Queen of DAKAR!

Thank you! She truly is a badass. I've been following the Dakar for many years, and there's always been a woman to root for and cheer on, but there's never been a woman like Laia. She's made the last 11 years so much more fun and interesting for me. I owe her a debt of gratitude for all the joy she's given me!:)

OMG... what a stage! :wow Ricky wins stage, Honda goes 1,2,3 in stage and general standings after today. Howes finishes stage 4th. :flag

But....

Nacho Cornejo out. Yes, out. Big crash, lost time, finished stage in 11th, 3rd in general rankings only a minute behind K Benavides the new general leader with Ricky 2nd trailing the leader by only 50 seconds in the general... Then Nacho retires from this years race after medical looking over him.

There goes my dream of an all Americas final podium. :x

Sunderland will inherit 3rd in general 10 minutes back with Bang Bang in 4th 15 minutes back. Both suffering from previous crashes. Like to say its too separate races, one for 1st and one for 3rd... but who knows?

Two to go. Final stage 12 is reverse order start no? So no yo yo. Safe for Ricky to go balls out and try to win stage 11 tomorrow?

Has there ever been as many elite riders suffering from crashes in a single rally?

What a day. Time to go back to bed.

What a BUMMER!! for Nacho! He sent out a message saying he was going to be ok, but had been knocked unconscious in his off.

This has been a crazy rally so far. The next section is the longest of the rally, through tons of dunes so lots of opportunity to get lost, stuck, broken, etc. No telling what will happen, but its looking really good for Honda at the moment.

SKYLAR HOWES is a beast!!! :flag. Get that man a factory ride already!!

And I think my personal hero of this year is James Alexander. Its guys like him who keep guys like me excited about Dakar, because if he can do it, maybe I could too. :laughing. :thumbup

sure you saw this ... first choice for me would be an XT500 (or maybe a 950 Adventure, or 640 ADV, or 800 GS :laughing), but SECOND choice would be a DAF race truck, ftw:

Mr De Rooy has a heck of a museum, and is a fun interesting interview. have to see if I can find a worthy YouTube vid of him ...

Since it's a bit quiet right now, here are a few shots from yesterday.

My favourite so far:

ok, Honda is the evil empire, but a 1, 2, 3 finish would be pretty cool. (edit: guess top-three is done with Mr Cornejo‘s withdrawal. : |)

will be fun to root for Mr Howes ... :toothless:angel

go Mr Brabec and team Honda, USA! :flag

You guys are nuts..... I can't imagine completing this rally! Get the funds together for a team and I'll drive the motorhome to each biovac! :teeth

yes, agree, look at how long some of the Dakar stages are and how folks struggle to finish after dark, and I’m like no way ... :facepalm

you have to admit the Classics class is interesting, especially if they add motos someday.
I could do at least as well as the gentlemen campaigning the Peugeot pick-up truck, maybe, god bless them. :x

there’s a campfire crew I’m not worthy of ... :hail

f#$k it, I may simply go one year to spectate. follow some desert tracks of my hero, Mr Lawrence. :party

would be super-cool to see some of you BARF Baja guys get into the roadbook stuff. I used to have fun meeting Bicycle Phil and the Rally Pan Am crew in places like Pahrump and Bridgeport when they were training and hang out around their campfire, and ride out to watch them on their crazy CA roadbook training stages.

Mr HogWild, of Harley-Davidson Dakar Rally side-hack and Sonora Rally fame, used to put the CA roadbook training routes together ... insane amount of work, back in the early 2000s. Hear the tech has caught up and they are much easier to make, nowadays. :dunno

fun to think about ... :ride
