Walmart shutting down 100's of stores

Yeah, heard the one by the airport off Hegenberger is closing. I went in there once to look for a last minute camping supply. It was a surreal and shocking experience. Kept asking myself, "where am I?" Most ghetto, depressing, dirty store I have ever been in. I could feel the collective sorrow in that place.

For me, that was a KMart off I-5 between Stockton and Sacramento. Nasty ass, ghetto store, pulled off the freeway for something to eat and drink, and take a leak. Garbage in the aisles, the toilet was overflowing turds down the hallway, you could smell it coming in the front doors, and the clerk just said "I KNOW.." when I told her about it. Didn't do a damn thing about cleaning it up. I guess the old "...not my job...", except when you make minimum wage, everything there is "Your Job".

i think the dudes point is a fair one. not sure how a family can justify amassing billions of dollars in personal fortune from a business model that leverages the absolute, and too often desperate frugality of its customers and its employees. how they can sleep at night is beyond me.

You don't get to be at the top of Forbes "Richest people in the US" or "Richest families in the world", by fucking around.

Don't know, don't care. My criteria is the shopping experience. I like well-lit stores with lots of space so I can actually see where I'm supposed to go. And that's not Walmart.

I have no problem with Walmart and was there just last night. I don't go there to browse, I go to get simple stuff like soap, razor blades, batteries...

The place was well lit and no problem finding where things were.

+1

I got physically ill when I entered the bedding aisle the first and only time I've been in a Walmart.

The fumes coming off the items on the shelves were so toxic.

Yeah nothing like a family of billionaires to profit off the back of the workers, the rich seldom want to share, even rarer still to believe in leveling the playing field to a fair match but then that is why I believe in collective bargaining and...well for my part i have never shopped at WalMart, ever, their odor can be smelled across the parking lot, and no way I give them any of my hard earned money! :laughing

Its a less than 5yr old building with modern lighting equal to any other large department store. Everything is in order with plenty of space to view merchandise.

Newer building look better than older building no matter the retailer.

Walmart is great for commodities at super reasonable prices. Those of you too pious to go there, I invite you to visit Whole Earth Foods and spend, be robbed, accordingly.

WM, please don't close the Vallejo store, I get my Little Debbies there....

If this is any relation to whole foods wtf can afford to buy there? My thing is issues and values and we all have to define for ourselves what values we will support is all-I vote my pocketbook also, as should we all!:thumbup

I said good day, sir!
That's like chastising us for thumbing our noses at McDonalds or Taco Bell.

Just because something is affordable and provides a service to those who need it, doesn't mean it isn't shit.

Again the disgust and thumbing of the nose at Wal-Mart is a luxury for some but not for others.

I did not say anything about the quality of goods or services provided versus other retailers/supermarkets.

I did say however that what they do have are goods and services that many people need, or like at a price they can afford.

Those people being the core group of consumers who have traditionally been ignored and rarely catered to by major retailers, i.e. people at the lower end of the income bracket.

Its these people who are benefiting from having 1 major retailer cater to them and push a price competitive business model that allows stores like Wal-Mart to open stores in places that Costco, Whole-Foods, Trader Joe's, Target, etc would ignore. Especially in those locations where other retailers/supermarkets would view as not being able draw enough upper income earners to keep their stores profitable.

They took a chance and invested in a business, ran it well for decades and became successful. They made a lot of money for others as well and provided jobs for people that needed one. If that's what you call profit off the back of workers, what do you call government employees? The Waltons rate at the top for charitable giving and so does Bill Gates and also Warren Buffet.

But Russ, hating the rich, is the New American Way. It doesn't matter how they made their money, some people seem to feel that the rich need to have all their money taken away and given to the people.

How about increasing salaries of their workers, if they're so generous? Why is there such a difference in pay between Walmart workers and Trader Joes or Costco workers, for what is essentially the same type of job? Just because people will accept it?

Well I guess you're lucky then, because most Walmarts are a lot older than 5 years.

At most Walmarts, you can't see where the next department is, because each department is stacked so high that you can't see the signs directing you to other departments.

Also, the stockboys are driving around at all hours of the day, instead of late at night like the more intelligent stores do. GTFO of my way.

Trader Joes, now there a dingy shopping experience. And I like the shit they sell.

It's a lot smaller, so it's much easier to shop. Much less walking to do. Oh and they pay more, and promote people faster, so the quality of employee is much better. I've never seen a ghetto-ass, sullen, slovenly employee at Trader Joe's.

Well then, Bernie Sanders is your man!

Walmart just substantially raised wages. That's why the stores that are not profitable with a higher wage structure will be closing, 269 stores. When you raise wages, you get better employees and the bottom people get dropped out of the process. The lower wage earners are pushed out by more qualified people. Walmart employees that feel underpaid should apply at Costco and Trader Joes. Of course Costco only employs 189,000, Trader Joes 10,000 but Walmart has 2.2 million employees so competition might be stiff for those few higher paying jobs.
