I am officially on the wait list...For F*CK sake, I had a minor stroke or something and completely forgot to drop off my application last week. It sounds like I am probably going to get in anyways. Either way, I will be getting a room in Bragg and camping out Friday night.

Would anyone be interested in doing a pre-SI shakedown ride at Stony the weekend of 5/5-5/06. I need to get out on a long ride to see if my recently broken body and repaired bike are up to a long dual sport ride so I’m thinking about a 65-75 mile loop. Basically from Davis Flat north up to M3 and looping around to M10 and back down. This would not be a trail ride and limited or no single track, just some fire roads. It’s all easy for the most part with a few rutted sections that a noob might need to navigate carefully or with a bit of help. There will probably be a few creek crossings, but hopefully they will be low like last time I did this ride. It takes about 3-4 hours with a few breaks and maybe a lunch break if taken at a leisurely pace. I’m planning on a leisurely pace since I’m still going through Rehab on my shoulder.

I might not even be able to complete this ride at all or I might require multiple breaks. Ideally I’d head up Friday night after work to grab a site and head out Sat morning on the loop and camp Sat night. I’m a bit hesitant to do this alone since I’m still a pretty beat up from my crash in Baja in January so I figured I’d post here to see if anyone else wants to do it.

It’s a pretty easy loop, but if you are unsure of your bike or dirt ability for the SI it would be a good way to shake out any bugs ahead of time. I had been planning to do this at StonyBARF 10.5, but they changed the dates on that gathering to later in May..

Hey Cabrito!

Super-fun loop, I'll try to make it if I can on 5/5-6 ... :ride

... if it turns out that you're feeling
frisky, Sheetiron Mtn is a short easy
in and out just a few miles from where
your route pops out on M3 ... you could
visit Sheetiron Mtn on your Sheetiron shake-down ride ... :laughing

last time I tried to get up there it was blocked by
a huge tree, but I think it's maintained
because of a radio tower and one of those
GPS tectonic-plate thingies ... :party

John,
I'd love to spend some time riding around Mendo with you, and spend some time around an actual campfire with you.

Let me know because its not likely I'd do this alone considering how banged up I am from Baja right now.

... you can show me the climb up from
the North Fork of Stoney Creek on FR18N03! :party

... there were just 80 plated-dirt-bike people signed
up for the recent DirtyBARF, I'm sure
you'll get a handful of people interested
in a Sheetiron shake-down ... :thumbup

... will you camp Saturday night only,
or both Friday (5/4) and Saturday (5/5) ...?

Probably camp Friday and Saturday, likely at my preferred site further down the road from Davis Flat / Grey Pine area. It's quieter and close to the river for a soak if it's hot.. Arriving late Friday after work unless I can get out early. Most of the StonyBARF folks are real dirt bike riders and not likely to be into the more pedestrian fire road type of riding that requires a license plate.

OK, sounds good to me ... I'll try
to leave work early on 5/4 and try
to find you in Fouts Springs Friday night ... :ride:party

With others, I just rode the M3 over Sheetiron Mountain during StonyBARF 10.0. The down tree from last year has been removed and the washed out section repaired. There was, however, still about a quarter-mile section of snow. Much less than last year and we blazed the first set of tracks through it so it should be easy to cross now.

... did you guys do the little in-and-out to the tippy-top
of Sheetiron Mtn? It's a short couple-mile two-track off M3 ...
I got turned around on the in-and-out by a huge fallen tree ... :party

... the road to the
top of Sheetiron Mountain is well and truly blocked ...

... the radio tower at the top of Sheetiron Mtn ... that's Mt. St. John looking
toward Fouts Springs ...

Oh, I got your meaning now. No, we didn't turn off for the actual summit, we stayed on the M3 so ignore what I wrote. Last May, Cabrito and I encountered a much smaller down tree on the M3 itself. It has been removed since then.

Lemme know. It's not going to take many cancellations for me to get a ticket to ride.

I'm going to wait and see the ortho doc on friday before i officially start canceling things. who knows, maybe he'll have miraculous news. otherwise ill transfer my spot to you next week.

Hoping you are going to show me the way to SI mountain, or maybe we go harass the folks at the ADV Mendo rally... I'm sure we'll run in to some of them.

My rehab has been slow, but I'm seeing some progress and looking forward to seeing how I hold up on a long ride.
