Those *!@$#*%!! Trackmasters are not the right tire for Baja-Parker Desert ITs = 0 flats.

We're talking about resurecting the ATKs, they really are the correct bike for Baja-old sit down, ass sliding, sleds of yesteryear.
:cool

Tres Tubos.... the famous Bola tube changer. If he can't get it right the first time, he can try a second. But the third tube is usually the charm. :twofinger

Better watch it Cpt Forkseal. Tres tubos might challenge you to a tube change race. And for the record while accept the name I haven’t pinched even uno tubo since that fateful day in the desert. :laughing

Oh and I think reb was “baitfish” and Hank was “guppie”. Leo has to be “red snapper”.

Daniel learned me the 12 o'clock rule for avoiding pinched tubes at Los Vientos ... :gsxrgrl

now all I need is more flat-fixin' practice ... :facepalm

Captain Forkseal, hee ... :toothless

3 weeks later...

Baja day 6: Some of the guys had stayed up playing pool and drinking…CJ took lead on the latter task and the morning after was a rough one. We broke into groups based on skill (and readiness) and I ended up riding with Tom, CJ, and Daniel. We knew there was a track near the motel to the main trail but kept getting turned around trying various tracks that didn’t actually take us where we wanted to go. I was getting frustrated, I’ll admit. I reminded myself I was the one who pushed to explore the great unknown Baja del Norte 😜 Tom eventually got us on the right path and off we went.

The trail was super awesome, a lot of varied terrain. The four of us rode for a couple hours and then bailed to the main highway as CJ’s bike was having issues and we didn’t have enough daylight to finish the trail. I was bummed cus the trail was really fun but it’ll still be there for future riding.

We arrived at Old Mill Hotel in San Quintin. The hotel is owned by an ex-pat and he has developed a really nice restaurant on-site, they even offer you a free welcome beer – smart! We cleaned up and ended up at our table having drinks before dinner, and dinner got moved up since we were all there – except baby Daniel, he slept through this dinner. I ordered a fish dish which on one hand tasted really amazing but on the other, had some ingredient that was making my lips and mouth tingle and burn in a really weird way. I’ve never experienced that before. Tom said he felt something similar but while he finished his dish I bailed and went to bed early.

I didn’t sort the check that night, good job Drew and Wiles!

Day 7 brings our night ride to Mike's Sky Ranch - stay tuned

Baja day 7: This was a really cool ride day that ended with bad news, but let’s start at the beginning.

Tom, myself, Daniel, and Scott set off to take a track up the mountains that would eventually lead us into Mike’s Sky Ranch, where we’d be staying the night. What I love about Baja is you can turn down an innocuous little dirt street/road and it leads you to a mountain range where you’re riding on top of mountains for hours, with views for days. Pretty cool.

The initial climb to the top of the mountain was fairly challenging with my short legs and tall/heavy bike. The trail was less of a trail and more just rock, dirt, grass. It was clear this was not a path often taken. Once you reached the peak however, it was so worth it. It was almost like a reward for sticking with it. The ride was gorgeous and we were making great time so we decided to stop at Meling Ranch for lunch. We were the only visitors there at the moment and the girls in kitchen said there was basically one choice- shredded beef burritos (or sans carne, for Scott). That along with a beer hit the spot and we decided to take off.

Approximately 4 miles later Tom heard his Delorme ringing. The message was one of the riders crashed and probably broke his foot and shoulder. Also that Wiles was going to Meling Ranch to see if he could find a truck. Shit! Thinking we could intercept/help Wiles we sped back to the Ranch. But Wiles wasn’t there. Then started a send-a-msg/receive-a-msg back n forth on the Delorme to see if we could assist. Everyone involved was busy so we burned about two hours before deciding/confirming we should head to Mike’s Sky Ranch, and the hurt rider was being trucked out.

So off to Mike’s we set, now not with so much daylight left. None of us had ever been so it’s location deep-deep-deep in the mountains was a little surprising. We just kept riding and riding and riding. Look at the map, verify we’re on course, ride, ride, ride. Dusk arrives and we’re still a distance away from the marker on the GPS. We all have headlights – mine is OK, the three guys were pretty dim. The sunset was beautiful though, so I stopped to take a few pictures. The ride in would have been fun in the day but at night it was more of a be careful, don’t die falling over the mountain sort of thing. Finally, off in the distance we saw lights. It was one final steep descent and we arrived.

Where was our group I asked the man who greeted us. He said, “Limon?” (last name of one of our riders) and I said, “yes!” and he shook his head no. Lol. We were a little concerned as CJ and Scott A should’ve been on slab and arrived already. We knew Drew and others were tied up in the rescue efforts. Delorme to the rescue again. I pinged Drew who replied they were headed there. I thought to myself, they can’t possibly be coming this way – doing it ALL in the dark?! Indeed they did, even changing a flat tire in the dark (go Dmitriy!) on the way in. Around 9pm arrived Drew, CJ, Dmitriy, Scott A, Wiles, Andreas. The unlikely crew came together through an assortment of issues: dead battery, want/need to slab, part of my crew crashed, etc.

Dinner was included with the room rate and it was one of, if not the best, dinners in Baja. But then again I’m a red meat kind of girl. Dinner was delicious thick and juicy steak, and rice and even a brownie for dessert! The kitchen was nice enough to prep 6 more plates when I confirmed our group was arriving late. We had some drinks and went to bed, it was a long day.

But not as long as Dmitriy’s – he rode that night all the way back to the truck in Tecate, via dirt, with headlamps guiding his way as his headlight failed at some point :wow Very crazy, though kind, as he wanted to get the hurt rider back to California asap. I don’t endorse his actions! :afm199
