So you like racing but hate Formula One...why you should watch Sunday's race though

The Porsche IROC cars were awesome. And the color palette was so cool. Good days.

When NASCAR cars were actually like cars you could buy...

1950's? Even in the mid 60's, the cars were far from their showroom variants.

I watched NASCAR back in the late 70's and early 80's.
Yeah, Bill Eliott schooled the whole field, he was the MAN back in those years.

His son just did the same thing in the last two races of 2020. It was exciting shit to see if he was gonna make it to the final round where the championship race off was going to be determined. I really like Chase Elliott...a lot of his dad in him and only the 3rd father son NASCAR champions.

NASCAR has always had a cloud of suspicion when it comes to fixing races.

"The call". Remember Danica winning pole at Daytona after Jr. helped her out?
No one has been able to definitively confirm it, but it's long been suspected. Then again, they're all cheating as much as they can anyway regardless...

Yesterday’s race was something. I was cheering Russell on after the screwed up pit stops, he had the pace and showed the ability to pass (hello, Mr Bottas?) and then got the slow leak/puncture.

I’m betting there were a number of Fuck, Fuck, FUCK!s coming over his radio. Bottas is under contract for ‘21.
Wonder how much $ he’d take to leave allowing Russel to join the works team. Though Wolff is saying otherwise https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...sell-WONT-replace-Valtteri-Bottas-season.html

And, yeah, Romain coming out of the fire like some Phoenix was incredible last week.

Let's put the brakes on for a sec (and not catch them on fire): I like Russell, but one outing at an essential cube with some S turns for a track in the fastest car does not mean Russell is "The guy", yet. 55 second laps don't tell a great story of a driver neither.

I pray Russell gets another shot in a week. Then, we'll know how good he is. I think this was a great showing for him and I think he's an exceptional driver, but if I was looking to sign him, I'd want some more evidence he is the guy.

Well...let off the brakes a bit then...

George Russell has finished as fastest man driving for Mercedes on the final day of the Pirelli test at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi.

If MB didn't think he was capable, they would have put Stoffel Vandoorne in that seat instead of him.

Rolls with it...

Geez guy, I even included a pic of the 1983 Thunderbird race car. Compare how that car looked next to an actual showroom Thunderbird SC.

How does the cookie cutter Camry compare to the showroom model?

Don't be so daft. :laughing

All the Gen-6 cars are essentially the same. And the Gen-7 cars will to. At least they are going to a 6-speed sequential manual transmission and IRS. And going to a 18" wheel with a central lug nut. Should make pitstops a bit quicker. Speaking of pitstops, changing the refueling system to.

All this shit they should have done 20 years ago. But, good ol' boy mentality gets in the way from innovation at times.

Ahhhh. It's not what's on top, but under the shell. They're running trickery with those "just like the showroom" shells. Dudes still think Grand Nationals were racing on super speedways!

Bill France...

Carburetors?

Easier to control who's cheating fuel systems. EFI when it first came out was a bit of an issue with "black box" hacking, etc. Still, NASCAR waited forever to adapt.

From the very beginning of the race though he showed his superior race talent to that of Bottas in my view.

The passing at the end prior to his slow leak which forced him to pit was aggressive yet "safe."

He was without a doubt going to catch Perez for the win.

I was happy for Perez of course.

Whatever that means
I think it was best possible outcome. GR got to show everyone what he could do with propper kit, Perez and Ocon got good results, Bottas saved some minor face by finishing above GR not to his own doings though.

Biggest losers were the Mercedes pit crew. Felt bad for them. That guy on the FL tire you could just see his world falling apart.

IDK, I blame management for not having thought of how to avoid that with a rushed stacked stop in the first place.

But dayum, for Mercedes to have done that must have elicited more than one chuckle from other pit crews over their post race beers.

The ribbing will likely never end from other pit crews. :laughing

"Yeah, you guys have won championships but nobody has EVER screwed up like that before Mate!"

There have been plenty of times with other teams where the wheel came off after they released the car. I don't think that any of the crews from those teams will be saying anything... :laughing

Well, you are correct but that is a "normal" thing that happens, unfortunately, numerous times per season.

This, to me, was on another level of fuckup by Mercedes of all people.

I can see the T shirts now in the paddock with a play on this:

The Mercedes-Benz Slogan is “The Best or Nothing.”

Russell is a new element added into the team. Where Hamilton and Bottas and known, a new/ different driver brings complications. I chalk it up to that. Also, no pit crew is perfect. That one of the tire changes caught the mistake quickly was good.

Except it was MERCEDES.

You know, the team that has won seven constructor's championships in a row.

No team in the history of F1 has done that, not Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Williams, Cosworth, nobody.

Maybe I just like to see the top dog screw up big time once in a while.:laughing

I feel the same as Geoff. Mercedes and Hamilton have been winning for far too long. It was great seeing the top dogs knocked down a few pegs.
