8/7 Midnight Update

I am beat. Got home a few minutes after Midnight, jumped in the shower and am racked. Will get 6 hours sleep then back to the thrash.

A lot done today. Bike is mechanically back together and runs (started right up, no issues at all). That's good, no, GREAT news. Have a lot of little things to wrap on, but in general we are good. She sounds super tight.

Body and trim work goes back on Wednesday (tomorrow). We have tires to mount and balance, (5 sets) THANK YOU VIETS AND BRIDGESTONE, hoping Moy at RR can do that for us. 1/2 the crew is getting us loaded up for a week of food to feed 9. It's gonna be like a military outpost here tomorrow. 3 trailers to stock and load then we roll out on mission: Speed.

Goal is still Thursday departure, 14 hour straight drive from here to Wendover with two drivers per rig x3 rigs x3 peeps per rig. We tech on Friday, shakedown runs Saturday, then throw the hammer down Sunday.

Will try for some departure pix, and also others on the crew will be posting here as well. Keep your eyes open for our tech pass, then Saturdays first pass runs. I promise you that I wont hold anything back to get that Production Record and hopefully a Red Hat. She will be WFO baby from mile 3 to 5 and looking for that perfect record qualifier then a back up run. Cheers!

8/10

Well we had a bit of a setback in or journey last night. We decided to bed down for a few hours roadside in Nevada. Luckily we lived to tell about it and we're back on the road. We still have several hours left.

The journey continues and Bonneville awaits. The interwebz chatter says the salt is hard this year with four courses open (2 short for less than 175mph runs and 2 long ones for over 275mph).

Go time can't come fast enough as the team anxiously awaits. For several members of the crew this is our first time stepping on the hallowed ground of speed.

Short 8/11 update

Two shakedown runs in today after a total fiasco trying to dig the truck and trailer out of the mud. Pat and JD's mud bogging experience paid off big time.

The first run was 175mph, followed by a second one that was 183mph. We have a few things to work out but the bikes strong and we're confident about getting setting the record this week.

The weathers holding around 90ish, clear - no rain in sight. We are relaxing by the campfire awaiting some tri-tip. :drool

Tomorrow we will be out there as early as possible and hope to get in at least four runs.

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!! We'll sell ya the seat but you'll only need the edge!! :teeth

Today's update :

We found the electrical issue responsible for the hiccups late in the run. With the wizard's help we're getting it worked out and should be out there making a few more runs.

There are a record setting number of entries this year. Bonneville is alive with the sight; sound and smell of speed! :party

Two more runs complete. first one was 195mph.

Pulled a 196 as the last run on the lanes for the day. We are going to make some adjustments and get out first thing in the morning.

wish us luck! :thumbup

Morning run - 197mph. Creeping closer...
I think they said the humidity is 35%.
Wizard is downloading the data from the latest run. We'll make some tweaks and get right back out to the line.

Hi Budman and our other supporters,

Yes it is some serious dedication. The amount of time Papi and Pat have put into this is incredible. It takes all kinds of support. Im happy to be here and trying to help in any capacity I can.

Tonight we got in one run before that famous Bonneville weather kicked up. The salt is brutal when its pelting you at what feels like fifty miles an hour. Lol Anyway, on the last run we slowed down some and ran a 193. More tweaking and more runs tomorrow.

The humidity, density altitude and winds have not been in our favor. Today was the hottest day yet. We need to beat the sun tomorrow and get down to that line as early as possible.

Wish I could be there, maybe next year.

Thanks for everyones support, better luck at the next event in October when the air will be better.

8/16/12 Home Update

Well, it's hard to put into words all the emotion that goes into an effort like this. Besides being in the most restricted class in MC LSR, it's just brutal on all involved from start to finish.

Our team has been first rate. They deserve all the accolades, I just sit on the stupid thing and twist the throttle.

1. Pat Holmes - Did an above excellent job as crew chief so far this year. He has been my rock.

2. MotoJen - did the hardest of all jobs as the "everything" person. From wiping down parts to delivering gatorade, she did it all.

3. Third to none is my wife, Mrs. Papi (AKA Jemma) who never says no to me. Without her, none of this is possible.

4. My Niece Felicia who came out for the summer to learn all the learnings of PapiVille. She leaves to go back to college in a few days wiser and a lot tanner from Bonneville sunshine.

5. Kitty, JD and Crish who did whatever was needed to keep us moving forward and Dennis Parkinson for logistics on the second team trailer for peeps to lay their heads at night.

An awesome job by all. :hail

The results of SpeedWeek for us (and me personally) are very bittersweet. While we outperformed our previous SpeedWeek top speeds, we fell short with conditions that wouldn't let up. When you have a Normally Aspirated Motor, you get the air you get, nothing more. So when the Density Altitude reaches 7200', temps in the 90's and humidity at 20%, it's the perfect storm for failure.

We leaned the motor as far as we felt we could without hurting it. We may have gone over and hurt it a bit, we are not sure yet. But most of all, we need the better air that World Finals in October brings.

Our top speed at the event was 197.6MPH @ Mile 5, or 4MPH under the current record. We know she still has the ability, so we will take her back again. We also still have our Blown Fuel bike to get done, and since we can make our own air, I plan on not letting DA hold me back any longer.

Sadly, my chief competition in 1650P-P had an incident after the start that injured her from competing the rest of the week. My heart goes out to you Nancy, you are an awesome racer and I have had the great privilege of being #2 behind your skill and speed at Bonneville. Heal up soon.

In closing, we learned a lot on this trip about a number of things. But in the end, it's the team that makes the effort, not the rider. I am very proud of our all volunteer team and the countless hours of devotion to get a record. Each of them brought unique talents to our whole program for SpeedWeek, and I thank all of them for keeping me going on every pass we made from start to finish.

Congrats to Jim Hoogerhyde from the BA on his great performance BTW on his ride. Jim's a great racer and deserves a big hand for his effort in his class as well.

I will update this thread again as we ready for the next event in September then on to World Finals.
