What did you do to your dirty bike today?

I doubt it could be louder than the one it's replacing.

Now that I'm looking at my notes, I had written down that I needed a Q4, not the PowerCore 4. Oops! If it's too loud, I'll get a quiet insert for it.

I ran a Powercore 4 on my XR4 for a few years. I loved the power but it was just too loud. They are really really really loud. Like ear plugs all the time loud! I moved to a Q4, and never looked back.

If you have not run it you may be able to return it or sell as mounted but new.

Okay, I've put a few miles on the bike with the new PowerCore 4 pipe. It's actually a tiny bit quieter (i.e., less loud) than what was on there before. It's not bad with gentle throttle, but when I open it up, with the higher compression piston in there, it definitely has a bark to it. But not more than the White Bros pipe that's been on there for more than ten years.

I may buy a quiet insert for it, but not right away.

I dropped it last weekend at Hollister. While it does not look like it the wood was wet and super slippery. As soon as the bike went vertical all forward progress stopped and actually reversed course.:laughing

Moar hero dirt riding. Hit 100 hours since the last rebuild; I didn't even change the plug (BR8EIX) since then.

Sold it!

What did I do to my dirty bike today? Sold it. Now I only have two in the garage. This one has never been all that dirty since I've owned it and is currently quite a bit cleaner than the other two, especially the other XR.

The new owner will be hauling it back to Northern Idaho today.

I put Rox bar risers on both bikes so that I can ride standing up without hunching over. I'll have to avoid going full lock to the right on the KTM or I'll eventually get a kink in the clutch cable. Not hard to avoid doing that. I had to bend the aluminum Cycra hand guards a bit to get it all to fit on my XR650L. A vice, a big hammer and a big wrench took care of that task.

Oh, and I set off a neighbor's car alarm with my new PowerCore 4 exhaust. Man, that Jeep Cherokee was honking for a long time. :laughing

Fresh Shinko R505 Cheater

IMG_20200330_152643164_HDR-L.jpg

Shinko 546F with 100h. It was suggested OaklandF4i might want to pick up this take-off and continue to use it. Replaced with Shinko 216MX.

New closeout rear sprocket and hardware. Old hardware was loose!

New gearing will be 14/51, from 13/50, from stock 14/50. The Primary Drive X-ring chain seems quality but its master link clip fit is lame. My old (Regina) chain's master link clip disappeared on the last ride.

:laughing :twofinger I've got a Shinko 546 and 505 ready to mount up. I've always been a Dunlop AT or Maxxis IT kinda guy, will see how I adapt to these Shinko cheaters..... Yeh, I'm a couple years behind you guys.

Top end looks pretty good for 100 hours, you have it dialed in. :thumbup

What piston have you been using and how many hours on the cylinder and crank?

I need to pull my top end apart as its at 125 hours. I checked at 100 hours and the compression still hadn't dropped significantly since fresh when it was 185 psi.

You will love the 505 Cheater, it is good to fantastic, depending. The 546 is decent to good.

What piston have you been using
Wiseco. This is the first one with the coating and the first one I went all 100h without inspecting the rings. The previous Wiseco was uncoated, went 100h, but I think I changed the rings at 50h.

how many hours on the cylinder and crank?
Only 200 since I got a meter, I had to guess at the 50 before that.

My bike is fully assembled with the original piston (!?) and new rings as a temporary measure. I'm going to go start it soon and go for a break in ride.

Its going to be awhile before I get to try them out as everything is closed. But looking forward to seeing what everyone is raving about.

I'm running the same piston. Will be tearing down some time very soon with all this quarantine time. May finish up the spare motor with the wide ratio tranny first.

Been trying to be real anal about filters to see if I can't get three top ends out of a cylinder (300+ hrs), will see. Was hoping for at least that or more from the current crank. At my pace, I think its more than reasonable to shoot for.

Bummer about the master clip. I've been running the same chain exclusively on all my bikes for 6-7 years. I've only destroyed one when I waited too long to give it some love after Baja and the salt did a number on it. Other wise I can get darn near 3k miles of use on them in the desert. On the YZ, I bet a couple hundred hours. I use their steel sprockets too. Heavy, but cheap and wear for ever.

Enjoy the break in ride! :thumbup

Even though I have a real nice house to live in, I gotta get out once in a while. Went down to the Snake River again, way south of where I live. Wanted to see if it was any easier on an XR650L than on a 790R.

I went down the easier route, but came back out on the more difficult one. Still managed to get stuck once and kill the engine in the super rocky section. Didn't let the bike fall over, though and was able to continue on once I picked a better line. You have to stay about five moves ahead working your way through big uphill rocks and if you get behind you can end up trying to go over a big rock instead of around it.

This is the dirt road that gets you to the easier route down to the river.

There are farms down there, on the other side of the river.

Apparently roads to the farm houses too.

NICE! Looks even better wet. Are those the forks I gave you? Stock they were aluminum and chrome regulars; the black looks great with the street tires. Better just walk in to the local PoPo and hand them your license and get it over with : )
