China locking down cities with 18 million to stop virus
BEIJING (AP) — Chinese authorities Thursday moved to lock down three cities with a combined population of more than 18 million in an unprecedented effort to contain the deadly new virus that has sickened hundreds of people and spread to other parts of the world during the busy Lunar New Year travel period.

The open-ended lockdowns are unmatched in size, embracing more people than New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago put together.

The train station and airport in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, were shut down, and ferry, subway and bus service was halted. Normally bustling streets, shopping malls, restaurants and other public spaces in the city of 11 million were eerily quiet. Police checked all incoming vehicles but did not close off the roads.

Authorities announced similar measures would take effect Friday in the nearby cities of Huanggang and Ezhou. In Huanggang, theaters, internet cafes and other entertainment centers were also ordered closed.

In the capital, Beijing, officials canceled “major events" indefinitely, including traditional temple fairs that are a staple of holiday celebrations, in order to “execute epidemic prevention and control.” The Forbidden City, the palace complex in Beijing that is now a museum, announced it will close indefinitely on Saturday.

Seventeen people have died in the outbreak, all of them in and around Wuhan. Close to 600 have been infected, the vast majority of them in Wuhan, and many countries have begun screening travelers from China for symptoms of the virus, which can cause fever, coughing, trouble breathing and pneumonia.
It's inevitable that the virus eventually makes it here, there has already been one case in Seattle from somebody returning from China.

Anybody know more on this?

Lots of things happening quickly there.

I know it's not that funny, but the Chinese health official who was telling everyone to calm down and that it's not that bad eventually got the Wuhan Coronavirus himself.

This virus also has "super spreaders". One guy managed to infect 13 people in a hospital before they figured out he had the coronavirus.

Incubation period is over a week, IIRC, so I imagine it'll only get bigger.

The timing of this virus is interesting.

I'm curious if China will deploy its military to Hong Kong for "quarantine measures".

We haven't heard a ton about this virus, up to now. The first I heard about it was when there was a case discovered in Seattle.

I get the feeling that it's going to hit this country hard, especially if mrzuzzo is correct and it has a 1 week incubation period. The only think that kept ebola from killing far more people was it's short incubation period.

I'm not worried. The Chinese officials have this well under control. Return to your assigned tasks, and your supervisor will notify you of any status changes. Please do not discuss this, as it will spread panic.

Copypasta from the EU CDC:

A media statement by a senior expert in China suggests that the mean incubation period observed in the current outbreak is seven days, with a range between 2–12 [37]. Based on the epidemiological haracteristics of respiratory infections caused by SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, an incubation period of two to seven days and up to 14 days is plausible.

Thanks for the clarification! :thumbup

Yeah, this one is going to spread. That is a very long incubation period, which gives infected people plenty of time to travel quite a distance before showing signs, it will also make it really difficult to figure out where they got infected.

I should also mention that CNY is on Saturday. This time period is the worlds largest human migration. Just imagine all of NYC being shut down the week before Christmas. The travel alone is a giant clusterfuck, but with the whole country moving around this virus can exponentially spread within the next week or two.

Eschew Obfuscation
I am in China right now. Suzhou to be exact, which is about 700km from Wuhan. Right next door by China standards. :laughing

Things are... interesting here. I'm here on a consulting gig for a company that has several plants as well as offices in the nearby area. Most of the sites were to have pretty much shut down for the Chinese New Year holiday yesterday anyhow, but chose to do so early on Tuesday.

The sites were to have kept a small number of people there and our plan was to work through the holiday to take advantage of the idle production lines in order to upgrade systems. All that is pretty much out the window as the sites we were working on have gone into total lockdown and sent people home. Moving flights out up since we've now got nothing to do for the next week is proving difficult as it looks like quite a few are trying to get out of Dodge all at the same time.

Not only is the CNY the biggest travel season here, there are normally large fireworks or other gatherings. Which I understand they've cancelled in Wuhan, but not yet here. Though I do expect they will. Streets and shopping areas are ghost towns and everyone is wearing masks. In the grand scheme of things the number affected aren't really that great at this point and it really seems like a tempest in a teapot. We'll see.
