No more Columbus Day in SF

Or we could have a day dedicated to the true spirit of Columbus day: spend the day discovering the true history of a significant event, instead of the mythical, disney-fied recounting that we've been told.

I honestly can think of very few people that deserve days and statues. Half the statues need to be taken down 50 years later because NOBODY CARES what some military dude did in the 17th century, and turns out he was a racist slave owning child diddler.

I can't imagine admiring anyone so much I desire to build an ICON to their greatness...seems pretty anti-monotheistic too from the Judeo-Christian perspective.

How many people complain about confederate statues and those of the conquistadors literally stepping on the natives?

I never knew Columbus was such an asshole but I never had enough interest to look into it.

There are people who have accomplished great things while have a character that was worth looking up to. I like the tradition of recognizing such people.

Same here on Columbus being an ass, but I also knew he wasn't the first to set foot on this continent by a longshot.

I agree with your second paragraph as well.

Our friend who is a proud Italian living in North Beach says regardless of what happened yesterday, there will still be an Italian Heritage Parade and the locals will still call the weekend Columbus Day weekend

And what's his defense of that?

No defense. There is a concentration of proud Italians living in North Beach still. It has been a tradition celebrating their heritage every year. The vote yesterday is shocking to the NB community.

I am not strongly on any side but I can see their point. She is not on barf. I cannot speak for her.

Goes to show the Supervisors can name a day what they want but you can't change people's beliefs overnight or expect no resistance to the change

The name of Columbus Avenue is next on the chopping block ..

East coast Italians get all hung up on it too. It really is a failure of teaching/learning history. Like most things it will take a generation or two to break down the myths around Columbus. I'll tell my kids the truth.

And that's the real rub. I appreciate the symbolic gesture of SF no longer honoring Columbus, but the government, neither on the city nor state nor federal level really has any business determining how individuals want to celebrate something significant to them.

SF doesn't have any official recognition of Pi day, but they can get fucked if they want to stop me from making math jokes or enjoying a pie on march 14th.

Pretty sure anyone with the wherewithal to cross an ocean and the weapons to enslave the local natives was within his right, in 1492.

Judging history thru your present day self-righteous lens, tsk tsk.

I grew up on North Beach and yep, all very true. In fact growing up at my school Columbus day is a HUGE week long celebration.

i am sure the younger generation can learn easily how to disassociate Mr. Columbus from taking pride in their Italian heritage by taking part in the festivals. The traditional dances and songs are what puts me in a trance. it is the older generation that is in a state of uproar.

And what "right" is this? Imperialism? Manifest Destiny?

Interesting how you view human equality as a relatively modern view.

Even Columbus's biggest fan, Bartolome de la Casas knew that Columbus's actions were completely fucked, and after breaking with him, dedicated his life to repairing the harm that Columbus had wreaked.

It's just tribalism as noted. Not to be respected, admired, or maintained. The next generation won't be coming out for Genocide the Local Populace day.
