I really can't figure this out. There are plenty of people who eschew corporate sports period, like academics and other elites, and find the fans to be a demographic they could live without. I am alienated from them just on this snobbery basis.

It would be fantastic if you would stop parroting the GOP line of 'academics are elitists in their ivory towers'.

I can first hand tell you that it's bullshit, dude.

They only snobbery here is you writing off an an entire segment of the population based on conservative dogma and the continued attack on education.

I see Reggie around town from time to time, for some reason he says hi to me, but I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm someone else.... :laughing

Funny Reggie story. He cut me off in traffic on Hegenberger years ago, so I pulled up alongside and yelled at him. We swore back and forth at each other for a while and then he pulled away.

At the next stoplight a car full of women pulled alongside excitedly and said: "Oh my GOD, do you know Reggie?"

The top 1-2% physically gifted men throwing, hitting, fielding balls in excess of 100mph.

A 90mph fastball takes .4 seconds to reach home plate after it leaves a pitcher's hand, but a hitter needs a full .25 seconds to see the ball and react. /QUOTE]

Physically gifted? No, talents with particular characteristics. Most of those guys couldn't run a 10k.

Not that long ago I was having lunch at a Thai restaurant in Seaside with my GF and he was in there. When he got up he came over, says "Hey, how you doing?" and extended his hand to shake mine, I did, exchanged some pleasantries and then leaves with a good "Good to see ya!"

My GF asks "Old friend?" and is a little miffed I didn't do an intro.

"No, that's Reggie Jackson..."

"How do you know him?"

"I don't..."

:dunno :laughing

And most people who run a 10k can't deadlift 300+lbs. If that's your standard for fitness that's pretty funny. Are you really hating on some guys that made it to the MLB? :rolleyes

Your lack of faith is disturbing. Or hilarious. Or D-U-M, dumb. But that's OK, we know you like the suburbs & no one here misses you.

LOTS of people stay in Oakland for their fun. Sure, people still go to the city for entertainment sometimes, but plenty stay in the EB too. Try to get a table at a well reviewed restaurant in Oakland on a weekend night. Hardly any easier than in the city. The caliber of acts playing the Fox is equal to bands playing the Warfield.

There are plenty of million dollar houses in Oakland that people are buying. And I'm sure some of those people are choosing Oakland and not settling for it.

The 650? Good lord, that's hilarious. Might as well get a tattoo across your forehead that says: "I GAVE UP."

:laughing Then why all the East bay people coming to the 415 to party all the time? The only people trying to live in the East Bay are the people who can't afford the 415 or 650, and aren't desperate enough to take Vallejo...

Professional sports exist ONLY to make the owners money.

They dont really care about you. Neither do the players.

Mostly by giving you a sense of collective pride based on a logo and adjectives of strength, superiority, and bravery.

Sports are around so that your cranky ass, after another shitty, pointless fucking day of typing on a keyboard, and a craptastic commute home, have something to distract you away from the laundry pile and ever growing stack of mail, you mean to sort on the counter---mostly trash, but that Big 5 flyer is always fun (even if you know the stuff their is Harbor Freight level of trash...speaking of, holy shit HF has a parking lot sale! Oh boy! Imma get moving blanket and floor jack now!). Oh yeah. Anyway. Go team. Let me get a beer and some chicken. Okay. This is good. Yay. Fun times. I forget why I contemplated driving off the Bay Bridge, again, after 10 years of commuting to that bullshit job of mine, because, horray the A's are only 17 games back from the wildcard! Let's run those numbers baby, trade away some assets and get into playoffs with role-playing scrubs again!!

So. Yeah.

Haha. No. Just. Hockey is better! Come on, let's fight, ball boyz!!!

Lol.

I'm just saying..people mad about subsidizing sports is silly. Of course they are expensive. But it is a social event that gives people a sense of caring about their city. Oakland is fucking up big time with their sports decisions.

I really like the coliseum and how its looked pretty much the same for however many decades. Super easy to get in/out of too. Just clean it and care for it and run it. Not everything needs modern styling.

I so agree.

And get rid of Mt. Davis!!!

You did read the part about it being privately funded right?

Also, getting rid of Mt. Davis and staying in the current spot is polishing a turd. It would have cost 10s of millions if not a $100 mil to update that stadium. It takes several innings to typically get food, if they sell out or anything close, good luck walking around to your seat, there's no room.

Oakland needs something new the residents can get excited about and leaving the location where two of teams played for decades is a good idea.

They can't update the Mausoleum. The infrastructure is failing. It would literally need to be bulldozed and rebuilt.

Rolls with it...
... so do they keep the arena, when all is said and done and the teams play there no more, for other events? ... or do they doze the whole site?

John Kruk tells a story about how one time he was in a restaurant pounding beers and wings and an old woman walking by started to chide him, telling that, as an athlete, he shouldn't be eating like that.

He responded, "Lady, I'm not an athlete. I'm a baseball player!" :laughing

There is a good FAQ on oaklandballpark.com and one of them is "What is going to happen to the Coliseum site"

We plan to help create a regional sports complex, to include a recreational multi-use sports complex and an Urban Youth Academy for baseball and soccer. The new sports complex will be part of a broader public-private partnership between the A's and various agencies. The proposed plan includes substantial new housing options - including affordable housing - as well as a skills center, community gathering space, hotel, and office and retail development. This type of project will ultimately help the Coliseum site realize its full potential for the residents of Oakland for the long-term.
