Your SHTF arsenal, reasoning

I have 4 firearms Im taking with me when it all crumbles.

Glock 19 w extended mags for personal defense
Savage Model 24 - 30-30 over 20g for upland game and small game harvest
Ithica Model 37 sawed off 12g Featherlite for zombie harvest
Ruger .308 w Bushnel 24x for large game

I know lots of guys/gals go for military AR rifles but thats too much attention I dont want.

All my rifles and ammo are packable on the wee-strom.

Whats in your bugout arsenal?

Ruger 10/22 Backpacker with Magpul Backpacker Stock + Bushnell TR-25 - easy to carry thousands of rounds, highly packable and versatile. Can be used to hunt small game and in self defense.

Remington 870 12ga - high availability of parts, lots of ammo options for hunting all sortsa game and self defense.

AR-15 - don't quite care about getting attention with my civilian firearm. If you're seeing it, we've likely got other issues in a SHTF scenario. Overall, probably the most effective and versatile self defense weapon in my quiver.

G19/G17 - My 19 has an RMR on it and would be my go to on person firearm for concealability, reliability, familiarity and availability of parts.

The lady has shot the 17 a bunch and is familiar with it. Good firearm for her.

KelTek KSG-25 4-barrel shottie, anyone? Bueller?

MSRP $1,400, currently available for $770.

Not legal in the unfree state of Kalifornia. :cry

I'd be very tempted to pack out my M1 Carbine. Three thirty-round mags of .30 cal gives me 90 rounds plus a few 10-rd mags. 300-yard reach, shoots like a pop-gun, looks like a toy. Stealthy as hell, in other words.

I'd leave my AR-10 in the safe, too heavy and uncomfortable to shoot.

Like I'd tell you anything. :x :teeth

I'm surprised you wouldn't go with this: https://www.ruger.com/products/pcCarbine/models.html due to packability and ammo interchangeability.

Two shotties? I'd not waste my thought processes on zombies, TBH.

I really like that PC Carbine but it hasnt been very reliable with the glock mags:/

10/22’s are great for small game but just not a good round for all around hunting or personal defense unless you put a lot of rounds down range.

the savage is purely a small to mid size game harvester. It breaks down and stores easy. I like being able to shoot chuckers, pheasant, squirrel, or deer with one rifle.

The Ithica is a 60’s M37 w slam fire feature. 7 slugs. I use it as protection in the bush. It will stop a bear dead in its tracks, weighs less than 5lbs and is the most capable round in that weight category next to a .44 mag. or a DE.

I chose my arsenal for living and surviving in the wildreness as opposed to urban environment. AR would be better utilized there. It has a distinct presence.

Probably will get flamed for sounding like some teen COD player but AR57 and Five seveN. Both are light, easy to conceal & use same ammo. The ammo itself is super light and easy to carry 1000s of rounds on your person. 50 round mags for AR, 30 & 20 round mags for the pistol.

Mine would include a couple of crates of Mosins and a few dozen (hundred?) crates of 7.62x54r 440rd tins, all left sealed and preserved.

Hard assets gain value in time of need, and being able to arm everyone capable is useful.

Vision limits me from the long range stuff, but I wanted some range over a shotgun. I settled for a Marlin guide gun 45/70, model 61 in 22, hand guns in 45 long, 45Auto, 22, 357.

I don't really have a bug out plan as if the SHTF I would stay home. I have readily available water and food. But seeing as I am outside California I have a ton of options in the closet. If I had to leave here is what I would take.

M&P 9mm with a suppressor in case I need to be quiet.
SBR AR-15 with suppressor easy to find ammo (need to get 22lr conversion for it)

Other than that I am not sure what else I would need.

At least I didn't post pics of said goodies.

I could also have my neighbor join my SHTF caravan so that if we need to go loud or stop a tank we can break out his .50 BMG. That thing is loud as hell. A normal gunshot in my house is a muted pop when that thing goes off it sounds like a firecracker in the same room.

Damn, I don't have a donkey. Enlist neighbours? I need to study Wehrmacht manuals re: using horses. .... but that didn't work out well.

That's one of the reasons I own a 4x4 pickup and trailer... ;)

Yup.

I don't see how anyone can "properly" "prepare" for SHTF in an urban environment. And by urban, I don't just mean big cities, but even lower density suburbs. You pretty much need a redoubt in Idaho or something.

And I don't.

I pretty much limit my stuff to the shelter in place "big quake" scenario. Beyond that, just have to wing it.

And if you live in Western Oregon/Washington, if you aren't prepped for in place of 60+ days, you will be in big trouble in that quake scenario. Big. Trouble.

The Mess Potential of a big quake up there is off the charts compared to us down here in CA.

Sooooooooooooo many compromises.

I grew up with a grandfather with a dairy farm who had several water tanks on his property. His emergency water supply was huge. I have a 3 car garage and yet only seem to manage to store about 200gal of emergency water, which is nothing in comparison and will deplete in about a week, maybe two with rationing or four with strict rationing.

Same for foods, I have maybe a month's worth of emergency food rations in addition to what's in the cupboards. Same grandfather had a root cellar with literally years worth of stored food for the entire family, and not just freeze dried meals.

Back during Y2K a lot of folks laughed at the families who bought/built compounds out in BFE TX/NM/AZ/UT/etc. I was more envious than laughing, and still am, if for no reason other than to have somewhere to go hunting anytime I want. :)

Yea, we're getting a house that has one of those tankless water heaters, so I wanted to look in to some sort of water storage solution for it. In my current house, I upgraded the 40g to a 50g water heater notably as a water storage alternate.

Obviously it's much easier to do the kinds of things your grandfather did in a rural setting. Locally, it's not the supply issue so much per se, but, simply, the security issue. All of the ammo in the world can't do much against a determined group willing to burn you out. It can test their determination, at best. But no doubt they'll be bringing along folks and equipment that can test yours.

Seems mostly untenable to me.

So here are my thoughts based on my situation.

I am in a rural-ish area. I have a 2-acre pond in my yard for backup water. I have filtration methods in place for it. It is also fully stocked with bass, catfish and bluegill. I am about half a mile from a full-fledged bayou which is water and food. I have tons of family close by as well just in case like 3 cousins within a half mile direct of my house.

I have a two story house on a 7-foot high hill with sightlines at a minimum of 300 yards in all directions. I have multiple guns/calibers from reach out and touch you to close quarter combat. I can be loud or quiet as the scenario demands and also have a bit of ammo stocked up for just in case but mostly from when ammo was scarce don't want to go through that again.

I don't actively plan for SHTF but for me that would most likely be a hurricane and I think I am ready for it. I have a couple of generators but gas would be the limiting factor for that until I can get my tractor PTO generator back up and running and then I can store a ton of off-road diesel for cheap.

For 90% of SHTF situations I can think of (storm, earthquake, etc) there will probably be some law enforcement and an expectation of things returning to normal. I would carry a Glock 23, Sig 9mm or Shield. Main reason is they are all on my CCW and I could legally carry them in a disaster situation.

I know, not as fun to think about as zombies and a SCAR.

If it was ever zombies I am hoping for walking dead style and not the crazy fast World War Z ones those will mess you up or even the whatever they were from I am Legend that got smarter as time went on fuck that kind of apocalypse. I want the slow-moving sitting ducks all day every day and twice on Sunday and I can practice my COD headshots.
