Home security cameras

I monitor data usage on every wifi device and the Arlo data usage is pretty miniscule. First of all, they aren't always on. they only record and upload to Netgear when there is movement -- and you can set the clip size. 1-minute = to something like 3mb.

Thanks for the correction, Stan. I was under the impression there was a lot more getting transferred. Now, I am in the market for some cameras.

Seems there is much more on the market now than when I bought my Arlo set (mid 2015) The Blink looks good, as are fully wired systems.

The thing Arlo has going for it is setup and deployment was literally a 20-minute affair. The uptime has been surprisingly good--remember, all live view, cloud videos have to go through their servers. Battery life has not been an issue for me.

The clips are small enough to where I was easily able to view them when I was in Europe with a spotty 3G connection.

Bought and installed the Arlo Pro 3 pack from Costco. I installed the app on 3 iPhone's. However, one of the phones is having issues with the talk to cam function. I cannot click the "mic"...its greyed out. Tried uninstalling and installing with no luck.

Still haven't found a way for remote backup someone mentioned hiding a hard drive somewhere but that's beyond my skills for setup.

I have a Q-See system that i purchased from Costco 1.5 years ago. I installed the camera's, but finally finished my wiring work. My system is the 8 channel, 4 camera, 1 Tb system. It was $299. They all are outside cameras. One camera had 2 - 60 foot cables, that one was giving me poor resolution. I disconnected one of the 60 foot sections and I ran the wires in a more direct route to the hard drive, so I only need 10 more feet of bnc cable to make it reach.

I'm hoping that my image quality will improve.

The India based customer support has been great. It took them 2 hours to setup my phone viewing, but I am happy to be able to check my house while traveling.

Bought a house and inherited a Ring doorbell cam.

Overall opinion: meh.

I am intrigued by their spotlight cam and considering installing one. They seem a little pricey compared to some of the systems mentioned here though.

Home security camera systems are nearly worthless. It's just alot of equipment and configuration for something that doesn't really provide much value. What's it going to do for you? Maybe catch a blurry image of an unknown package thief that you can upload to BARF to show your outrage? Burglary is extremely rare, all the more so when you consider that consumer electronics aren't really worth much anymore. Your average hood rat already owns a PS4 and a 52 inch TV.

On my home I have several fake cameras mounted, mostly to deter some idiot which was leaving cigarette butts around my driveway. You can get most of the value of the cameras by putting up fake ones.

:rolleyesWell, my piece of shit neighbor backed into my wall and knocked it down. Then he said "sue me," and "do what ya gotta do," and I showed the video to the cops and the cameras paid for themselves that very day. So...:party

Burglary is extremely rare

I don't know what systems you've looked at, but home security camera's have evolved considerably in the last several years.

I just installed a 1080P wi-fi system that was under $200 that takes very clear video even in full dark.

It does have value, not only would it act as a deterrent (thieves will more likely move on to a house without video surveillance) but also a means to find the asshole that broke into your car, house, etc. The wi-fi means that the thieves don't have wires to trace back to the unit.

Anyone here have experience with the ring doorbell / cam? Seems like an expensive way and cheap way to have a cam setup facing the front door.

Peace of mind while away is priceless. :dunno

Anywhere I am with internet connection, I am able to suddenly ensure that wherever those cameras are, things there are still exactly as they should be.

I have one that came with our house when we bought it last August. Mine's a gen 1 model, so the picture is fair to poor. The brightness of daylight washes out the background, so you can only see the porch. When it detects motion, its not running beforehand so you don't see the person walking up and its often slow enough that you might see the back of the UPS guy walking away after ringing the bell.

Am I glad its at the front door? Sure I guess.
Would I buy another one? No.

There are other cameras available that work much better. The wireless IP cameras like Ring are for people that are unable to DIY a decent camera setup.

I've heard of crooks walking away with them if that helps.

Question: My Ring device was stolen! What should I do and is there anything that Ring can do to help me?

Answer: Yes. Ring has a procedure and policy in place that will help you get a free replacement Ring device as quickly as possible after your Ring device has been stolen. The remainder of this article contains the steps you should follow.

So if it has no wires, now you need to change the batteries all the time?

Deterrence can come from fake cameras. Has anyone here actually experienced a true tangible experience that justified the expense and effort of putting operational cameras in place? Even if you caught someone doing something you didn't like, that doesn't necessarily count unless you were able to rectify the situation. For instance, my buddy got footage of someone carving something into fresh cement on his driveway, but all it really gave him was a general type of person (white, female, long brown hair) to channel his anger towards :laughing He posted her pic on nextdoor, and nothing ever came of it.

There are wires, power wires for the camera, just none of the 100' long wires leading back to your recorder/controller.

Most of the fake camera's that I've seen are obvious fakes, the good fakes still aren't very good and probably don't fool too many professional thieves.

As to the quality, they have gotten quite good, full 1080P and higher for under $300 for 4 camera setup in wifi. If you don't mind running the wires, it's cheaper. Also, the night vision on these cameras is quite good now.

They have evolved a ton in the last several years. Judging current one by seeing images from mid-level ones from 10 years ago doesn't come even close to understanding the level they are at now.
