Motorcyclists have brought attention to the "problem"

What problem? That people die?

Not sure what point you were trying to make with those numbers since the OTS report cards I'm reading talk about how dramatically motorcycle fatalities have been dropping the past few years.

Not buying that the stats are worthy of this.

Not to be racist, how many white people died on the road last year.?

Why not a check.point for those folks...?

In the name is safety I consider :bs
If they were adjusting chains and advising o air pressure..check brakes etc.. and issuing advice.. that would be worthy.

True... sometimes we are our own worst enemy...

Bare headed bikers brought us a unwanted helmet law not helmeted riders...

Unmuffled exhaust brought us more unwanted scrutiny not muffled bikes...

Today we have more horse power... more tire... more acceleration... more of
everything... in addition it has also brought us more unwanted regulations
not less... every time I read about the latest gain in performance I naturally
expect more unwanted scrutiny...

Larry your right.. We are.

Sarcasm...I think the OTS should look at funding points for SUVs and pick ups. Not only are their totals higher they likely are major factors in pedestrian deaths.

Those are high enough to mandate training too. Class P if you want to walk in downtown SF.

Look I am joking , but just want to point out that any group can be targeted with statistics.
We are easy targets, because the bulk of society sees no value in our pursuit.

We just saw that 47% of Californians thought lane sharing was illegal. 7% are willing to take physical action to stop us.

Do you really think that 47% gives a hoot if we get to ride? Or are even cared if the moto was outlawed..?

After all to that same % we are crazy or outlaws and not that worthy of a second thought.

Yeah extreme thoughts, but in the name of saving lives the future may hold restrictions that would make your head spin.

So every invasion should be considered seriously, because the last might just be...well the ...

Budman is right on this one: do away with MOCs or extend them to everyone on the road.

If drunks are really your concern (INnohurry) drunk driving checkpoint are sufficient. If safety is your concern, check everyone. Who's more likely to be driving with brakes that are metal on metal? Or drunk? or likely to kill someone?

The difference is in pulling over riders for violations observed by an officer vs. pulling over all motorcycles simply because they're motorcycles.
As noted before, my last ticket was essentially moto-targeted. A CHP plane flying over 128 watching motorcycles piling up behind a car traveling at less than 1/2 the speed limit and failing to let the 5+ vehicles pass. We do a safe DY crossing and are all stopped at the checkpoint. Total BS. It's demonization, persecution, racism, envy, etc. That must go away.

How about ... Sports cars, Cadillacs?
Yeah, those sporty Caddies with brakes made of chewing gum, suspension made of iron hangers and tyres from Barbie's beetle should be banned from the roads. :twofinger

Ain't that a truism.

Agreed, Jerry. I don't mind random checkpoints provided it's for every motorist. There were plenty of those in Geneva. It never bothered me.

Sorry if I'm a little too out in the sticks but... What happens at a moto only checkpoint? Credentials check or more?

They usually get up in your grill about aftermarket parts and typical california stuff, like fining you for not having x number of reflectors in positions a, b, and c, having aftermarket parts that aren't grandfathered, etc. Just ways for them to squeeze money out of you.

They'll try super hard to convince people it's about safety or emissions, but it's really about money the way I figure it. Either way, whoever decided that aftermarket pipes were a serious emissions concern is an idiot. How many motorcycles are out there? How many gas guzzlers are out there which pass smog tests, yet pollute like crazy just from sheer numbers? If it's about emissions then they should ban vehicles that don't get over a certain MPG, it's ridiculous to pick on the minority.

Bondage,

Sorry to bust the bubble, but motorcycles actually pollute more than most cars. Did you watch the Mythbusters episode?

And I think the key complain about aftermark pipes is noise pollution.

Cheers!

You are right, and I know this. However, my argument is for the VOLUME of pollution. How many cars are in California? And how many motorcycles? How many motorcycles does the average person own? I checked a few sites and apparently there are around 16 million cars and 650,000 motorcycles. Twenty-four times more cars than motorcycles. And I don't think 1 in 24 people has a motorcycle, and someone who owns more than one can't ride more than one at a time. Mythbusters did the test, like you said, and found that motorcycles only pollute more than cars only in terms of hydrocarbons, where a 2000s car produces 0.6 g/mi and a 2000s motorcycle 1.3 g/mi. Now that's not even a significant figure in terms of overall pollution. 24 times less bikes than cars, not all driven at once, producing only double of ONE KIND of pollution and is far surpassed by cars in other forms, that's just silly.

In conclusion, it's perfectly logical to make noise complaints about aftermarket pipes, but the emissions argument is stupid. No catalytic converter crap until motorcycles account for more than an immaterial amount of overall pollution in contrast to other vehicles.

We don't know what they "usually" do because there has never been a motorcycle-only checkpoint in California.

It's all speculation triggered by a scare campaign run by AMA and ABATE.

So all you people going "OMFG THE PIGS ARE GONNA GET US WITH THEIR MOTO CHECKPOINTS" be sure to write nice fat checks to AMA and ABATE to make sure it never happens.

And while you're at it, you can PayPal me $100 for your annual alien abduction insurance.
