I read the reviews first, which were overwhelmingly negative, but then noticed the audience approval was over 90%.

The show is "pleasant" to watch but that's about it. It's not a comedy. It's not a parody. And it's certainly not a drama. It doesn't know what it wants to be. But it's effectively Star Trek with normal people, and not future space perfect people like the Enterprise.

Thoughts?

The first episode was a bit contrived and predictable. That said, I plan to give it a chance to see if it improves. A few of the characters are pretty interesting.

I saw just a few minutes and was puzzled over it. It keeps McFarlane busy. That dood is one high-functioning person....
I don't think I'll get into it though based on what I saw.

I was expecting Galaxy Quest crossed with Star Trek. The characters look funny but are not. I kept waiting for it to get funny but it didn't. Big pet peeve is traveling to another planet but it looks incredibly like Earth. I'll give it one more episode.

The main problem with these shows is the marketing. It was marketed as a parody/comedy, heavy on jokes. Literally all the jokes (all) from the show are in the trailer.

It's an homage, not a parody. It might as well be Star Trek.

I just wonder if the creators have control of their own concept.....maybe they are too ironic or snarky smart to actually create something coherent. I sometimes try and visualize what goes on in Hollywood insofar as all these smarty-pants cobbling together things that they feel the ignorant public will suck up so they can stay rich and stuff, but sometimes they get lost in their own fumes. McFarlane is a true talent but it's like he's always on the verge of breaking out of character to some further gag. So seeing him as a believable character in a story is hard for me anyway...

Puzzling..Because that's the thing, Star Trek has been parodied enough times that it will somehow have to be a parody of a parody of a show but somehow have enough serious story to keep viewers engaged...
.
When I first tuned in, I thought it was a reboot of Galaxy Quest or something...I think it might be a colossal bomb....

Rolls with it...
I still like "People of Earth" better.... :x

I'll watch, but if it doesn't get better it'll surely disappear. Seems kinda high budget for a bad TV show.

I say that out loud every time I get a hammer out of my toolbox and am about to swing it at something. My coworkers probably think I'm a mental patient, but I love that movie.

I don't even like Tim Allen and I still absolutely love that flick.

Caught a bit of "Other People" and thought it was ... ok.

Even after all these years, I still can't get into actors with some putty on their nose trying to be an alien.

At least Babylon 5 tried a bit harder.

I'll give this one a few more episodes. There have been a number of good series in which the first couple of episodes weren't great. Fingers crossed.

Did you know Galaxy Quest was voted the 9th best Star Trek movie? Alan Rickman killed in that movie.

Did you also know that Firefly is 15 years old? just wow........

I've also read nothing but negatives about The Orville..............

I just watched the 2nd season of The Expanse on DVD, and I thought it was pretty damn good. Some people didn't think it was as good as S1, but I though it was. Amos is the best. So we're all critics.

I read the books, been meaning to check out the show.

I totally agree, his show is a wacky Homage to Star Trek, not a spoof. I have doubts it will succeed.

I can see how he and his wife got along before she cheated, they have the same sense of humor (See: Anti-Banana Ray scene).

Saw the first episode, seemed more fan boy imitation than homage to me. Not particularly promising.
