Glad you are OK Tharkun! Thanks for getting her off the road(s).

Make it a carrot.
Cost... $50. Open DMV RETESTING to the public. Make it an upgrade from a normal DL, get a break from insurance companies if you have the improved rating.
I'd do it, to lower my insurance, fees go to CHP like registration fees. No I don't like getting pulled over for speeding, but to speed is a choice we make, or don't... yeah right maybe when I had my 450, but that was lack of power, not choice per se. ;)

You know, that's probably one of the best ideas I've heard on how to approach something like that ever!

I feel like the DMV should make you re-take your driving test once you hit a certain age...it's mind blowing to me that a completely sober person can go the wrong direction on the freeway.

Although there are so many terrible younger drivers on the road too, so maybe the driving test isn't hard enough :confused

the sad part is most of the elderly are not exactly sober.

they are high on the meds the dr says they must take....

or they are not taking the meds the dr says they should take.

I make words too.
What did she say when you pulled her over? Had she figured out she was going the wrong direction yet?

Uhm... I've been riding motos since the mid-80's... spent 3 years moto-only... have been a track day instructor, and been racing for 3 years... have yet to toss a bike down the road... please tell me why I should be "forced" to take the "Experienced Rider Course"?

For the same reason that the old lady that has never had a ticket or accident in 70 years of driving needs to retake a test. Catch problems before they are problems. Also, none of the bad drivers I have ever talked to think they are bad drivers/riders.

I flipped a u turn and went after her. She ended up stopping in the center divide and I stopped in front of her. She had her license taken away and sent back to the DMV for an emergency re-eval and got a ride home

Wow - that was scary reading dude - so glad you managed to swerve out of her way.

And thank you for then picking up the pieces and getting her pulled over and off the road - you probably saved more lives both today, and in the future.

:ride safe everyone. Look out for the plentiful idiots, incompetents and inattentive. There are too many around!

Adverse Selection
That, and glad you're ok...!

My wrong-way motorcycle story is turning onto the entrance ramp for 405 in Bellevue, and having to swerve out of the way of a car coming up the entrance ramp the wrong way. It was 10 in the morning on a clear day, and they were a professional-looking middle-aged couple - cluelessness knows no age barriers...

Well now, it was Bellevue.

Google cars can't arrive quick enough! These stories scare the shit out of me. Plenty of stupidity out there without having to worry about something coming at you at the equivalent of 110+ mph. Jesus! Glad you're ok and pulled her over! :thumbup

OP-
Glad you made it through okay, and also that you were able to take care of the problem!

In general-
I commuted for years in Monterey County, between Salinas and Monterey, mainly on Blanco, 183, or 156; all skinny two-laners, one each direction. Tons of bad passers on all of those roads...

I hearkened back to a bit of advice my uncle gave me about driving on two-laners: if you see an oncoming passer getting too near, grab the shoulder and use your turn signal so that they know that you're breaking right (fairly easily done given the sightlines on all three roads).

I had at least three instances of letting the bad passer zoom by in "my" lane at an aggregate 110+ without incident. I shared this tactic with a friend of mine who had been puzzled by my maneuver, and he has used it to his advantage a couple of times himself.

"Arrive alive" is the name of the game.
