Sorry but I'm too old for all this conspiracy theory bullshit and fears of a Communist state blah, blah, blah. My life is really pretty simple. If I don't want to get hassled by the Man I don't go breaking laws, then I don't have anything to worry about. The tinfoil hat crowd makes life sooooo complicated sometimes.

nice straw man and deflection. you know that old quote, giving up liberty for safety. well you don't deserve your liberty then son..:thumbdown

I don't see any of those as detention, much less diminishing my rights and freedoms.

Once you give your drivers license to the officer, you are detained. Whether you see this or not is irrelevant.

It's obvious that you don't see your rights and freedoms being diminished.

I have seen so much diminished that I am sensitive to any invasion. Our founding fathers were smart guys who were on there game and passionate about it. I respect greatly what they gave us and letting less than passionate people who do the.political thing for a living rather than for the good of our country and personal freedom will always be suspect.

Every generation accepts where we are at and let more erode. For the good my ass. :flag

You are seized only when you submit to a show of authority. When a person in a uniform holds up his hand and you stop, you are seized, even if they never ask for your license, even if you don't have one.

You are not seized if you gas your turbo Busa and get the hell out of there. :ride

Ray, I also give my DL to the liquor store clerks, to the 555 California security guards, to TSA officers, to United Airlines check-in clerks, to the Pentagon security officers, to the ICE officers, the White House security officers, etc. Am I detained there too?

Our founding fathers were smart guys...
Sure were, but could only make decisions based on facts then and foreseable outcomes. They were not Nostradamus, and even Nostradamus got a lot wrong. The founding fathers never imagines airplanes or skyscrappers, much less a jet airliner crashing into a skyscrapper and killing 2,800 people. So let's get on with the times.

if you're seriously comparing handing your DL to an officer of the law at his request to showing ID to a fucking store clerk, then I'll stick with the "troll" label.
this is ridiculous.

You think they were not that smart to consider outside factors and the technology advances ahead.. I think not.

We of course saw a terrible event with 9-11. And of course the government has done a good job of trying to stop terrorists and been pretty successful at it to this point too.

Are motorcycle only check points a threat to society.. jeez.. give me a f*g break man.:laughing

We are talking peanuts here and your talking the death of thousands and invasion of our countries safety. Stopping and checking for aftermarket pipes is not going to save the US.

What will hit your button or others?? Check points at Greek Restaurants? Check points at Zombi Movies?

Everyone has a hot button where they will say.. F THAT!!!

When the TSA sets up a body check at a barf bash will you finally say enough??

It is the little things that over time become the norm is what will screw my grandkids.. I am all about National Security, but this ain't that brother.

It is exactly that kind of thought that makes the politico go hell yes.. we have them by the balls.. keep on pushing.

Dunno offhand, I just googled for "Is driving a right or a privilege" and copied that list from this which was one of the top results. :)

So I gather that here in California its still true "Having a drivers license is a
privilege, not a constitutional right." but you're still free to move about on foot
just not legally free to operate a motor vehicle...

Reality check.........

There have been no motorcycle only checkpoints occurring in California.

Nobody has proposed motorcycle checkpoints in California.

Carry on ..........

Simple answer?
Can you proceed on your way with out it?
No? You are detained.
Yes? You aren't.

Yes, it's that simple.
FWIW, I don't give any of those you listed my DL. They get my passport card.

Checkpoints? Isn't that what side roads are for?
I don't mind them, as I don't drink, live here legally and keep my shit in order. If stopping for a minute will ruin my whole day, I'll take a detour. Generally I see DUI stops when I come home late at night from work when there is nowhere to be and after having family members hit (in cars and on bikes) by unlicensed, uninsured drunk drivers multiple times, I'm pretty okay with it.

Stopping you and searching your bike/car/person for no reason? Sure, that's bad. But showing the license that you need to be carrying on you while driving in case a cop asks to see it like one is at that moment? Is that such a big deal?

The TSA is wrong because they are searching you without due cause. No one bitched about showing their ID to pick up a boarding pass before 9/11, though.

"Crackdowns" like the one in Santa Rosa are supported by OTS. A local PD gets a few extra bucks from OTS for "motorcycle safety" effort, and they flood the zone with officers looking (mostly) for motorcycle violations. A lot of them have been reported in the past year or so--both in So Cal and Nor Cal. From the Santa Rosa Press Democrat article discussed in another thread:

The cost of the day's extra enforcement is being provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It's basically "free" federal government money that has to be spent.

But I don't think these are anything like the checkpoints in New York. The difference is in pulling over riders for violations observed by an officer vs. pulling over all motorcycles simply because they're motorcycles.

I agree Dan.

They are not the same at all, but still targeting bikes seems unreasonable.

How about SUV's, Hot teens in Sports cars, Cadillacs??? Where are those efforts?

Commercial vehicles I can see.. safety matters hugely.

But Moto's should not be segregated out because.. it just is not right or fair.
