Well the British American Cup went off without any issues. Sid and I had to mark the last bit of section perimeter and loop on Friday then came the riders. We knew there was going to be a strong turn out as the weather was good and it was part of the "Best of the West" series but we weren't expecting that kind of crowd. 95 riders on Saturday, 87 on Sunday; Saturday was the biggest attendance in 30 years according to one of the main club members.
We had a couple of Top riders at the event riding for Vertigo; Dustin and Dalton Land. Dustin was a pro for a number of years and is now coaching his sun Dalton, Dalton is starting his first year as a pro this year. We got a slew of positive comments about our gate trial and the layout from a wide range of folks, upper level and lower level riders. It was a complete success so all the work that Sid, Francesca and I did paid off; not only did we accommodate 95 riders without too long lines but people had fun in the sections too.
Sunday was also fun, Adrian set the sections tight and it was dry so most of the trick was finding traction in the soft stuff and trying not to make stupid mistakes. After Saturday I was pretty spent so rode poor on Sunday, still had fun but my scores were double some of the other ADV folk....yikes! Little bit of rain hit us mid-day but just enough to get the punch cards wet, not enough to effect the dirt. Had one of the upper level riders come backward off an 8 ft cliff above a stream and flat land on his feet, immediately he was down on the ground in pain. Had to get air lifted out with a possible compression fracture in his lower back, never seen any injury near that severe in all the time I've been riding events and it put a somber tone on Sunday afternoon. He had feeling in his toes and made it to the airflight went well, we're all hoping he can recover fully as he is only 17.
As a wild side note: I was setting one of the last loop markers Friday down near where a stream cuts through the area. On one side the stream cut is about 1 foot but on the other there is about a 12-16ft vertical wall. People camp and ride on the high wall side and they had set up a small kids section near the edge (10 ft at the closest point). Some guys was riding the kids section and I hear a throttle rev out and look up just in time to see this guy launching off the 12 ft cliff and coming off the back of the bike like a starfish. Guy drops partially on his back into the creek and weeds below with the bike revving full bore in the muck. I run over to see if he's OK thinking this could be really bad but the guy gets up. I kill the bike as I ask him if he's OK and as he's slowly realizing what just happened he also realizes he's fine. Not even a bruise (aside from his ego), couldn't believe it. One ill placed rock in that stream and he would've been the other air lift out of there this weekend, man did he get lucky...
Next event it Prairie city in a couple of weeks, I'll likely check that one as I usually do, then off to Rocky Ridge in late March. That's always a fun one and the camping is good.
