Walmart shutting down 100's of stores

Walfart: great for basic auto maintenance shit. Cheaper than Autozone, et al, with less attitude and the stores are actually often cleaner. Good for basic fishing tackle, TP, DVD's, deodorant, soap, etc. If you don't want/need the gigantor Costco pack, but don't want to get totally bent over and given the high hard one.

The Supermercado de Walmart that used to be on Thomas and 91st AVE in Phoenix was awesome. It was like a Mi Pueblo on steroids. Looks like that concept didn't pan out though and they all have been shut down. Bummer.

Union City Landing is too much of a traffic pile up and shady stuff is always happening out front of the one in San Leandro, so I don't really go to WalMart around here. :dunno

Walmart is great for commodities at super reasonable prices. Those of you too pious to go there, I invite you to visit Whole Earth Foods and spend, be robbed, accordingly.
This.

Walmart has the best prices on European formula Mobil-1 for my Bimmer.

WM, please don't close the Vallejo store, I get my Little Debbies there....

So you either have to go spend your money in the most depressing store on earth that heavily relies on exploitation of its own labor pool, or whole foods, the most expensive grocery store in existence. I'm pretty sure there's a middle ground.

Fuck walmart, and every other company that exploits its employees and relies on subsidies (for the employees it exploits).

No doubt those tunnels were dug using non union illegal aliens.

:laughing broken record. WalMart exploits nobody. Subsidies- living wage, fast food, oh wait, there's a thread for that... :laughing

don't care about walmart one way or the other (lots of retailers out there - all with a useful purpose and a consumer base), but for some reason, i do enjoy seeing that they are not infallible and need to compete in the real world just like everyone else. might check their attitude, and set them back on their heels a bit (although that is probably wishful thinking). world domination is difficult to pull off after all lol.

Wal-mart stores are all about competing on prices for goods/services that would normally be out of reach of the working poor, or blue collar folk, etc. Which is something people don't understand and/or can't really grasp as they look down on Wal-mart and Wal-mart shoppers, etc.

In other words Wal-mart's core consumer audience are folks who are generally price sensitive consumers, i.e. people who do not have the luxury to thumb their noses at Wal-mart because their income bracket makes shopping at places like Costco very often a luxury, a cost prohibitive endeavor, etc.

Which when you realize this point of fact you then can judge people's real and unfiltered reaction to shopping at a place frequented by "the p00rs".

That's like chastising us for thumbing our noses at McDonalds or Taco Bell.

Just because something is affordable and provides a service to those who need it, doesn't mean it isn't shit.

Guess I haven't been paying attention. Do employees of Target earn more than employees of WalMart?
My major criteria for where to shop is distance. The social injustices of retail workers isn't really my war, especially since people decide themselves to work there or wherever.

Exploit? Is that code for supplying a job that you applied for? You know the employees don't have to work there, they aren't chained to the produce bins. If the wage is too low to support your lifestyle, you need a different job. It's not like they are staying for the retirement plan or health care benefit?

i think the dudes point is a fair one. not sure how a family can justify amassing billions of dollars in personal fortune from a business model that leverages the absolute, and too often desperate frugality of its customers and its employees. how they can sleep at night is beyond me.

Don't know, don't care. My criteria is the shopping experience. I like well-lit stores with lots of space so I can actually see where I'm supposed to go. And that's not Walmart.

I don't shop there but in some parts of the country Walmart is a big deal. The Walmart's around here really cater to the poorest of the population. Closing some stores is no big deal for them imho.
