Regarding the heating duct filters.

For whatever reason, we change our quarterly. In fact, I just did it as part of the "New Year" celebration.

Not only do we have FOUR of these things in our house, we have FOUR different sizes. >.<

Getting filters is up there with finding printer ink.

So I bought the place in Dec 2012 but didn't have any experience with home repair or improvement. People have been guiding me in the other threads.

I will open it open and see what's inside. I can barely reach it might need to get the full sized ladder to get to it.

I only mention because our VP said she just changed hers and a little light bulb went on for me... :)

Since I always forget what size filter I need, and had to climb the ladder to look, I cut the size marker off of one of the old filters and scotch taped it to the margin on the grill. Just looked, and it's 20x25x1. That way I can go buy the new filter, and only make one trip up the ladder.

"they" recommend changing the filter every 3 months. i'm not sure where "they" got that number but i can almost guarantee you that after 9 years the filter isn't letting anything through. if it's fire season and there is a fire near enough to smell it, changing them more often is smart

After 3 months down here, the filters are "distinctly" off color, but it wouldn't surprise me if they could easily go 4 months, if not 6.

But I have a 2 foot stack of filters in the garage, to last us the year.

I've not had any noticeable negative effects so far but will change it ASAP

=------

Went to Polyurethane the stained steps when I realized the edges were done badly and were inconsistently stained (by me) so I touched up the edges and rubbed it off and now letting to dry...AGAIN... :)

I can probably do the main board part while the edge dries

Stairs clear coated.

I overstained one of them not sure I want to get a step just for consistency...

F it I'm gonna replace it only $29

You might try wiping with mineral spirits. Check info on stain you used to see if compatible. Lightly dampen a clean rag with mineral spirits and wipe length of board, then wipe again with clean, dry rag. Then check color, repeat if necessary.

If used, make sure you don't toss damp rags in trash or wrap up in a plastic bag, newspaper, etc., they can ignite!!! Follow disposal instructions on can.

Thanks!

So...how dumb would it be to sand off the sealant and finish of existing wood floor (not nice hardwood or anything) with an orbital sander in stages vs. renting a large floor sander?

It's under 500 sq feet. I feel the real pain in the ass is moving all the furniture and then taping all the room off with plastic for the inevitable dust...

I dunno, the idea of sanding 500 sq ft, on your knees, hunched over, with an orbital sander. Can't see anything good coming from it beyond a partially sanded floor, loss of the will to live, and back pain.

But perhaps you're in better shape than I.

You might ask.........

I rented a sander with a shop vac connection that vacuumed while sanding.....
