Dakar Rally, Jan 2nd - 15th, 2021 **SPOILERS!!**

yes, agree, look at how long some of the Dakar stages are and how folks struggle to finish after dark, and I’m like no way ... :facepalm

you have to admit the Classics class is interesting, especially if they add motos someday.
I could do at least as well as the gentlemen campaigning the Peugeot pick-up truck, maybe, god bless them. :x

I'm with you in the classic class as co driver. We could even carry a pretty deluxe and extensive camping kit in the Peugeot pick up... rugs and all! :thumbup

enjoyed this:

youtu.be/46ypx6Uh_ps

tl/dr: vid of DAF 3300 4x4 "Two Headed Monster" (1984), in action at 2:40 ... guessing this was the most expedient way to fabricate a dual-engine rally racing truck, and must have been a precursor to the mighty 1988 DAF Turbo Twin X1.

those were the days. :laughing:gsxrgrl

We could enter my old rangie in the classic class! If I ever get it running again! :laughing

:thumbup

we'll make 1962siia be the driver, and I'll toodle along from bivouac to bivouac and be your team's designated campfire captain ... :laughing

as usual, 1962siia cuts right to the solution ... always first look in your garage and make something that's already there work.

actually think the Kawasaki KLR 650 has some Dakar pedigree. there's a youtube hunt for me, while we await Mr Brabec's second GC win ... :party

edit:

2007 Dakar Rally, Team Green Dakar out of the Netherlands.
reading they must have had THREE KLRs for their three racer team (Peter Oosterbeek, Nol Bikker, and Michael van den Enden).

:laughing:laughing:toothless

actually, sure there must have been KLR 600s entered at some point, which may be an even better Classics Dakar choice ... :dunno
but, not already in my garage, duh. :facepalm

I'm glad to be able to share the video's.
Since I seek and enjoy them it's no problem to link them up here.
Unfortunately we aren't getting very good coverage so these little snippets can keep the Dakar appetite somewhat sated. The ADVrider thread is fun to follow because there's contributors on line there that are at the event. And sharing pictures and videos.

While looking to see if the TW200 had ever competed in the Dakar I found that Shinji Kazama, a TW200 Legend, did compete albeit on a Suzuki 500 in the 500 class. Although he did ride the TW to the North and South poles as well as 6000 meters up Mt. Everest (twice), Alas, no TW's in the Dakar. :(:laughing

In 1982, Kazama became the first Japanese national to finish the Dakar Rally. He won the Dakar Rally in the 500cc class in 1984. In 1987 he won the Rallye des Pharaons in the 250cc class.

In 2004, while again participating in the Dakar Rally, Kazama was struck by a big rig, mangling his left leg. He was flown to a hospital in Paris, where the leg was saved, but Kazama was left reliant on a cane to walk.

edit/add. Looks like he was on a DR500 in a pic in this article. --> The Remarkable Resilience Of Shinji Kazama

I did find this cool page on the Honda History at Dakar. In 4 parts.

Honda Racing Dakar Challenge

:thumbup

Mr Kazama is awesome, as is that 4 part Honda Dakar history link ... :gsxrgrl

also loved the Honda rent-a-racer program from 1979:

HONDA XL-250S

Sensing that there might be something to this new competition and wanting to showcase its new trail bike, Honda offered entrants of the first Dakar Rally a discount on the Honda XL-250S.

The deal also included complimentary factory support with a DC3 airplane, an 8 man support team that included 4 engineers, and 2 unimogs to carry tents and gear.

Twenty-nine Honda XLS motorcycles participated in the 1979 Dakar Rally and 15 crossed the finish line in Senegal. Third place went to Philippe Vassad piloting an XL-250S.

Mr Vassad, 1979:

The Story of the First Dakar Rally – 1979

always impressed that 29 guys had enough sense to grab that deal in 1979 ... probably the "easiest" Dakar ever, at least in terms of showing up at the start with support and a bike. :laughing

While checking out the Joel Robert link Budman put in the RIP thread I found that pages Dakar coverage. Here ---> MCNews Aus.

Including this comment and shot of Toby Price...

“Well, I’ve finally broken my 30th bone! Crashed out in Stage Nine yesterday, I don’t remember much but I’ve got a pretty sore collarbone, shoulder and hand and will need surgery for that… Disappointed to not make the finish and let down the KTM Factory Racing team and my sponsors but that’s racing unfortunately this time around. Thank you Sam Sunderland and Ricky Brabec Racing for stopping to help me, I was off with the fairies that day but I heard you took good care of me!”

30 bones... :wow

He is approaching Evel Knievel level. Only 423 more to go. :laughing
433 is the Guiness book record. Ouch.

Here's the Sat view of todays stage 11.

stage 11 sat.JPG

And the route map.

stage 11 route.JPG

18:41 Stage 11 shortened, timetable stays the same.
The recent weather in the final stretch of stage 11 as originally designed has forced the organisers to shorten the course by about 50 kilometres to avoid the area. However, dunes remain the backbone of this decisive stage, which is going to put the competitors and their vehicles through the wringer!
