Do You Road Bike?

the SIS shifter housing suggestion is intriguing, as well

NOOOO,,, don't use SIS housing for brake, the concept is the same but the construction is totally different and it WILL fail leaving you with no brakes. Compressionless brake housing begins construction like SIS (Shimano brand) shift housing, but then is reinforced to hold it together under hard compressive forces where shift housing will literally blow apart and collapse. You want actual brake housing that's construction is compressionless. SRAM, Jagwire and Yokozuna all make good replaceable kits. If you want to spend a little more then you can do a segmented kit with replaceable liner (like Nokon) for a real tricked out custom setup that works amazingly well.

Someone mentioned carbon brakes and modulation, play around with pad choice more. My rim brake carbon wheels are better than my HED C2s for power and modulation. Compressionless housing is good for rim brakes too FYI. Pad choice for me is SwissStop Black Prince.

whew!
thx for the invaluable correction, I reread post & it sez “compressionless”, so my bad memory

speaking as an OG who’s also weak & slow,
OLH doesn’t ‘t freak me out like Tunitas does

Tunitas has less traffic thought.

Man today's wind was brutal. They actually cancelled the race by Livermore. I and teammate decided to do a loop or Patterson pass instead, and turrned around part way. We were being blown sideways.

Although have to say maybe there is something to Zipp marketing about dimples. With my 404 yes I was blown around, but it was predictable. Versus with other deep dish wheels the front end would get super squerrely.

Speaking of fancy segmented housing. I have it on my front brake and I think it made a difference. Although can't really use it for rear because housing needs to run all the way back.

You can use it on the rear, you'd just need a few kits to make the run. Nokon used to sell extension kits just for this. It makes a pretty big difference provided the rest of the group is up to snuff. Throw it on cheap tektros, promaxs or OE brakes and the calipers themselves will still flex leaving squishy feeling.
My setup is DA9100 levers, Nokon housing, EE Cycleworks (pre-Cane Creek) brakes on CLX 32 hoops. My commuter (don't laugh) has 303s, they would have been a little rough today. The 32s were fine in all but the worst of it today.

I find OLH weekday traffic to be tolerable

RE: wind - Tuono Joice & I were out on Patt Pass & Altamont Pass roads yesterday on an old folks 35-mi loop - my new(!) Wilier Cento1 sports 35mm-high rims & it was pretty flustered by both 90-degree & even 45-degree cross winds that were much less extreme than today’s

Hmm. I mainly think there is too much drag. At least on the ones I got.

On side note is Nokon is still around? Seems like everyone is out except wiggles. Their site is still shit and looks like was designed in 90s.

Good question, and I'm not sure, website is still up, but it's hard to look at.
Jagwire makes a nice kit, along with Alligator. I've been using my Nokon kit for about 6 years now. I bought a 5m roll of liner for re-cabling and probably won't run out for another 6 years. For drag, it can be tricky to get it setup perfectly but it is do-able.

Once I'm done with grad school I want to try bike packing a try. I purchased a Surly Long Haul Trucker with 26" wheels and that's as far as I've gotten lol. I figure this would be a slow build for me because N+1. lol

Edit: I signed up for the Chico Wildcat 125 this April if anyone is interested in joining a slow guy!

I've thought about it, but it's a matter of finding the time. I don't get to ride any of my bikes as much as I'd like. My rain bike is built on a Niner RLT 9 frameset so it would be ideal for that application. As it is, it's still my do-anything bike and I've had it all over the mountains along the coast between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz, lots of day trips.

you should join the uc merced cycling team! I was on the sac state team and the merced event was always awesome. For the road race I had my best result in my entire college racing career. I did dogshit in the crit tho and one of my teammates crashed out and broke his cheekbone.

It's funny that you mention the UCM cycling team. That didn't exist when I was attending there. I graduated back in 2010 years before that club got started and I started cycling :( But now I just ride for fun and the occasional charity ride like Chico

Went to support my teammate in a two day Stage race. Ended up winning RR on the last day and placing top 5 in GC. Didn't even think it was possible since I was mid pack heading in to RR. So didn't stick around for podiums GC podiums.

Crossing the finish line was surreal. I was basically in solo breakaway for 14 miles. At one point had a minute on a pack, and crossed 5 seconds a head. All by myself, looking back to make sure, and rolling through. Then promptly getting off the bike, collapsing, almost passing out, puking and hard time breathing. lol

Has anyone here used Seasucker racks? I've heard some good things about them and I like the idea of not having to install bars on my car for it.

Also, my bike developed a problem. I have SRAM Force double tap shifters, and I am simply unable to switch to the large sprocket any more. It seems like the front derailler (also SRAM Force) just doesn't move far enough to switch my chain to the large sprocket.

In this case, is there an outer limit adjustment somewhere? What the hell do I adjust?

My buddy uses seasuckers on his porsche and he hasn't had any problems with it. He is also a "once a month" rider so it's not under heavy use. ymmv
