Mmmmm...Faster

NOTE: This has become a continuous log that I started 4/3/12 and now spans season over season with the trials and tribulations of Top Speed, or Land Speed Racing. We race at three venues in the West; Bonneville Salt Flats, El Mirage and the Mojave Mile. Latest updates are at the end of course, and I hope you enjoy following our journey to be the fastest in our Classes on two wheels. Enjoy! --Papi

Timeline started: April 3rd, 2012
Latest Update Posted: 4/4/16 at the end of the thread. Now into the 2016 Season!

Updates also on my personal Facebook Page @: https://www.facebook.com/PapisPlace

Correction Update: We have changed classes on one bike from 1650 APS-BF to 1350 APS-BF. So instead of editing previous pages, new updates will say 1350 APS-BF instead. This was a displacement change we made last minute due to motor geometry changes we made.

I will put together a little play by play thread here so you can see a start to finish standpoint of LSR (Land Speed Racing) in the Motorcycle Class and two different bikes we run. This thread will be for the upcoming 2012 Season. (Edit, now into the 2015 Season!)

The first is our 1650CC Production/Production bike we have the record on aka 1650P/P. Production Class is by far one of the most challenging because of the severe limitations we work within. One of course is that the factory motor must remain in it's original factory cases, as does all body work including fenders. Lights get taped off, but all in all, it's a production machine. We are allowed to make internal performance modifications, as long as they cannot be seen and the bike looks and behaves the way it would as a stocker.

Next is our 1650CC Special Construction Partially Streamlined Blown Fuel bike, aka 1650 APS-BF.

Our 1650 P/P goal this year is to up our incumbent record in the mile of 191.895 to 200, and our speed in the 5 mile to 210+. This is a pretty big leap and we have a lot of work to do. Mainly going over our previous build sheets, seeing what missed, enhancing tuning characteristics, minor tweaks here and there. Basically push that Production Bike to the very edge.

On the 1650 APS-BF bike, well we have a bit of a blank slate. I hurt that motor pretty bad in one run last year (the mile) and we will have to go through it, find the weaknesses and build her the way we want. Our goal is to have a stable 400+HP in the first half of the year, then ramp her up with more boost and magic the latter half to over 500HP. I'm also not very happy with the body, and we will have a new body made (similar to the Charlie Toy design) or go more radical on the aero. This bike will not be as easy, since we have no real baseline like we do with P/P bike, hence, far more variables to overcome. I would like to see upwards of 275MPH this year on that bike. I am fairly confident we will far exceed 225 in the dirt on the mile, but 275 at Bonneville is gonna be a ride.

This weekend begins another complete teardown and bolt by bolt inspection. Every bolt, nut and screw will be replaced, marked and inspected. The motors will be torn down, measured, machined, assembled and placed on a motor dyno and testing room. In this room we can acquire over 200 data points of the engine and measure everything. It is here where we will get real HP at the crank.

Over the next 6 weeks, it will be a scramble right up to the first meet in May for a two day racing event where we will shake the bikes down first in Rounds 1 to 3, then see what they have in Rounds 4-6. If all stays together, we will be back at it once or twice a month in Bonneville and El Mirage chasing Record speeds in two classes.

Stay with this thread as I will post pix and results from our quest to 275 this year.

Below, the calm before the storm Our two horses waiting in idle for a complete teardown this weekend.

Hey Papi you should talk to Mille69, he's done 210 on a stock aprilla with 17/38 gearing IIRC. He could give you tuning tips..

-7 April Update-
Well a long week. It's Saturday night before Easter and this past week was a whirlwind. I went to San Diego to meet with the owner of the company integrating our Motec ECU's into the new harness systems to maximize every bit and byte of available data and performance. We are using an M4 and an M400 this year. We didn't have time to integrate the Motec system last year, so now it is getting done the right way.

After the trip to SD on Thursday, I came back Friday and started in on todays planning for tear down. Pat H. (ZoomSplatPat) spent the day at our shop assisting with tear down and parts storage. It's great having another set of competent hands when you have a lot to do.

Here's Pat unloading the weary travelers from San Diego at our shop in MH. The good news is we started dis-assembly Thursday when the harness measuring work took place.

As we got both bike unloaded, I chose the Production 1650 to tear down first as we have down it so many times, it's basically a two hour job with no interruptions. Just as that was about to happen, some visitors came by the shop and I was told the new team rider wanted to test fit the 1650P/P bike for the season. Of course this means I'm out of a job. :laughing

He's only 6, but the force is strong with this young Jedi.

Back on track, I was "allowed" to start working again.
IMG_0085.jpg

About 20 minutes into the job, body parts are gone and she is going nudie.
IMG_0087.jpg

This is what Bonneville does to bikes. Here is a Macro shot of the Throttle Linkage. Obviously this and most metal gets replaced.
IMG_0099.jpg

Motor out, she will go over to the other side of the shop to rest for a while now, then get stripped down of every bolt. Absolutely not one part will be untouched or replaced before she's run at the first event.
IMG_0106.jpg

Here's the heart of the beast. The motor will be completely torn down as well, everything inspected, rebuilt and fresh for her first race.
IMG_0108.jpg

Corrosion from the salt just eats everything. We are going to experiment this year with some different coatings to keep corrosion down to a minimum.
IMG_0109.jpg

Here's the big blown bike next up on the lift to get torn down. We already did a lot in SoCal on Thursday, so she's a little easier.
IMG_0114.jpg

Yeah, we like Fuel. :thumbup 80#'s will pump through this system. A Hi-Output Pump, Regulator and completely hard plumbed system will feed her with enough to burn of about 1.8MPG. Not exactly a Prius. :teeth
IMG_0118.jpg

I want to make some big changes on her. The suspension needs a lot of work and her CG needs to be down a bit more.
IMG_0112.jpg

Here's Pat dumping fluids getting ready for her motor to drop.
IMG_0121_2.jpg

The Turbo will need a significant overhaul as well. Oiling and cooling need to be addressed, plus the new Intercooler design.
IMG_0123.jpg

That's it for tonight. Next will be rolling chassis improvements and rebuild, motor tear downs, machining, motor testing and re-assembly. Stay tuned.

What is the stock engine/bike on those?

The ZX14 is the Factory ZX14 Motor. It runs under 1650 Class because the motor is larger than 1350, but under 1650. In P/P Class (Production Motor/Production Frame) we are very limited, including we must retain the factory cases (short and long block).

The Hayabusa we use the factory cases as well, but the motor displacement is pushed. This bike is considered Special Construction, so more wild than mild.

- 15 April Update -

Sent the Taxman my extension then dropped the Blown Fuel bike off at the Wizard today to be chopped up into nuggets of Horsepower goodness. Mmmmm, Blown Fuel.....
Lost my $1 bet with the Wizard on burnt hole in Piston vs. Valve through piston. Damn Wizard never loses, took my Taco money again!

Special thx to Pat H. for helping out today.
Pat has earned almost earned his LSR crew wings so far for 2012. :thumbup

A good volunteer crew and guys like Pat are hard to beat, they make it all happen when I go supersonic at WFO.

--> Want to Volunteer on our team? PM if interested.

7/1 Update

Yesterday I joined as a new volunteer on Papi's LSR team Shooting Star Racing. I will be popping in with some updates here and there...

This year the team is fielding two bikes : 1) continuing the 1650-P/P efforts with the ZX-14, and still looking for the record in that class. The engine is currently out of the bike and on the dyno. My induction began yesterday as we replaced the wiring harness to try and fix an electrical issue..unfortunately the replacement of the harness and several electrical components didn't help... but tonight, after some serious troubleshooting they got it running -- just a little time left to break it in before El Mirage on 7/15. I got to hear the roar through the phone tonight - thanks for the live update Pat. :thumbup

As Papi mentioned, he's got some more excitement in the stable this year. The second bike he will be running is a Turbo Hayabusa in the 1350 APS-BF class. In that class, the curent record is 247.503mph. This bike is all new to the team and won't get it out to run until Speed Week at Bonneville in August. More to come on that later.

That's all for now.

First Race : El Mirage; 7/15.

Special thanks to Papi for letting me be a part of the team and for having the patience to teach someone as he goes about his quest for moaaaarrrr speed. :)
