Broken Humerus: not so funny actually

I'm experiencing a bit of pain in my forearm that I think might be related to muscle atrophy. Does anyone know how long it takes for that to set in?

I broke my humerus at the elbow end a couple years ago and the surgeries really mucked with my ulnar nerve. The part of your hand you DIDN'T write on was completely numb for a while, then slowly came back. But it came in stages, which included some tingling, then what I best describe as a bad sunburn, then finally settling in at a bit of lingering numbness. For a while there was some pretty good pain, but about the only treatment for it was anti-depressants, which I wasn't interested in. Luckily, it got through that stage.

It'll take a long time. One of the specialists said to figure about 1mm per day from the injury site to restore normal nerve function. From my elbow to my fingertips measured about 6 months worth of millimeters, which is how long it took me.

We were a little worried about the muscle atrophying while the nerves weren't working, so at one point I was prescribed an electronic stimulation thingy to fire them via electrodes. Kinda freaky but we avoided permanent damage. But no pain.

The sum of medical science on nerves seems to be:

- They're weird and no one knows how they work.
- When they're jacked up, they take a long time to recover.

Good luck with your rehab! And enjoy getting asked about airport metal detectors for the rest of your life.

It's already setting in, don't wait for it to set in more.

I've had surgery on both of my knees and, good lord, the pain from a bad knee and atrophy is nearly overwhelming.

The right knee surgery one was super painful; I took every pill the doctor gave me and listened to his every word; it took damn near a year or more to totally heal up, what an evil stupid process.

A year later the same thing happened to my left knee, splat-it blew out; this time I took no narcotic based pain pills at all. I also walked on the knee immediately after surgery and wouldn't you know it; I don't remember how long it took to heal because I was walking on it right off the operating table.

I also didn't have to do 'therapy' because I never stopped using my leg. ;)

It's painful to use it right away but It's hella more painful to have to work your limb back to where it was. So, take your pick.. Fuck those pain pills, I'll drink a beer and take an ibuprofin.

That's hardcore. I'm with you on the pain meds though. I like to feel whats going on in my body, the human body is an amazing thing and the less we mess with it the better. At this point I only take anything at night to help me sleep; I can't sleep at all otherwise. I went off all meds for almost a week and it was just completely miserable.

Oh I'm getting back on a dirt bike. Even if it's just taking the klr around fort ord. Life's to short to spend it being traumatized, and there's too much fun to be had :)

Although I was thinking about picking up music again since there's less bone breaking involved lol. I need to have my sax repadded though.

Good luck for a full recovery. :)

Thanks! I'm a little better all the time. I started taking my arm out of the sling today for a little bit, longer than just to move my forearm. It feels weird, like I have an extra limb, but I can tell its getting better.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

Ugh, I broke my humerus right in the middle, snowboarding. I was also riding above my limit. Lesson learned!

Big bones sheared in two make for some gnarly x-rays. Hopefully the feeling is continuing to come back.

Nerves repair at 1mm a day, so just a little damage may take a long time to recover completely, however usually they do - so keep positive.

Bummer! I'm learning that a broken humorous is a lot more common than I thought. I'm happy to report that I get more feeling, strength and dexterity back in my hand all the time. But I'm really grateful for all the kind words because I was pretty upset that first week when it seemed like there was no improvement.
