Walmart shutting down 100's of stores

I think there's nothing to see here. Their WalMart express idea is a failure, and they're going to wrap it up, close some Neighborhood markets, and implode the Brazil stores, etc. WalMart announced they'd be looking at some changes last fall, so this news isn't exactly surprising.

Yep, 102 of the closures are WM Express, their interpretation of a drug store, and 23 of them are Neighborhood Markets, their interpretation of a grocery, which has too much competition.

WM is finally realizing it can't compete in every type of retail channel.

Mthey have 11,000 stores? Wow.

You know I think their ecommerce presence really stinks though. I never think of going to Walmart to buy something there. I do go to target.com and have bought plenty of things there as they run solid promos. I think it will be a big issue for them.

I did a few bids on Wallys 'neighbor hood store' renovations. They did a bunch of them at one time, leasing the properties cheap and turned 'em over fast. a failed experiment, I don't think part of their long term plan, but the timing of the closings with the current market conditions is a little chilling. Shit happens fast.

I've never had a problem with Walmart online ordering (except when they first started online sales, and their instore pickup was total shite). Target is decent, but I've had problems with them offering items and then running out before the sale was over, which is BS. I had a lot of trouble with Toys R Us this holiday season though. The first few orders, fine, then it tanked. But, it was Xmas. Online is the future (for me it's the now) and anyone who's site or order fulfillment lacks, will be in dire straights. The only thing I don't buy online first is consumables, everything else is online.

I plead guilty to not patronizing Walmart. I hate the experience of shopping there. Just a funky waste of time. I feel the same way about Target. The only thing I ever buy at Target are printer cartridges. My employer gives us gift cards for xmas bonus and that's what I do with em.
I won't miss the Walmart experience.

But, one of these days, Amazon Prime is gonna blow the whistle and start charging a lot more. I consider Amazon Prime one of the major reasons big box stores are hurting. My sis lives out in the country. She orders TOILET PAPER by the case (as well as other mundane grocery items) and Amazon Prime brings it out into rural Mendo county fast and free (beyond annual charge). This simply cannot last. They are burning the gas so she doesn't have to. It's like China holding currency down long enough to put so many American companies out of business. The Post Office can't afford to send a letter across the country for 50 cents whatever. How can Amazon keep this up, I ask?

Etailers are dynamic, they can change in an instant. Setting up a big store etc is years in the making. Its a very weird paradigm. But it seems like store-based outfits never seem to get online right and we are all spoiled by Amazon, so our expectations are really high.

No great loss, though there are going to be some communities that are left with nothing because Walmart drove out the other businesses when they moved in.

As to the stock market dropping, that is just profit taking by the insiders, they are probably already buying back (more) of the stock that they dumped.

Many of them will probably find better jobs, Walmart is not a good employer.

probably. they keep telling us the economy is rock-solid and the job market is teeming with opptys, so it must be true.

meanwhile, the only one that seems to be hiring these days is our ever-expanding govt.

Have you ever been to one of those POS Wal-Mart's? Don't remember where I was, TX somewhere I think, Google a Wal-Mart and drive 30 minutes to pull up to one of those neighborhood market dumps. Was such a let down.

The true letdown was Fresh & Easy. What a joke that was. The one here in Danville shut down a year or two ago. I couldn't figure out what they were supposed to be. You couldn't buy loose produce, it was all shrink-wrapped, like 2 or 3 bell peppers in a styrofoam tray. WTF was that about?

Any additional wages will be lost because they don't have a Wal-Mart to shop at :laughing
Maybe not. Even though Walmart has a reputation for being cheaper (They are #1 for grocery's in CA, according to sfgate), their food is actually more expensive for most products. There are a few things cheaper in Walmart, like 5 quarts of synthetic motor oil, Sea Foam and thermal seal plastic envelopes, but most of the rest isn't really true.

I love Walmart. Especially the Superstores. My main local source of range ammo and misc. fishing stuff.
