2019 KTM 690 SMC R Supermoto coming to US

Is it weird that I want to lower this, add some streetbike handlebars, and put a 125cc road racing full fairing on it?

Nope. Super singles were pretty popular about 10 years ago. I bet converting the SMCR to a super single bike would be pretty amazing.

given that this has a linkage, I wonder how different it is vs the 701

Forks are different. 701 has a rear linkage suspension too.

also, the electronics package is completely different. 701 lacks ride modes, MSR, quickshift, cornering ABS, and traction control.

After owning a bike with Bosch's latest traction control - i'm sold on it. It's pretty amazing and completely unobtrusive.

I know the 701 has a linkage, Huskys tend to, KTMs tend not to, and that's one of the main differences (on the dirtbikes, 350/351, 500/501)

yeah the dirt KTM/Husky versions are different enough, but the 701 enduro/SM is really all KTM. I guess it was KTM's way of putting the new 690 motor out earlier. the older 690 frames would not have supported the new motor without significant re-tooling.

I am excited. I have always wanted the SMC-R version they offered in Europe but not here. My 690 SMC was great when working, I am sure this thing will kick ass on the backroads. I might wait a year or so until they get the US specs sorted out. I have already been bitten hard by the 1st wave of 690 SMC with so called rocker arm issues that KTM swears is not their fault.

The motor in the 2019 bike with revised head design has been out in the US (2016+ Duke) (2017+ 701) for 3 years now.

My 701 is a solid beast and super smooth for a single. At 80mph is when I shift to 6th. Less overall vibes than my old 990 adventure.

As you know, I've owned built several 690 smcs and am very familiar with the bike. The new motor feels nothing like the old.

I am finally getting to rebuilding my SMC. Where would you recommend getting parts on line? Rocker arms, Cam Shaft timing chain and lastly which Gasket Kit do you recommend?

It's not my fault...
If this is priced the same as the 701 then it will be a winner. Dash still looks simplistic as the 701. Id like a tach guage.

Oh man... I was going to get the 701 but I think I'm going to have to settle for this... or the 2019 950 Hypermotard... these damn choices
