China quarantines city of 18 million to try to contain virus

It's as if I wrote one thing and you read another.

Try it this way.

The world went loopy about SARS, and there were just over 8000 cases of it. Compared to the annual flu outbreaksx that is a drop in the ocean.

Though SARS did infect people outside of China, I didn't personally encounter anyone who suffered from it. No surprise considering what a tiny fraction 8,000 is of 8 Billion people.

Put another way, SARS was contained.

The same hype is here for this Corona virus. Will it exceed 8000 cases? Maybe. Will it directly affect any of us here? Odds are nope. Yes it is in America already, but how many of us know any of the current victims..
The beauty of the internet is that things stay around.

Thoughts on this virus now? :laughing

It's only showing about 2.5 times more infectious and 10 times more deadly than seasonal flu. Just guesses.

I think the denominator will get larger later and the % death will go down. It seems to be so similar to the flu that people may have had it and not known. They are only counting cases that have tested positive and they are only really testing those that have reason to be tested like travel or contact with those that travel. Once testing becomes more prevalent I think total number of cases will go way up.

So the WHO said that Europe is now the epicenter of the epidemic as Europe is reporting more cases than China did when it was happening there.

Anyone else think this is more due to China's withholding/manipulating of pertinent facts and information rather than Europe not trying to contain it better? I mean Wuhan has a pop of 11.8 million people and there are only ~143K cases reported worldwide? It seems seriously skewed to me.

It definitely could be. I mean, why doesn't the US have vastly more cases reported? Not because we're healthier. Because we aren't testing for it!

Well, China had a huge jump in cases around mid-feb and around that time they announced changes to how they will diagnose, and then the growth curve went flat.

I don't trust any info coming from the Chinese government.

Me either that is why I think the mortality rate is going to be lower than the current 6-10% they are showing. I don't think we really have a grasp on exactly how many are infected and either didn't show it or thought it was a cold.

What really sucks is I have seasonal allergies and the other night my head was feeling congested and I had to tell myself it was just allergy onset and not a virus because I have not come in contact with anyone from overseas. Still messes with the mind with this 24-hour doom and gloom cycle we are in.

Similar to the flu yet running out of ventilators. Something is different.

Not sure about running out of ventilators but that is only for severe cases. how many mild cases have there been that we have not caught the same thing happens for the flu. you get mild symptoms you stay home to ride it out and you are fine.

Me neither. Started there, probably way before they admitted to it and I bet ten hobo bux the number infected there is grossly higher than reported.

Xi patting himself on the back like a mofo. Something Whinnie the Pooh would never do.

Patting himself on the back for handling a situation their poor hygiene caused.
