The most challenging motorcycle roads?

Forks is always a worthy mention. That road is just scary because of the epic cliff. But totally worth it for Callahan road that follows.

One I haven't seen mentioned is shelter cove road. It is challenging for a few reasons.

1. Fog/wet often
2. Steep and then more steep
3. Insane locals

I rode it solo in pouring rain. That stuck with me.

Oh yea, agree. Followed a guy down that road who knew it well, me on my drz and him on a wr450. We both had knobbies but he railed that road.

My shitty old motorhome did not like it too much, could smell the brakes.

Fish and chips at the place on the bottom made it worth the trip.

Highway 70 is supposed to be really nice, have smooth canyons, and minimal traffic. Problem is the tons of slabbing it takes to get there/back from the Bay Area.

:confused I thought the thread title said "challenging roads." :confused It's a pretty road. It's a scenic road, but the most challenging thing about it is avoiding a performance award from the local CHP.

I was already twitching a little bit about the inclusion of Titlow Road, which is fun, narrow, and remote, though I'm not sure I'd call it challenging. But 70 through the Feather River Canyon, I'm pretty sure about.

There have been Two Extremely Challenging experiences.

1. Was OMG strong and gusty Wind. In Utah, coming West out of Ogden, crossing the salt flats, just before getting to Wendover...I was the only one on the road (and on my motorcycle) every other vehicle was parked.

Between strong gusts, I could get "up wind side",on the road...
Then during the gust, which knocked me down flat, and pushed me across two lanes...
I would come to just a few inches of being completely slid off the road.

2. was on the crest of Ebbetts pass (Hwy 4) under a storm cell that was dropping so much water, everything just turned dark grey...
Road, Rock wall embankment, Drop off on the other side, Trees... Everything looked the same dark grey... Only saving grace was the rapid fire lightning strikes giving the flash's that reflected off the smooth/flat surface of the road, and making that stand out, a bit.

Any Irish road in the winter, Take your pick, Muck and shit, farm machinery, trucks, rain and more rain and rain on the rain, Then frost overnight, Try riding on that...
Did it for years, Bike was transport...

Ask me about my B-1-D
I nominate Salmon river road, from Cecilville to Forks of Salmon to highway 96

1 lane wide,
2 way traffic,
goaty twisties,
no guard rail at all,
anywhere from 30 to 300 ft above the salmon river,
cut into the edge of a cliff,
and several spots where it looks to be one good winter storm from disappearing entirely.

I love it!

Not my kind of challenge. Cliff's.. one way... no real pace to be had. Did it once. Never again really.

To me challenging needs to include some fun.

Glad you love it though Simon!

No. Just. No.

But but... :laughing

late braking
I was challenged by a pick up in the opposite direction on Sawyers Bar last Saturday. Blind turn on a cliff section.
Thank you, ABS!
and yes, I'll do that road again. reverse direction next time

I have also been challenged by a pickup there. White Nissan?

Thing was, I was doing like 35 mph on my side of the road when he tried to run me off! :rolleyes
