My bike got significantly louder after the first few hundred miles. Thought it was the motor breaking in, now im thinking it was the bolt backing out and that weight flopping around. Could be wrong obviously.

That sounds about right. My bike has never made any more noise from 40 to 1000 miles since I've had it. Definitely an assembly defect.

so i'm almost certain that a bolt backed out of my timing chain gear. pulled a fairing to get a little better view and there seems to be a threaded hole under another bolt but no bolt is to be found. I did find a spring thing that looks like it matches the spring thing attached to another bolt in the timing gear so my money's on that.

quick google last night for '701 engine failure' turned up a thread that said there's actually a recall for some 2018 models for something similar. Husky website is trash tho and is turning up an error so not sure if my bike falls into that recall, but it certainly seems like it needed to if it didn't.

related thread

husky recall URL i keep getting an "error" when i enter my info but maybe you guys will have more luck. Probably worth checking out if you have this bike and it hasn't blown up yet.

Anyways, more pictures.
1st picture shows nothing missing
2nd picture shows threaded hole without bolt
3rd picture shows springy thing in hand and what looks to be matching springy thing on timing gear

Looks like your decompression weight got loose and punched a hole in your valve cover

Junkie

gone for now
Given that it backed out over time and probably made a significant amount of metallic debris before the catastrophic failure, I'd push hard for a new engine.

Welp, buying a husky in south texas ranks up there with a few other genius ideas I've had in my life time. Fill you guys in more tomorrow, been a long day.

TL;DR dropped bike off yesterday, told it'd probably take 3 weeks

Long version
There were three husky dealers in the Houston area, one of which i bought my bike at but is now permanently closed, as i may have mentioned in a previous post. So, two dealers that are still open, only one of which does warranty work. Called them up yesterday since their hours of operation are Tuesday-Sat and let them know what was going on with my bike. Said dealer is also a yamaha and seadoo iirc so they got other stuff going on as well. Speak to the service manager who tells to bring it in but that there are 3 or 4 other motors ahead of mine (1 other 701 for a rering) and 2 or 3 seadoos so it might take a while to get to my bike. "What's a while?" "Honestly, probably a couple months" :nchantr So i ask him what my other dealer options were and he said there's one in waco and a couple in dallas, closest of which is 3.5 hours from me...one way. I thank the service manager for the honest timeline and get off the phone with him.

I call 3 KTM dealers near me thinking they might be able to do warranty work for me since they're pretty much the same thing, all of them tell me husky won't let them since they're not dealers. Blows too cuz there's a bunch of KTM dealers.

So, i call a few more husky places, all a hell of a lot further than I want to drive, got one to tell me that the quickest he could get it done is 2 weeks but it'll probably be about 3. Which puts us into xmas so who knows if that's even an honest timeline. So, i spent about 12 hours in the truck yesterday drive between taking my bike in and going to work just to get a brand new bike warrantied and still probably won't get it back for at least a month is my guess.

Can't say i'm thrilled. 1st world problems i suppose...

oh, and to add to that, every, single, dealer, i called talked about how shitty huskys warranty process is.

"Takes a week to get an approval, then another week to get the parts, puts us at 2 weeks before I can even get started with the repair."

Ya, not sure i'll buy another husky. I'm assuming KTM is similar but at least there's way more dealers around me. Yamaha 450 conversion isn't sounding too bad right now.

Sorry man! That really sucks. 3 weeks seems real optimistic. I paid out of pocket to have some motor work done on a previous husky and it took about 3 months.

Sometimes I wish I would have done a conversion. I like my 701 and all but something lighter would be nice.

When I had the top end blow on my 701 it was a nightmare to get Husky to step up. I finally had to play hard ball after 3 months of bullshit.

- I had to tell them multiple times that my bike was one of the press bikes that was beat to shit by their euro press team in a visit to LA. Apparently several left with broken bones and injuries after hooning on the 701's. They had an internal communication that said something to the effect of "if one of these bikes comes in for mechanical failure, prioritize it... they were beat to shit and then sold as "new".

- I threatened to use my position as a track day employee and r/motorcycles moderator to inform 500k+ riders about the woes of my situation and the AWFUL warranty process and dealer support of Husky/KTM (Scott at Berkeley Yamaha/Huskie was VERY helpful though)... It a blown head gasket that was forcing coolant out of the overflow reservoir. They tried to sell it as coolant cap issues, hose issues, and seveal other problems that never would've resulted in the problems I had.

- When they tried to call my "bluff" I posted this video to r/supermoto with a title of "Why I'll never buy another KTM/Husqvarna again"

They finally relented and replaced the top end. :x

The fact that i called husky on monday at 9am JUST to inquire if my bike had any known recalls, and i still haven't gotten a call back, speaks volumes.

Those press bikes used in LA were all 2017 bikes. Yours is a 2016.

No, it was the ORIGINAL press bikes. From 2015/2016. Mine might even be the one that Sean MacDonald rode in his review

It was the last '16 701 available in CA when i got it in Sep of '16

This info was from Scott at Berkley via his Husky rep

It's not my fault...
After next month, I'll be in the deep waters with no warranty. 7,300 miles with no issues (knock on wood). Ya'll are making me nervous with all your blown top ends.

I would not worry. You have one reported head gasket issue, and a strange auto decomp bolt coming off. Not to say these are not legitimate issues. I read the whole 1,200 page thread on ADV rider regarding the 701, and issues like this were far and few.

Remember, the newer motor has been on the Duke since '14 and it's been solid.

I would not hesitate to buy again. Matter of fact, I ordered a 2019 KTM 690 SMC-R to replace my 2018 701. I can't wait!
