening challenging events can be. my company very aggressively markets itself as being socially responsible (for lack of a better way to say it - i can’t use the actual marketing language - as it would be too revealing). and i bought into that shit. but now the best they can come up with is meaningless minor advice to staff that does nothing but demonstrate that all that really matters to them is the bottom line. and they are so ignorant and backward that they have no clue what level of business can be (and on a routine basis already IS) conducted remotely.

that said, my SO’s company (another MAJOR player) has had and continues to have them on ‘work from home’ status. he’s giving me no end of grief about it.

i informed my boss on thursday that i’m out, and he’ll see me when he sees me.

Same for me. We may have some of my crew stay home on a rotating schedule, but it’s not because of the virus. Between the virus situation and tax season, we’ve had a drastic reduction in customers at my shop the past few weeks. This Monday coming up, I have a whopping 3 appointments. We typically have 20-30.

My brother works at a dealer on stevens creek and he said normally on a friday they will do 20-30+ cars, but last friday they sold 1. Tough times ahead

I’m going to go get the oil changed in the Volt tomorrow afternoon since it will probably be empty.

Fucking fantastic. My fiance was pretty blasé about her office closing (before we knew it would be mandatory), she thinks if they pass the sick time bill we're going to immediately get a check. I really don't wanna go on Unemployment insurance but it looks like I'm gonna have to now, who knows how long it'll take to kick in with like half the damn state applying.

Plus when we do go back, it's gonna be slow or non-existent at work for another two-three months, so I'm probably going to have severely cut hours until things cool off. We had a couple gigs lined up that would have paid the bills so we could have avoided cutting hours, but now that probably not gonna happen. Ughhhhhhh fuck.

Even after today’s announcement, we’re still friggin open. Parts and service at least. At least there’ll be no traffic on my commute. Even if it’s for me to just sit around and play cards with a skeleton crew at the shop.

I think the parts and service dept could be considered part of essential services by the county. Cars still need to run to get groceries, go to the hospital etc.

It is. Auto repair facilities are being considered every bit as essential as a grocery store for now. Just, who would think to bring their car in to a shop for routine maintenance or to complain that they can’t pair their phone right now? Not many cars come in on the back of a tow truck at my shop.

We’re playing it by ear. If it’s just flat out dead by the end of the week, we’ll close the entire dealership until the 7th.

So far we've gotten desks from Ikea (older son still has class online for middle school), an office chair for myself, and Bose 700 headphones. The headphones....best thing evar. I can do all of my conference calls in my loft area while the mrs and kids are blasting a movie away downstairs, crunching on chips, etc.

I presume only your service and parts departments are open?

Believe it or not, sales is going to be open. For the next day or two at least. Just one employee up there just to handle phone/email leads. I don’t think any one of us is expecting an actual “up” to happen.

I am not running a full crew in parts and service. Anyone that doesn’t feel comfortable coming in or needs to be at home to take care of kids/elderly/whatever was encouraged to just stay home. But most of them still want to come in, since they can’t afford to ride out the three weeks, and they know collecting unemployment after sick/vacation time is exhausted will be a total pain in the ass and not happen quickly since there will be such demand for it right now.

I can actually afford to take all the time off. Not how I wanted to burn the 185 hours of vacation I have banked though. But unless we outright shut the doors, I am one of the few essential personnel that has to come in no matter what.

Here’s what fucking completely sucks. If you go to Kaiser or wherever that is to get a “drive thru” Coronavirus test? They wear damn near a full biohazard suit just to approach the car and stick a swab through the window. My crew is sitting in all these people’s cars. And some of these cars are driven by some real slobs. Food(?) stains everywhere and just trash everywhere inside. We can wipe down some things like the door handles and so on but we can’t wipe every surface in the car with that stuff. It dries out the leathers or some shit. So many of the cars that come in is a Petri dish that now can potentially infect one of us. And if one of us gets infected, then we for sure are closing the dealership.

Caltrans so far is open for business. I work in project delivery so im non essential as opposed to maintenance which will remain working. But the state has yet to make a sweeping order for non essential staff. Caltrans has not embraced WFH even though it would be quite possible for certain project delivery divisions. Supposedly we will know tomorrow what the order will be.

All our city office lobbies were ordered closed today. We had range training set for this week that was canceled. The city canceled all non-essential travel and all inhouse training except by webex or some shit. I'm working in a training/recruiting assignment, but due to short staffing, I'm on patrol full time. I put in the word and still waiting to see what upcoming trainings they want me to cancel, and if I should cancel a round of oral board interviews set for next week. I think I know the answer, just waiting for the direction.

We're in the process of hiring a couple people currently in a police academy. They both informed me today that their academy was shut down until further notice. With all the lock down stay at home orders, things are changing rapidly. I really think it's for the best. Made we can flatten the curve and avoid being the next Italy / Europe.

As for patrol, I'm trying to...I wouldn't say do the minimum, but certain avoid any unnecessary exposure out there. Social distancing definitely. Won't go into the homes of others unless absolutely necessary. More frequent gloving up (every call) and wiping things down. I have gloves and wipes. I have a couple N95 masks. But I don't feel adequately prepared for this. I wish I could work from home.

I work for a large electrical contractor in Santa Clara County. Most of our work is new construction for tech companies and our projects were shut down today. If lucky we will return to work in early April. 18 years with this company and just filed for unemployment..

After shelter in place came out my office went from "Highly encourage work from home need exception to be in office" to "GTFO and work from home". heh

Grabbed my monitors, keyboard and mouse and boogied off.

I’ve got all the overtime I could want in the ER. I’m really tempted to just work straight through this thing and pad the savings account. The hard part is leaving my wife and kid but it’s a double edged sword. I want to be here for them in this tumultuous time, but there’s a sense of duty to keep working and I also don’t want to bring the sickness home with me. I have a crash pad for when I work which has been by quarantine backup to keep them safe but it’s hard to stay away from home.

Today is our son’s 15th birthday and we’re pretty bummed. School is cancelled, he can’t hang with friends, we couldn’t take him to the dinner he wanted. He’s just going to be stuck home while I sleep off my last 4 days at work and get ready to go back for more tomorrow.

We support and service essential infrastructure. I'm at work until the grid is dead and gone...but everyone else at the company is wfh status.

Speakers are currently at 11, baby.

I've worked for a big hotel in SF for the last 27 years. Luckily I got off the front desk and went back to being a hotel operator and control clerk in a nice quiet office a few years ago. I always volunteer to take unpaid time off when schedules are going to get cut, even though I am at the top of the seniority pile. I can afford it, while most on the bottom that would get cut have kids and house payents and whatnot. Anyway, I've been off since March 6. I agreed to take a 2nd week off as well. Boss texted me yesterday and asked when would be a good time to talk. Uh-oh... Seems we are back to the same schedule we ran right after 9/11 happened. 1 front desk agent and a manager during the day, and the same at night. Usually there are 8 agents, 2 operators, 1 control clerk and 1 night auditor per day. We're running at about 20% occupancy, with most of the guests being our contracted airline crews on their layovers. I can go back to work but it would be on the desk, not in my office. I'd still have the same responsibilities, I'd just have to do everything at the desk with flight attendants in my face all day. No thank you. I have an 85-year-old father-in-law that I care for a great deal, and my sister is waiting for a lung infection to clear up before I can give her my kidney. No way can I take the chance of bringing something nasty home with me. Thus, I am off for at least the next 3 weeks. I'm ok with it. I just wish my husband was off, too. He is a layout guy for a construction firm that has jobs going all over the Bay Area. Apparently they will keep working.
