I've been running my CBR on 87 for almost 10 years. Both street and track. :dunno

I have never considered this to be something to be superstitious or confused about. Your manual specifies 87, use 87. Some people also swear by certain brands of fuel which again I have never seen any noticeable difference.

I have heard Cheveron's additives are superior to other brands but have never seen data to back up the claim.

I take whatever the manual says with a grain of salt.

Most car/bike manuals also include language about not 'racing' the engine. Or rabbit starts. or whatever. Also say keep the engine under X000 RPM for X000 miles.

I remember years ago when I got my RC51, the sticker on the tank said 93 octane. I, living in CA, said well this is kind of a shitty deal here.

A couple times I put half a tank of 100 octane in just to see if I could feel a difference. And maybe placebo...but I swear that think felt like it had just a little more power than normal.

power to weight ratio was better because your wallet was lighter :twofinger

Yeah what do those silly engineers know anyways.

I don't think engineers are the only ones who have a say in what gets written in owner manuals.

I appreciate all the experience and knowledge you have but I think we can agree that some things published in owner manuals are bullshit. If you followed the manual to the letter, your car/bike should never be anywhere near the redline.

I believe Dr Rob's opinion hold the most weight on this topic.

Nothing in the owners manual for my bike says not to rev it to redline.

Speaking of gas, I remember during my Supra days going to one of the few gas stations that had 100 octane unleaded and getting to hit the high boost setting, it was the same as treating yourself to a steak dinner or top shelf whiskey.

I respect Rob's opinion. The rev limiter was just one example. I cited others.

You guys like track days right? We all do. If you followed most owner manuals, we probably shouldn't be doing that either.

Track days not mentioned in the manual either.
I use only the manual recommended oil and gas. Don't see any reason not to.
I follow the recommended break in, don't see any reason not to.

Ya, it doesn't take 1000 miles to break a motor in. Not only that, beating on it is how one breaks it in.

Do you also never drive over the speed limit and fully stop at every stop sign? Have you kept track in a log of every time you changed your oil or did any other maintenance yourself? Because not doing so could void your warranty.

I'm not trying to say we should all disregard everything an owner's manual says, never change you oil, don't rotate your tires, etc,

But not everything in the manual is how things work for real. But legally, it has to be written and documented.

In the past I changed my oil right on schedule with the manuals suggestions and I recorded the mileage and dates it in the blank pages at the back of the manual.
I did my own valve adjustment on bikes where it was needed and sold other bikes for newer ones before they got to the point of needing a valve adj.

Current bike I bring to the dealer for oil changes. The guys there have been cool with me by fitting me in on my schedule and working around theirs.

There are no manufacturer guidelines on speeding or stop signs so not sure where that is going.

Alright, boy scout. My fault. Didn't really understand who I was dealing with obviously.

I'm sorry.

Alright so you're gonna play the opposite hyperbole assuming I have a rat bike.

That's fair.

I'm sure you're proud standing by your dealership maintained bike at starbucks.
