Broken Humerus: not so funny actually

I found out on Monday that motocross is a lot different from street riding. I've done street riding for years but it was my first time in the dirt so I didn't have a clue and all I wanted was to be faster than the 8 year olds who were hosing me on the track. I wish I could blame my accident on a drunk driver or something but it was just me trying to go fast and look cool because I'm an idiot.

I don't know exactly what happened. I'm curious to find someone who was there at Fouroeight mx who might have seen it go down. I remember a jump with a turn right after it and I just didn't make the turn. I remember a snapping sound when I fell and then frantically dragging myself off the track and screaming for help. I lost consciousness once for sure; my boyfriend was helping me into the truck and the next thing I knew I was on the ground feeling like I was waking from a very long, pleasant dream where everything was great and I couldn't believe I was still at the track.

the nurse described it this way: "Think of an ice cream cone with the top fallen off."

Following surgery the biggest thing bothering me is I've had limited movement/sensation in my hand. the doc says he "thinks" it will come back. Does anyone here have knowledge or advice about nerve damage like this?

I want to thank all the barfers who have been so supportive. Bryan (Auntiebling) who gave me an ice machine; I've been using it and its wonderful. Snapper who brought it down and visited with us even though her water heater was having a meltdown. Punter who stayed with me in the hospital and wouldn't stop making me laugh because he's a bastard. Fitnesscoach who took me for a pedicure. And of course Kyle (oceansides), who is just amazing.

Back in 1999 I shattered my Humerus after getting run over by the pack at the start of an AFM race. 7 surgeries, lots of plates and screws and a chunk of hip bone moved to my arm and I was back racing in about a year and a half.

Following my accident, I lost all use of my hand for quite some time. Severe damage to the radial nerve was the cause. I now always have a tingling in my hand and the dexterity is not 100%. For sure what you are experiencing is normal and it will get better. But never damage takes a LONG time to heal.

wow that sucks. I'm glad mine broke off in basically one piece I know it could have been a lot worse. I have a plate too. Long time to heal is ok with me as long as I have something to look forward too. Thanks for the encouragement :):)

The only first hand experience I have with nerve damage is prolonged effects from a bad nerve pinch, not from trauma where the nerve may have been cut. Even in my cases, the healing process has been slow. It's frustrating and can be scary (I just about said unnerving :facepalm)

Oddly enough, a neighbor of ours had her humerus broken in an arm wrestling contest over the 4th of July. She too experienced nerve damage and is still feeling the effects. Every case is different, however.

I'm sorry you're going through this.

I make words too.
Follow the advice of your shirt and stuff like this would not happen. :twofinger

I broke my humerus into three tidy parts (two surgeries to repair about 2 years apart) and had a little numbing for a couple months. It came back with rehab over the course of a couple months of the first operation.

The reason for the second operation was the first surgeon and his fischer-price "My first surgery kit" was afraid of cutting a nerve so he used what the second doctor called "old fart" tactics to repair. One non-union fracture didn't heal until after the second operation. I played golf with it...

Happy healing!

My doc is like a million years old, pants pulled up to armpits, and he's the grumpiest person I've ever met. When I first met him he walked into the room, turned his back to me and in a scruffy old voice said "Well I dont like this fracture at all." I almost blurted out "well I dont like it either!" but some angry old people have this way about them you just know it's better not to give them any lip.

but they say he has a gift with orthopedics and no one is a surgeon that long if they're no good, or so I'm assuming.

:laughing That would have been great. Other possibilities:

"Sorry. I did my best."

"Oh, I don't know, it's kinda growing on me."

"What kind do you like?"

"Here's half a BARF salute."

haha those are great! I'll remember them for next time :p picking one is going to be hard though and it would just be weird to say them all.

Loves the anecdotal
When I first started riding motor-x I asked a bunch of guy how to ride the woops sections; they all started pulling their shirts over to show me their shoulder injuries..

Heal up soon.. that has to F-in hurt! I've broken both of my collar bones(ass over tea kettle wreck) and they stick out like frankenstine now; it didn't hurt that bad but I knew something was broke.

You've joined a fraternity.. Now you can show you scars to noobz.. :laughing

Still havent seen mine yet. Hoping doc will take the bandage off when I see him tomorrow. He said it wouldn't scar too badly and I was sad. I'm hoping for a giant effing scar after going through all this lol.

Ouch! heal up n back in the saddle! :thumbup
that x-ray is :wow

Thanks for the encouraging word! Kyle and I rode two up on my tiny rebel 250 this evening just around the neighborhood and it was fun. I wore his oversized moto hoodie because I could zip it up with my giant arm sling contraption inside. So we rode, 250 groaning sadly under the weight of us, my left hand up over his shoulder (almost in a weirdly loving type of choke hold), right sleeve flapping in the wind, giant smile on my face. Too cool for school.

I crashed naked, and all I got was a scraped elbow and knee. :x
