Never did find the Metcalf folks on FB. Was there on Monday after the recent enduro but didn't see anyone. May try to hit it up on Thur or Friday of this week if I don't run off somewhere to do some trails.

If anyone has contact info for those folks sure would appreciate a share. I don't do Facebook at all and its a bit of a drive to Metcal from current location around Hollister.

thx

Well this Spooky was wild; mellow winds and mid 70's on Saturday. Sections were on the easier side (although I checked both days) but still a challenge. Sunday was a different world: winds were 40 mph constantly with dust and grit pounding you. Wind was blowing people off balance on my section which had a 10 ft log, 2ft high you had to get up on from the end and ride the full length or get a 5.

Event got called after two loops due to checkers suffering in the 4x4 area; too much dust and debris in the air for them to hang on for 5 hrs. On the way home the Carquinas was closed due to fire, 580 was necked down to 2 lanes due to fire and our power at the house has been out since Saturday. Felt glad to make it home and just hang out by candle light, make an early dinner and go to sleep.

Just looked at scores and congrats Mark, looks like you took 1st in ADV B for the year! Barely got by Scott G but it looks like you got by him for the win. Neither of you were riding like your normal selves yesterday as you both struggled on that log but Mark held it together. You eeked out the win by 4 points or so (out of 140)?!

Will try to get up to Schaad for a day of the work party but have a kid's B-day that weekend so may not make it. Next year will have a solid fight for ADV-B especially if Mark moves up to EXP...and now that Kevin M has moved into ADV it's just like INT was a couple of years ago with all the same players. Can't wait!

Sid, I got all the club stuff we need to set Saturday at Copper and have all the same stuff for Adrian for Sunday. We have to connect soon so I can hand it off to you and you can get it to them, April is just around the corner!

If you want me to make a post for that group asking what days/when they go out, just let me know.

Luke, that was a wild trial for sure!! I had to close my eyes in one sandy section in the 4x4 area it was that bad. I was always on a clean until I got to that damn log in your section LOL. Went back and made it pass the gate but took my about 4 tries.

Thx, I'm really happy I pulled out the overall for the year! Could have clinched it by checking yesterday but that wouldn't have felt right. Too bad they called the event early, I had a 6 point lead on Grosser but we both got 12's on 2nd loop so it would have been close. I'm moving to ADV A, no way I'm ready for some of the scary expert stuff. It was a very technical trial but the one with the closest terrain to Carnegie so it usually suits me well.

I'm also doing the work party at Schaad but not sure what day yet. Probably see you guys up there!

Awesome and congrats Mark, well done. Yeah Luke, we'll see each other soon I'm sure, I can get that stuff then. We were up at the property grading and clearing more of the roads and cutting down some trees that fell. Bought a quad a honda 4x4 to do some of the work for me, and a chain harrow to help clear the grass and maintain the roads. Looking forward to next year hopefully ride a lot more events.

You are pretty much guaranteed to run into the core group of Metcalf trials riders every Saturday morning at 8:30AM — myself plus two other guys. We usually warm up with cones doing super tight turns on the hill near the beginners area. Then we setup an intermediate level section with tape either at the trials area next to the parking lot or occasionally way out back at the rocks by the fence line. If you meet up we will happy give you our phone numbers and we usually checkin with each other via text on Friday.

Hey Micah, what trials bicycle do you have again? I picked up a used 26" Inspired Hex few weeks ago. Have only been on it for about an hour but looking forward to riding it more now that the PITS season is over.

Man it is a lot tougher than I thought it would be!

Watch out for the pedals, Mark. I have to wear more armor when riding the bike than the moto....gashed my shin really well one time (almost to the bone) just goofing around. They are super easy to hop and turn though, I can get 90 rotation barely trying on the pedal bike, I have to work to get that on the moto.

Didn't know you had one Luke, awesome! Yeah I think the Gform knee/shin guards I have will have enough coverage for my shin. Can only imagine how bad that would hurt with no pad.

I think it will help for sure on bunnyhop type moves and clearing gaps when needed on the moto. Plus you obviously really have to use your body versus having a moto to help u up things.

With 1/2 carnegie unusable and way environmentalists are attacking us, thought it would be fun sport to get into now. There are some great natural and street trials stuff in parks right near by house and work. Can't wait until I'm good enough to ride that type of stuff.

Much of the stuff on a bike doesn't transfer over but some does. Was able to get the first feeling of rear wheel hop on the bicycle (stand on the rear and hop on it), now just starting to feel that on the moto.
Having to power with the pedals changes things quite a bit, if you're not in the right spot you're dead in the water. If you just balance and hop it is pretty similar but way easier. Good for figuring out body mechanics to do things.

Rad!!!! I have a 26” Czar Neuron which is nearly the same as a Hex. I think you made a really good choice. I love my bike and ride it almost everyday. Some things are easier (like moving the front and rear around and hopping) other things are harder like getting up stuff without a motor and kinda generally less stable then the moto. I am super down to ride with you or anyone else on the bicycle. Believe it or not I’ve never ridden with another trials bicycle rider and think it would be fun and motivating. You have my number right?

I’m pretty good at doing a stationary rear wheel hop on the bicycle (can do 10+ hops). Still working out hopping up things — I can just about hop up a curb and hold it — though I can bunny hop to rear maybe 18” but not really hold it. With the moto I still can’t work out the balance point for a stationary hop — I can wheelie sorta alright though... any pointers?

Sid, FYI I’ve gotta 26” Echo Mk.6 comp bike and a 24” Inspired Arcade street bike I’m looking to get rid of. Text me if you’re interested. You can even just borrow one for awhile to see if it’s the type of bike you like.

Cracking me up Sid! I wouldn't have gotten a bicycle if I had my own land to ride the moto like you :) Get the full size moto first so we can do some hard enduro type riding lol.

Micah, I don't have your phone...PM me. I'm in livermore and might be a little while before I'm good enough to hit anything more than a curb. Really enjoy watching Ali Clarkson's Vlogs on youtube. He has a really smooth style.

Riding All The Time
Biketrials riders on the barf? Awesome!
(it's the sport that took me away from mototrials for a while. A very long while)
If anybody wants to ride with me in Santa Cruz, let me know. The harbor is an awesome place to ride.

I will probably take you up on that offer at some point but need to get the basics down first. Think I'm struggling to get my weight far enough back as the front doesn't seem to come up very easily. Going to setup a camera from the side which I hope will help figure out why I can't manual, etc.

Are you trying to manual or rear wheel hop?

I think holding a manual is crazy hard -- but to get the front up for a manual is pretty easy: drop but down to compress tires and then sharp body back - these are separate moves -- *NOT* a diagonal down-back -- you want to be really really low and arms straight -- it's all body *NO* arms. You should be really really lizard brain reactive with your rear brake -- though I just saw a YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cUTakfZT00) that recommends that you forget about the rear brake and learn to bail off the back -- just started practicing bailing off the back yesterday and it's kinda sketchy -- I'm pretty lizard brain with the rear brake though (maybe too lizard brain).

For doing rear wheel hops to get the front up there are at least two options: 1. get on both brakes and rock forward slightly and then back. 2. Do a sharp pedal up and catch yourself on the rear brake. Option 1 is the easiest to start out with but Option 2 is better to learn in the long run so I would quickly move from or even skip Option 1. I've been practicing this for over a year riding daily at the local skatepark -- getting up took a couple of weeks, learning to do more then a few hops took most of the year -- I just "got it" about a month ago -- now I'm trying to learn to hop up onto things from the rear wheel which I thought would come easy after I was able to hop on the rear almost indefinitely -- but so far not so much. Some tips: *STAY RELAXED* cannot emphasis that enough. It's all body and legs/calves -- if you find that your arms are strained you are doing it wrong. I find it easier to *NOT* get the front up too high but get back super far with a low front -- though when you start getting comfortable it's actually easier to have the bars close to your chest and the bike standing tall (but just forget I said that because I spent a *LONG* time trying to get that and if I did the low front end I would have probably picked it up faster). There is the whole pedal kick thing that kinda helps you stay in place or adjust your position, but initially you may want to forget about that and just hop backwards or control your hop with your body -- I insisted on using the pedal kick and that is probably another reason it took me such a long time.

Anyways, excuse the long rambling post. I'm really loving bicycle trials (and moto trials) but I have pretty much never ridden or barely even talked to anyone about it so I'm getting a little excited I guess. I think it would be super fun to get a bunch of the moto trials folks and do a bicycle trials meetup. I've got extra trials bikes for the curious -- though I set my brakes up moto style (rear brake on the left).

I've got to start trying new places because I'm finding I'm really good with the features I ride daily but I go to someplace new I can't even do the basics. Would be super rad to get a group ride!

Thanks for the tips Michah! I've been trying both actually and glad you feel holding the manual is tough because I thought it was just me :)

Would love to have a bicycle trials meet up. I joined the FB group for SF trials riders but no one really posts on that group. Ultimately my goal is to be able to ride natural terrain versus street trials but I need to get basics down before spend time out in regional parks playing on rocks. There is a nice natural rock place in a city park right by my work so that will be where I'll go first.

I too switched my levers to motostyle as well. I'm pretty stoked on getting into it as well since I don't have a backyard to play around in on the moto. Plus it's great exercise!
