When your newest vehicle is 9 years old - and it’s a motorcycle

The firm found that the average age of cars and trucks in operation in the U.S. has risen to 11.9 years this year, or about one month older than in 2019.

No such statistic that I can find for Motorcycles though.

Maybe someone else is better with the Google than I.

Other than changing filters I currently don’t have a good setup for wrenching on my own machines. I do like how quiet modern cars are. Tested mine recently and it was less than 70 decibels at 70 mph. Don’t miss the wind noise from old hatchbacks I’ve owned.

08 Escalade with 120,000. Trouble free so far. Paid off.

2012 Silverado half ton, 45k, no issues and paid off.

2006 KTM 950 SM. 30,000ish miles. Paid off but the insurance and registration goes up each year. Value goes down. Since I bought it in 2008 or so (or 2010? Fuck, I can't remember), one exhaust valve has opened up .001 in that entire time. And I checked and rechecked it. .001 thou.

Just bought a hobby car this past year, 2004 Cadillac CTS-V. 70,000 miles. Not paid off. Because I wanted it.

Sometimes it feels as if I'm walking off a pier.....

While on the topic I thought you were the owner of a KTM950 Enduro R. Which has been a dream bike for me since I first saw one however I’m not near badass enough to be able to ride one as it was designed to be ridden

This is not the thread for me. I haven’t had to have a smog check done (on something I wasn’t selling) in probably 10 years.

1990 Toyota Pickup w/ 22RE - 182k miles
2004 Honda Metropolitan - 5k miles

2006 Yamaha R4.5 race bike - ??? Miles

Because you only have new cars? Or you only have really really old ones??

I’ve had Acuras from 2013, 2015, 2018, and currently have a 2021 if that gives you an indication of which camp I’m in. And that 2021 will probably be gone in about a year and a half for a 2022 Bronco.

If I wasn't in the biz there's no chance I'd own one, let alone 2! Those Mercedes are reliable af tho.

So I can come to you if I get the E46 wagon I've kept wanting but not bought because 20 year old German?

I love the E46Fanatics build threads.

"Just got this 325i with only 120K on it, it's in pristine shape!"

{orders $5K worth of 'maintenance' items}

Honestly though an E46 Touring with a ZHP swap would be siiiiick

I daily drive a late 80s Volvo wagon and have another early 80s Volvo as the race-car project of sorts. So... My DR350 is currently the newest vehicle I own. The wagon has been almost entirely refreshed at this point (suspension, engine/turbo, AC) and drives great, so I anticipate putting it to work it for a couple more years at least.

Buying a house this spring and would much rather focus on that....

... and a few more motorcycles.

Let me introduce you to my friend who did an LT1 swap into a Volvo 242 :laughing

I considered it, but decided that if I wanted to build it out, I’d keep it OEM(ish). Volvo’s 2/7/9 cars all used variants of the “red block” engine. 8V I4 and absurdly understressed. Gutless, though some of the turbo cars were decent. Still, they were behind what Saab and others were doing at the time with respect to head design, boost control and so on.

Volvo made a 16V variation that only saw use in NA cars in the USA, but flows approximately twice the volume that the 8V does. Funny enough, you can swap that head onto the 8V block with some minor work. Folks in Sweden push it to over a thousand HP.

The 16V with a modest turbo and less than 1 bar can get you close to 300whp with daily driver reliability. That’s the game plan for mine - I’ve seen too many people push boost and break things. That’s plenty of power to have fun and appreciate the old Swedish iron.

I’ve got an entire spare engine in pieces right now. Freshly sleeved block with new pistons, good condition 16V head etc etc. Just need a bigger garage. House hunting this spring should be fun.
