You guys suck. Now I want to go out and shoot my Martin Onza 3 but with it being so hot and humid right now I am thinking no way Jose. Also got to get the girls back out there with me it has been some moons since we shot our bows.

For those that want a compound and are just starting out check out the Diamond archery Infinite Edge. it can go from like ~15lbs to 60 or so lbs of draw weight so it will grow with you for a while it is what my daughters shoot.

Shot recurve for days when I was young but once I got a compound bow I have never gone back. Can't hit an 80yd target reliably with a recurve.

Also heard they closed the Mt. Madonna range I was saddened by that as I had too many fond memories of losing arrows there. Almost cried when I lost my first aluminum arrow there in the 90s I had spent all my graduation money on those arrows and couldn't afford to get more.

It's still there AFAIK. What happened was somebody at County Parks had an agenda to remove the Mt. Madonna Bowmen's association with the range (MMB had managed and maintained the range for years in return for free access). Of course county parks employees have no freaking clue on how to run an archery range so last I heard the range was pretty much in neglect and a portion of the field targets were removed for "safety reasons".

Didn't like shooting there myself because you get swarmed by gnats and mosquitoes the moment you step out of your vehicle.

Purchased a Martin Jaguar Elite recurve a couple of summers ago... was planning on practicing and training with it to be ready to go hunting this year. Alas, health and injury issues forced me to put it on the shelf. Just last week I took it out to see where I am strength wise and could hardly pull 40# draw. <sigh> I am hoping my recovery comes around quickly as I am in love with that bow.

Sorry to threadjack... just seeing an archery thread got me excited for the hobby again. :)
You'll heal, turn it down as low as you can and do your physical therapy. Let them know what you want to do. And no apology necessary, I don't mind the thread jack especially when it's to help others:kiss
Threadjack is my fault, as Dar and I run in a certain amount of Heaven and Hell synchronicity, this is also an interest for me. Sorry to hear you can't do what you want right now, just keep at it, you'll get back!!
Ying to my yang :laughing I'm stoked the thread is giving you good info.

I got all my girls in on it too but they won't hunt with me. My boys do though. Get out there :laughing freaking arrows are expensive, a half dozen cost me 100. Carbon fiber

When it was maintained it was the best place to shoot. I don't ever remember having a hard time with bugs there but I may be viewing it through the rose-colored glasses of memory though. It was just plain awesome and just like hunting with uphill and downhill targets and just being in the woods while shooting was nice.

A car in space...hmmmm.
I made a recurve from PVC. Works great! Directions on youtube...

YES! I went down a YT PVC bow rabbit hole a couple of weeks ago with my nephew lol. Who woulda thought making them could be so much friggin fun

He was in town hanging with me for a couple of weeks for the summer and we wanted to do some shooting so we busted out a couple of pieces of spare PVC I had laying in the garage and the heat gun.

We made one really simple bow thats just a piece of PVC with three fiberglass rods shoved in the middle lol I slapped a whisker biscuit on it and used some paracord for the string and its pretty dang fun to shoot.

I also made a take down style recurve with flat limbs that I pressed out with the heat gun. I had some T sections and elbows laying around and my nephew was watching First Blood II and wanted to carry his arrows on the bow so I made a carrier while he was sleeping :rofl

Then my OCD kicked in once my nephew left for home and I went a little overboard and made myself a Mongolian style horse bow. It took a couple of tries to get it exactly how I wanted but it Turned out pretty dang good. Its a legit 40 to 45lb draw.

But I am looking to get a legit take down style recurve so thanks to you guys I'll be researching all the recommendations in the thread lol but I'm definitely hooked on making them now

^^^ That is really cool! Wish I could make stuff like that! I try to get crafty and I end up with my ear glued to my shoulder :laughing

Do you harvest Pig with a Bow?

I hunt them with the bow but this is California and I haven't gotten one yet here. Most of the boar here are on Indian land or on guide only land. I refuse to pay a guide :laughing I haven't got a deer either! Public land is so small and difficult to get to. I got a turkey though! :laughing I miss Arizona, never got skunked there :cry

So back to sights... :laughing Garmin is having a sale on their Xero A1 ,I bought it for my husband and I will take his Black Gold Ascent Whitetail 3 pin sight that he currently has. But because the Garmin is 699 he feels bad and told me I had to get my gun I wanted! I totally win! So from Sights to Recurves to now Glock 19 :laughing This thread is awesome :laughing

I feel the skunkiness on the hunting. I haven't gotten lucky at all here in the Bayou State. But this year hopefully it will change as my cousin invited me to hunt on some private land his GF has up in north LA and they see a ton of deer there so maybe dry spell will end.

Congrats on the new to you sight and the Glock(I guess):laughing I am an M&P man myself.

Another direction for this thread...I'm leaving to Idaho in about 5 hours for my 10th annual archery elk hunt. 10 days away from CA and work will make me happy. Any of you have out of state hunts planned?

I am in the process of joining an Archery Club, but I am more interested in recurve. Good luck!

Recurves are weak sauce. You get superior arrow speed, letoff with a compound. Those are BIG things.

Also make sure you get the right size.

If you do go recurve, make sure you get something with a pull you can manage. Even guys that are pretty strong will have difficulty managing a 60lb draw on a recurve, let alone a compound.

Whats the draw length range on it? Don't piece it out, you'll get more if you leave the sight on it.

Key is consistency, take notes on your phone exactly where you are anchoring your knuckle, where it is touching your mouth and nose. How you are standing. Do the same steps over and over until you are constant. If the groupings are within a hand print you are good. :) Have someone film you a couple of times so you notice where your anchor points are.

So for me my knuckle is on my earlobe, the string is against the corner of my mouth. My nose is small so I don't touch it :laughing I breathe out and fire. Same movements the same way every single time. You will get there. :kiss

All excellent advice.
Also add, make sure you have the right draw length. Too short or too long will make your anchor point vary, which is a bad thing.

Also consider a nice release. Better to learn how to use one from the beginning. Much smoother release of the arrow than with tabs. You will be able to visualize the difference. No more arrow wag.

Yes, Elk hunting in Arizona but as a spotter/tracker not a hunter. I can't afford the out of state license!

Weak sauce? Takes more strength to shoot a recurve :laughing I think they are a blast for fun and for competition, my daughter shoots a recurve. :p

Recurves are a pain in the ass to shoot. :laughing

Recurves can certainly be as fun to shoot for anyone. Just like Harleys. If you want that Harley experience, please have at it. If you want a fast, light, reliable, efficient bike, get yourself sportbike.

If Eldirty wants to get gud and hunt, the fastest way to do so is with a compound.

I have shot all types of bows from regular bows, recurves to some of the newer compound bows. They each have their place in my heart.

Regular bows and recurves take some skill to shoot but it can be done and be done well. I could hit a phone book with my recurve with no sights at about 40 yards all day when I was doing it all the time and shooting fingers.

Compound bows are easier to shoot well as long as you are consistent and are more forgiving when taking your time to line up a shot. My first compound had a 40% let off and it was tiring to hold it and line up a shot. My newer bow has like 60 or 70 and I can hold that shit all day and not break a sweat it was amazing the first time I pulled it back.

Lots of guys here in the swamps are going traditional bowhunting and are doing well it just takes time, practice and waiting for the right shot.

Just buy a Samick Sage dude, like Kestrel said. Simple, cheap, upgradeable.

I started with just a Samick Sage with #25 limbs. Then added a #35 and #50 limbs. Then I bought a LH riser and now I'm learning how to shoot all over again left-handed. I'm keeping the RH riser to loan out to people.

I love the precision of compound but there's something beautiful in the pure and simple recurve. I'd probably never hunt with recurve because I'm just not accurate enough with it for it to be ethical.

Well, I ordered a 35# Samick Sage, some crap target arrows, cheap quiver, arm guard and shooting glove. We'll see how it goes. I appreciate the advice, gang.

If I want a LIGHT bow, it sure as hell isn't a compound :rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl

Really. They're heavy as hell compared to a one piece laminated wood recurve. Not to mention a compound is cold as hell to hold onto for hours when you're hunting in cold weather.

Awesome.

Yes, a compound is more accurate. Yes, the arrow speed is so much higher... And yes, it's dramatically easier to shoot well at a distance... But this isn't Harley vs. Sportbike so much as apples to oranges. They are totally different shooting experiences, and a totally different hunting experience. Shooting a compound with modern tech and releases is gun-like in a lot of respects. Very mechanical in all aspects of the process. An old school recurve is a totally different shooting experience.

If I want to slaughter deer and hit my season limit, I'll take the compound. If I want the challenge of killing something at 10-15 yards, I'll take the recurve. It's much, much harder to kill something with a recurve.

Well, didn’t get an elk but did see a crapload of moose, which isn’t really a surprise we see them all the time.
